PENNELL, Jr. Editor [email protected] ADVERTISING [email protected] Construction will begin soon on the Bethlehem sewer project. Alexander County officials and Shabeldeen Engineering will meet with representa- tives from Two Brothers Utilities, Inc. and the North Carolina Division of Water Infrastructure on Monday, March 16 for a precon- struction meeting. At their December 16, 2019 meeting, the Alexander County Board of Commissioners awarded a bid for the sewer project to Two Brothers Utilities, Inc. of Shelby. The bid totaled $5,149,557.63. Dan Shabeldeen, owner of Shabeldeen Engineering, noted that the company has done projects for the City of Hickory and comes highly recommended. Commissioners did not approve an alternate bid totaling $973,881.93 for a pump station at Bowman Court and an associated force main to Chigger Ridge Road, as a potential housing development on Bowman Court has stalled. “Bethlehem is going to be a high-growth area, especially with Hwy. 127 becoming a four-lane road,” said Commissioner Ryan Mayberry. “There will be a lot of new commer- cial and residential devel- opment in the community, and this sewer project is essential to accommodate this growth.” The Bethlehem sewer project includes 23,415 linear feet of sewer lines and the upgrade of the Heritage Village and Wittenburg Springs pump stations, and is designed for future development in Bethlehem. Once underway, the sewer project is expected to be completed in approxi- mately 500 days. Commissioner Marty Pennell said he wants to ensure that the public understands this project isn’t designed to provide sewer service for neigh- borhoods, but does pro- vide the infrastructure for future service. County Manager Rick French agreed, “I know that a lot of people want to tap on to the sewer sys- tem, but right now we’re trying to get the backbone in place. It’s time to move forward with this project because we’ve been dis- cussing this for a long time.” “At some point in time, we’re going to have to start running sewer lines into neighborhoods because quite a few people are hav- ing septic issues,” said Commissioner Mayberry. Bethlehem sewer project construction to begin soon The Alexander County Board of Education approved the 2020-21 school year calendar at the regular scheduled meeting on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at Central Office. All board members were present. A moment of silence was held as the meeting started. The proposed Alexander County Schools 2020-2021 calendar was pre- sented by Jessica Anderson, Director of Accountability. The calendar has a start date of August 17, 2020, for students. (Class began this current school year on August 26, 2019.) The first required workday for teachers and staff is August 11, 2020. The early start is due to the alignment of the calen- dar to neighboring districts in a grant partnership with Alexander County Schools. With the early start, the first semester will end before Christmas break allowing testing to take place before the holiday. With the early start date the last day of classes for students will be May 28, 2021. The board recognized two high school students selected to attend the 2020 session of North Carolina Governor’s School. Hayleigh Marshall, a student at Alexander Early College, will attend Governor’s School East for English. Caroline Wills, a student at Alexander Central High School, will attend Governor’s School West for English. The Governor’s School of North Carolina is a five and one-half week summer residential program for intel- lectually gifted high school students, integrating academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses on each of two campuses. The curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline, and does not involve credit, tests, or grades.
