Stock shortages continue to be the thorn in most business’ side, and while we are also impacted with some models, as I write this we have a near-full compound of Mazda BT-50s and we are eagerly awaiting a big shipment of Ford Ranger and Everests in the coming weeks. We also have a huge order bank of vehicles to come in before the end of the year, most of which are sold, and with more orders every day we are expecting a very busy second half of the year. When consumers purchase a qualifying vehicle the consumer pays the dealer price at the dealership. If the fund is exhausted (due to demand) no discounts (rebates) will be offered until funds have been replenished. Once the scheme restarts, only vehicles registered from the restart date will be eligible for rebates. If you have more questions about the fund, answers may be found on the NZTA website. Just when we thought 2020 was a year like no other, 2021 seems to be one out of the box. We have just finished off our second quarter and like the start of the year it’s been an all-time record for the team.

As a consequence of the Clean Car Discount initiative announced by the Government in recent weeks, many new petrol and diesel vehicles will increase in price from the 1 January 2022. We have had some keen interest in the new Ford Escape plug in hybrid, which is just starting to arrive in NZ. We have our first demonstrator model arriving in September, so please register your interest early with our team to be one of the first to see this when it arrives. While the Clean Car Discount has caused quite a bit of debate in the public forum, I wanted to point out some

information that hasn’t been widely publicised on how the fund works. When consumers purchase a qualifying vehicle the consumer pays the dealer price at the dealership. The rebate is claimed back by the consumer separately through the NZ Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi) once the vehicle is registered. If the fund is exhausted (due to demand) no discounts (rebates) will be offered until funds have been replenished. Once the scheme restarts, only vehicles registered from the restart date will be eligible for rebates. If you have more questions about the fund, answers may be found on the NZTA website.

With prices increasing on most utes next year, we are experiencing extremely strong enquiry levels on Ford Ranger and Mazda BT-50 and my best advice is to get in and order now if you want to take delivery before the end of the year and beat the Government feebate. While we do have stock arriving, many are selling before they get in the country, so it might pay to check now if your farm vehicle, work ute or family tow vehicle needs an update.

Our Mazda team were very excited to see the All-New Mazda MX-30 M-Hybrid when it arrived at our Invercargill branch recently. This

very unique and stylish vehicle is a must-see; our team were very impressed with its power and driving dynamics when they recently drove it in Christchurch at a launch event. This vehicle is available for test drives, but you’ll want to get in quick on this one. See more detail on page 3.

Our Service teams deserve a special mention as this year they are feeling the impact of increased sales of vehicles and accessories, compounded with the anniversary of the national lockdown last year when many services and WOFs were deferred. A large number of our staff are working overtime to keep up with the demand and keep our customers on the road.

MAZDA NEWS

Back in May we put the call out to Southlanders to help us get behind the Mazda NZ and Make-A-Wish New Zealand’s Paper Crane Project and you certainly delivered! With the support of local schools, the community and our staff we made 2,000 cranes to send to Mazda NZ.

Mazda NZ recently let us know they received roughly 47,000 beautiful paper cranes and will be donating $20,000 to Make-A-Wish New Zealand to help make kiwi kid’s wishes come true.

All cranes sent to Mazda NZ have now been sent to Hiroshima where they will be strung together in groups of 1,000 (called a senbazuru) before being placed at the Children’s Peace Monument at Hiroshima Peace Park.

A huge thank you to all those that contributed to this fantastic project.

Paper Crane Project a huge success

The Mazda NZ and Make-A-Wish New Zealand Paper Cranes Project was designed to symbolise a bright future and hope for New Zealand children.

The story behind the project starts in August 1945 when Hiroshima was destroyed by an atomic bomb. They lost approximately one third of the population, with tens of thousands more injured. Toyo Kogyo – as Mazda was then called – immediately began distributing medical supplies, setting up consultation centres around the city to help families reunite.

A young girl, Sadako Sasaki who survived the atomic explosion, was diagnosed with leukaemia from the radiation. While in hospital a fellow patient told her about the legend of the cranes. This inspired her to begin folding paper cranes. Sasaki had exceeded her goal

of 1,000 cranes when she died. After her death, Sasaki’s friends and schoolmates raised funds to build a memorial – the Children’s Peace Monument for her and all the children who had died from the effects of the atomic bomb. At the foot of the statue is a plaque that reads, “This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world.” This has now been extended to remember all the child victims of world conflicts.

