Greetings Friends, When I look back on 2016, truly it can be said that the Lord is good! God has been good to Dorcas Ministries, allowing us to partner with you to serve over 20,000 men, women and children in our community: people from all walks of life who fell on hard times and needed our help. Together we were able to feed the hungry, cloth the naked, provide shelter, and train people for better lives. Simply put, your donations helped ease suffering. Your donations stopped evictions. Your donations put food in the stomachs of the hungry. That is tremendous! Thank you for your partnership.

We celebrate and rejoice in what we were able to do, by God’s grace, for needy people in our community:

• In 2016 we distributed over $975,000 in financial and food assistance to those who came to us in time of need.

• By constantly reviewing and enhancing our aims, we are now spending nearly as many dollars on self-sufficiency for our clients as we are on crisis assistance.

• Our tireless team of over 450 volunteers logged over 79,000 hours of donated time and talent to carry out our mission.

• Dorcas Ministries added a client representative to our Board of Directors along with other community members.

• On September 23, 2016, Dorcas Plaza received a Certificate of Occupancy for a primary health care clinic, a result of a public/private partnership between Advance Community Health, Dorcas Ministries, the Town of Cary, and Wake County.

• Thanks to the quality and volume of material donations from the public and the dedicated work of our volunteers and staff, the Dorcas Thrift Shop sales continue to set new records.

• “Without a vision the people perish.” In October 2016, with the impetus of the Town of Cary, the guidance of Ratio Design and with input from internal and external stakeholders, we completed a Master Plan of our facilities. The Plan accompanies and supplements our Strategic Plan by maximizing our ability to serve.

• We are in the process of purchasing an outparcel of land in front of our property to allow for implementation of the first phase the Master Plan.

• We were recognized as the Best Charity and the Best Resale Shop in Western Wake County by the readers of The Cary Magazine.

OVER 20,000 LIVES TOUCHED

336 neighbors facing homelessness received financial assistance with emergency housing and/or counseling to help them overcome homelessness.

172 neighbors learned how to manage their chronic diseases by meeting with nurses at the bimonthly UNC mobile clinic.

66 neighbors were helped with the cost of retraining so they could pursue work that would boost their ability to be stable and self-sufficient.

with over $975,000 in assistance.

930 neighbors received help with the cost of a valuable preschool or daycare experience for their children.

7,000 neighbors fed their families from a generous supply of healthy groceries while they were working to get back on their feet.

1,577 neighbors attended training classes or met with job readiness coaches that improved their employability and ability to be self-sufficient.

11,000 neighbors received financial help with necessary bills when they were experiencing a crisis such as a job loss, major medical expense, divorce or separation.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

There is a lot of good news in this year’s report; for this the Dorcas Ministries’ Board and staff are grateful for the support of a caring community of volunteers, donors, and local governments. While this report is appropriately a look back at 2016, I would like to share good news about what lies ahead for Dorcas Ministries through our Master Plan and preparation for our 50th anniversary in 2018. The Dorcas Ministries’ Master Plan is the culmination of a deliberate process completed last year to evaluate the existing physical conditions and layout of Dorcas Plaza. The process used feedback from volunteers, staff, the Board, the Town of Cary, and community partners to create a plan to address

operational efficiencies and future site development to benefit Dorcas Ministries and the community. The Plan addresses both short term (1– 5 years) and long term (10 –15 years) needs to improve space utilization, expand outreach services, and enhance our goal of becoming a

“one stop shop” for social and health services in western Wake County. The Dorcas Ministries’ Master Plan moves into the implementation phase in 2017 and you will begin to see changes to our physical space to improve efficiency, ergonomics, and to grow sales. In early 2017, we will close on the purchase of the lot at the entrance of Dorcas Plaza. This year we also anticipate making improvements to our building and parking lot for our tenants and customers. Why are we taking all of this on at a time when everything seems to be going so well? The answer is simple – we have been given and entrusted with much and, as a result, much is demanded of us. The growth and expansion of our outreach services will continue for the foreseeable future and we must seek the financial resources to meet that demand. The Dorcas Ministries’ Master Plan, while dealing with physical conditions and brick and mortar structures, is really about delivering on our mission of providing crisis relief to neighbors seeking stability and self-sufficiency. Our ability to address the growing needs in our community is good news and a testament to all who support Dorcas Ministries. Dorcas Ministries will turn 50 years old in 2018. In 1968, Dorcas Ministries was founded by a group of Cary churches to provide services to neighbors in need. Here we are almost 49 years later, and while we have evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of our community, our mission remains unchanged. As we look to celebrate and honor our 50th year of doing God’s work, we have an opportunity to leverage this milestone as a year of appreciation, reflection, and renewal. A committee of Board members, volunteer, staff, and community partners has been formed to create a series of activities and events to commemorate this milestone. It is good news indeed to be turning 50 in such good health and vitality. Stay tuned for more information as plans begin to take shape.
