What I would Have Like to Have Seen?

Scott Edelman recently wrote about the great moments

in the history of SF that he would have like to have seen at SF

Weekly (www.scifi.com/sfw/column/sfw17733.html).

Originally I was going to repost it but then I realized something.

I love reading about the history of the genre. I just love history

either real or imaginary just like J.R.R Tolkien did. So below are

few moments I would have liked to have seen:

BayCon, the 1968 World Science Fiction

Convention. This is said to be one of the most

chaotic Worldcons of all time. Things that I heard

about: Philip Jose Farmer’s never ending guest of

honor speech, Harlan Ellison hawking manuscripts

at the Hugo ceremony, and people passing out at

the Masquerade dance.

The San Diego Comic Con where Jerry Siegel and

Joe Shuster appeared after the reinstatement of

their creator credit of Superman. After years of

living in near poverty, these men finally got the

respect that they deserved. This was described in

Gerard Jones’ Men of Tomorrow: Geeks,

Gangsters and the Birth of the Comic Book .

The 1973 James Forrestal Memorial Lecture at the

Unite States Naval Academy. The speaker was

Robert A. Heinlein. Heinlein addressed the brigade

of midshipmen. This speech was reprinted in

Expanded Universe.

Seeing Gene Roddenberry plugging his new show

Star Trek at Tricon, the 1966 Worldcon. This

included a presentation of the pilots and display of

costumes at the convention fashion show.

The meeting where Julius Schwartz explained to

writer John Broome and artist Gil Kane his idea for

the revamp of the Green Lantern in 1959.

Iguanacon II, the 1978 Worldcon. I want to see the

trailer Harlan Ellison lived in for the convention.

Ellison did this because Arizona (the convention

was Phoenix) did not ratify the ERA and he did

wish to support any state that did not.