Covid-19 has diminished visitors to Hiroshima and consequently the number of paper cranes left at the Monument has greatly decreased.

In May Mazda NZ teamed up with Make-A-Wish New Zealand to create the Paper Crane Project. During May they asked people to make paper cranes and drop them into Mazda dealerships around the country, who then forwarded them on to Mazda NZ. For every 1,000 cranes they received Mazda NZ committed to donating $1,000 to Make-A-Wish New Zealand (up to a total of $20,000). All cranes received were then sent to Hiroshima, Japan to be placed on the Children’s Peace Monument.

The story behind the Paper Crane Project and the Children’s Peace Monument

THE LEGEND OF THE CRANESJapanese legend has it that for every 1,000 paper cranes a person makes they are granted one wish.

Hannah Dick was a champion, making a whopping 500 paper cranes for the project.

FORD NEWS

The New Ford Puma is bold, stylish, sophisticated, and comes packed with safety and technology features to protect you and your passengers. We could rave about the fantastic features of the Puma, but we thought it was time to hand it over to a busy, independent professional to put it to the test in the real world. Who better than the popular General Manager of the Southland Sharks and a Board Member of the New Zealand National Basketball

League, Jill Bolger!

We provided Jill with a Ford Puma and asked her to take us along for the ride as she discovers all its features in not only her busy professional life, but her life outside of Basketball Management.

Follow us on Facebook for updates from Jill as she explores this stylish, clever SUV.

Discovering the fantastic features of the Ford Puma with Jill

Travelling in comfort, arriving in style! Jill recently took the Ford Puma to the beautiful Queenstown for Southland Shark Alex Pledger’s wedding.

The All-New Ford Escape is ready for anything, and so is 2021 World Multisport Champion Dougal Allan! In a collaboration with Macaulay Ford and Ford NZ, Dougal is putting the All-New Ford Escape through its paces in his busy life as a husband and father, coach and professional athlete.

Follow Dougal’s journey on

Facebook as the Ford Escape seamlessly adapts between his busy family life and his training trips to remote parts of Central Otago. He’ll be making full use of the eco-friendly power, space and convenience and clever connectivity as he travels around our regions with his trademark kayak and bike loaded on the roof.

Macaulay Ford & Ford NZ collaborate with our local world champion

Ready to hit the road! Dougal put his Ford Escape to work as soon as he took delivery.

Earlier this year we had a customer send in a photo of one of our vintage window stickers on their Ford Anglia. We loved it so much we had them recreated in a limited run so we could give them away to our customers, particular those with a classic Ford. We are down to our last stickers, if you’d like one pop into our Invercargill, Queenstown or Wanaka branches to get yours.

Ford website redesignedYou may have noticed our Ford website is looking a little bit different lately. It’s had a makeover with an all new look, faster loading times, and a new layout to make it easier for customers to find the information they need and improve the over all customer experience.

How the rebate works:

On Sunday 13 th June the Government announced details of their Clean Car Programe, with the first phase of the programme, the Clean Car Discount (CCD) starting from the 1st July 2021 and running through to the end of the year.

The aim of the programme is to reduce CO2 emissions of light vehicles in New Zealand by giving New Zealanders the opportunity to purchase an electric vehicle at a price more comparable with petrol and diesel-fuelled vehicles.

The first phase of the CCD offers consumers a discount in the form of a rebate when they purchase a qualifying new or used light Electric

Vehicle (EV) or Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle (PHEV). To qualify for the rebate the vehicle must have a 3-star safety rating or higher and be valued under $80,000 (including GST and on road costs). Customers are eligable to claim the rebate on a qualifying vehicle if they are the first New Zealand registered owner.

The rebate can be claimed after the vehicle has been registered and applications will be accepted until the 28th February 2022, however, rebates are subject to funding. If the fund for the first phase of the programme is exhausted (due to demand) no further rebates will be offered.

The next phase of the programme is due to begin on the 1st January 2022 (subject to legislation). Once the next phase of the programme begins only vehicles registered after the restart date will be eligable for a rebate.

The great news is the All-New Ford Escape PHEV and the First-Ever Mazda MX-30 (EV) both qualify for the rebate. If you are in the market for an EV or PHEV vehicle, don’t miss out on the rebate - contact the team to order yours today.

To find out more about the CCD visit the NZTA website.
