In each President’s Report, we pause to reflect upon the year that ended so that we

may consider our accomplishments and acknowledge our blessings. Moments of

thoughtful reflection are very hard to find in these busy days, but they are exceedingly

important. Just as important is the promise we’ve made to our students, alumni and

other constituents that provides the foundation for the work we do. “The Promise

of a Limitless Future” is more than just our tagline. It is our guiding principal and

is reflected in our contemplation, work and aspirations for all of our students. We

cannot thank our benefactors enough for helping us to realize the promise.

With the help of our Board of Trustees, our alumni and friends of the University,

we have made significant campus improvements. We understand that the “look”

of the campus is reflective of our pride and belief in it. In order to help assure the

future, we are focusing intently on sound financial management. But that is not

enough. As a small, private HBCU we do not enjoy the huge endowment incomes

to which some other institutions are privy. Over 95 percent of our students are

dependent on financial aid in order to pursue their education. We do not have a long

tradition of committed alumni giving. But we are creating that tradition now.

We are changing the way we think and act regarding the practice of philanthropy.

We are focusing our efforts on funding scholarships, and building an endowment

that will sustain the legacy of Virginia Union. We are reaching out to our alumni,

friends, foundations, corporations and the faith community so that they reach not

only into their hearts when they think about VUU, but also into their pockets.

Virginia Union is adapting. We are showing our flexibility in being able to

change with these changing times. We are becoming more transparent, knowing

that we must avail ourselves to our community if we want the community to

be responsive to us. We will grow in excellence, reach and influence through

the various endeavors we have embraced in our strategic priorities.

It is felt by the Board of Trustees, the administration, faculty and staff, and

supporters that we now have a rare and excellent opportunity at this moment in

time to move Virginia Union University forward. The positive campus environment

and level of alumni and community support have created a window of opportunity

that is unparalleled. Together, we can make important things happen for the

benefit of our students, the community and country- we are relatively small but we

stand tall with a large footprint in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the nation.

Virginia Union University – A Year In Review.

August 2010VUU welcomed 516 freshmen to the campus –

284 young ladies, 232 young men.

September 2010Dr. Claude Grandford Perkins became the 12th President of

Virginia Union University at an installation ceremony which

was the culmination of a week-long celebration. Perkins

said in his inaugural address, “My life has been devoted

to helping young people find their place in this world…”

October 2010Homecoming 2010 drew thousands of alumni and friends of

the University to the campus! From the parade to the step

show to the football game, a good time was had by all!

November 2010Virginia Union University hosted Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf,

President of Liberia on November 7, 2010 at a celebration

of worship, in Coburn Hall. Johnson-Sirleaf is the first

woman to be elected President of any African country. At the

worship service, she was introduced to VUU’s oldest alumnus,

Mr. Wesley T. Carter, ’29, who descends from Liberia.

December 2010The Kappa Eta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society

was re-established. Alpha Kappa Mu is a general scholarship

honor society open to junior and senior men and women in

all academic areas. Twenty-four students were inducted.

The University Choir held its annual Winter Concert

with a capacity crowd in attendance in Coburn Hall.


April 2011Dominion Resources, one of VUU’s major donors, completed

a $1 million gift to the University for student scholarships.

The Dominion Educational Partnership selected VUU

to receive $40,000 for its innovative and promising

collaboration between the Sydney Lewis School of Business

and the Office of Career Services. The collaborative

goal between the two areas was to expose students to

extracurricular experiences and shared opportunities

through the Six Sigma Credentialing and Enhancement

Program. Out of that program students were given internships

with Dominion and two received full-time job offers.

March 2011Major renovations were undertaken on the VUU campus-

12 classrooms were transformed into “smart classrooms”

(a classroom that has an instructor station equipped with

computer and audiovisual equipment); the residence

halls received “facelifts”, which included the installation

of new floor tiles, painting and new furniture; repairs and

upgrades were made to the heating, ventilation and air

conditioning system in Ellison Hall; the Belgian Building

was completely transformed into usable space for the Fine

Arts department; extensive repairs were done to the Baptist

Memorial Building; the perimeter fence surrounding the

campus was extended to Wilder Library; and the President’s

house received landscaping upgrades, the completion of a

backyard perimeter privacy fence and the installation of sod.

February 2011Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson ’79, was installed as Chairman of

the Virginia Union University Board of Trustees. He replaces

Dr. Frank S. Royal ’61, who had served as Chairman for

30years. Said Dr. Richardson, “Virginia Union’s future is

bright. We have an excellent history, extremely competent

faculty, an extremely dedicated Board of Trustees, a visionary,

dynamic President and a blossoming student body…”January 2011The Zeta Chapter of Beta Kappa Chi National Scientific

Honor Society, which encourages and advances

scientific education through original investigation,

the dissemination of scientific knowledge, and the

stimulation of high scholarship in pure and applied

science was re-activated. Nine students were inducted.

May 2011The class of 1961 celebrated their 50 year “Golden Class”

reunion at the 2011 Commencement Exercises. The class

had raised (at time of printing) $83,112 to commemorate

their 50th anniversary.

May 2011David Mims was signed by the National Football Leagues’

Kansas City Chiefs. Mims is the first Virginia Union

football player to sign with an NFL team since 2004.

February 2011Amidst all the excitement of the CIAA Tournament, Dr.

Claude G. Perkins hosted Virginia Union’s first annual

CIAA President’s Brunch. The Brunch was instituted to

give alumni chapters in attendance at the tournament, the

opportunity to mingle with each other and the President at

a University-sponsored event. Music was provided by the

University’s jazz ensemble and the chapters in attendance

donated $12,000 in support of their alma mater.

April 2011Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson hosted the first Pastors

Summit on the campus. The summit was an initial step

in bringing together pastors to talk about what Virginia

Union can do to help them and what they and their

congregations can in turn do to help Virginia Union.

June 2011Through a $200,000 grant from Mead Westvaco, the

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)

Initiative operated during June and July 2011, bringing

13 incoming freshman, with plans to major in a STEM

field, to the campus for a four week program. The

students received financial support and were immersed

in a curriculum focusing on the math and science areas

(specifically calculus, biology and chemistry). Mead

Westvaco’s goal in funding this program is to address the

under representation of minorities in the STEM disciplines.

June 2011The Fine Arts degree program was re-established with

the introduction of 3 majors- Theatre, Music, and Visual

Arts. The program is housed in the newly re-designed

Belgian Building with studio space, a green room,

theatre, classroom and office space for instructors.
