IzaiahBrownisthefastestnativeofAmsterdam,NYinhistory.InMayof2016,hecapturedthe400-meterfinalsattheBigTenConferenceChampionships,heldinLincolnNebraska.TheRutgersUniversityfreshman’stimewas45.27seconds,thefifthfastesttimeinthecountryatthatdistancein‘16.ThateffortqualifiedBrownforthe2016OlympicTrialsheldinEugeneOregon.Atthetrials,hefailedtoqualifyforRio.Todosohewouldhavehadtobeat44.82seconds.Ifhecontinuestoprogressatthepacehehasthusfar,by2020,IzaiahBrowncouldbecometheveryfirstAmsterdamnativenotjusttoparticipateinanOlympicsbuttomedalaswell.DuringhisfreshmanseasonatRutgersallBrowndidwasfinishsecondteamAll

Americanforthe4x400mrelay,wintheBigTenIndoorTrackAthleteoftheYearandtheBigTenFreshmanAthleteoftheYearawards,becometheBigTenIndoorChampioninthe400m,getnamedtotheFirstTeamAllBigTenIndoorsquad,wintheBigTenOutdoorChampionshipinthe400m,andearnFirstTeamAllBigTenOutdoorhonors.Itissafetosaythatnotrack&fieldperformerinthehistoryofAmsterdameverputtogetheramoresuccessfulfirstyearasaDivisionOneathlete.WhatmakesBrown’ssuccessevenmorespecialwashisupbringinghereinAmsterdam.HisdadwasEddieBrown,atrackteammemberduringhisowndaysatAmsterdamHighSchool,whowaskilledinacaraccidentwhenIzaiahwasjustfouryearsold.ThatleftIzaiah’smom,CrystalAlbinotoraisehimandayoungersisteronherown.Brownadmitshedidnotmakedoingsoeasy.Hewasintroubleallthetime,especiallyinschool.Thoughhewasanaturalathleteandwasforcedtotryoutforeverysportimaginablebyaconcerneduncle,hedislikedallofthemandquiteachone.Hegotintograffitibigtimebyhismiddleschoolyearsandlatertoldalocaljournalistthathisfavoriteactivitybackthenwasroofjumping.BythetimehereachedAmsterdamHighSchool,hisfutureprospectslookedbleak.AkeyturningpointcamewhenhewascaughtintheactoftaggingLynchMiddleSchoolandsuspended.HismotherconfrontedhimwithastackofpaperworkshetoldhimwerelegaldocumentsshewasabouttosignthatwouldgranthisgrandparentsinGlen,NYlegalcustodyofIzaiah.Afraidthathewouldbesentintoexileandlosehisfriends,Brownpromisedhismomhewouldstayoutoftrouble.Butheprobablywouldnothavebeenabletokeepuphisendofthatbargainifitweren’tfortheAndersenfamily.ChristianAndersenwasoneofIzaiah’sbestfriends.BrownstartedhangingaroundtheAndersenhomeandChristian’sparents,BillandChristinaAndersenmadehimfeelwelcomethere.Itwasn’tlongbeforeIzaiahwasstayingovernightattheirhousethreetofourtimesaweek,ineffectbecomingtheirfifthchild.Asaresult,BillAndersenwasprovidingthefatherlydisciplinethathadbeenmissingfromBrown’supbringing.Thatimprovedfocusanddisciplineoutsideofschooltranslatedintoimprovedperformanceinside.TeachersandtrackcoacheswhohadexperiencedthemischiefmakingoftheyoungerIzaiahhadalsowitnessedsparksofhispotentialbothinsidetheclassroomandespeciallyontherunningtrack.Theygavehimsecondandthirdchancestoprovetothemandtohimselfthathehadmaturedenoughtobewillingtotrybeingsuccessfulinbothofthosearenas.HisbreakoutmomentcamewhenIzaiahcapturedthe400-metersprintattheprestigiousEddyInvitationalinSchenectadyasafreshmanwithadominatingtimeof47.8seconds.Thatjusthappenedtobethesecondfastest400registeredbyany

firstyearhighschoolsprinterintheentirecountry.Itwasajaw-droppingperformancethatconvincedyoungBrownthathejustmighthaveafutureinthesport.Duringthenextthreeyears,IzaiahresettheAmsterdamHighSchooltrackrecordbooksandledtheteamtosomeofitsmostsuccessfulseasonsever.HefollowedthatupwithhisamazingfirstyearatRutgers.ButmisfortunescontinuetomaketheirpresenceknowninBrown’slife.Duringthesummerof2016,Izaiah’shomeonBunnStreetinAmsterdamwasdestroyedbyfireandBrownlostallofhisworldlypossessionsinthatblaze.Theentirecommunityrespondedbyhelpinghimandhisfamilywithdonationsofitemslostandorganizingfundraisersontheirbehalf.BrownisnowbackatRutgersforhissophomoreseasonandhisentirehometownarerootinghimon.

January 3 – A Salute to Amsterdam’s church-based youth basketball programs IcouldnotfindanAmsterdambirthdayforthisdatebutonJanuary3,1521PopeLeoXexcommunicatedMartinLutherfromtheCatholicChurch.WhatsortofimpactdidthishaveonAmsterdam,NY?Here’sone.IfLeoandLuthercouldhavesomehowseeneye-to-eyeonthings,theevolutionofChristianityinthewesternworldandyouthbasketballintheRugCitywouldhaveplayedoutmuchdifferently.ButthebirthofProtestantismgaverisetomanydifferentdenominations,severalofwhichtookholdinAmsterdamintheformofwonderfullydesignedandsolidlyconstructedchurchbuildings.Nottobeoutdone,theirRomanCatholicbrethreninourcommunitybuiltbeautifulchurchesoftheirownandeventuallyfromeachofthesegloriousedificesemergedteam’sofyoungboyschosentorepresenttheircongregationandparishintheofficialfavoritesportofJesus,youthbasketball.ButbecausePopeLeoandMartinLutherhadthatbigdisagreementfourpluscenturiesearlier,theseteamsoflittleCatholicsandlittleProtestantswerenotpermittedtocompeteagainsteachother.CatholicYouthOrganization(CYO)basketballstartedinAmsterdamin1941,whenfivelocalCatholicParishes,MtCarmel,St.Michael’s,St.Joseph’s,St.Casmir’sandSt.Mary’sfieldedsixteams.St.Mary’swaslargeenoughtofieldtwoteams.Eventually,St.John’s,St.Stan’s,StStephen’sinHagamanandevenSt.Joseph’sinBroadalbinaddedsquads.TheAmsterdamChurchLeaguewasamucholderorganization,gettingitsstartasaYMCAfundedactivityattheturnofthe20thCentury.BackthentheteamsrepresentingtheCity’sProtestantparishescompetedagainstnotonlyeachotherbutalsoothersquadsrepresentingvariousAmsterdamneighborhoodsandsocialclubs.Bythe1950’showever,itwastheChurchLeagueandCYOthathadbecomeprimarilyresponsiblefordevelopingandchurningoutthetalentthatwouldonedaypropelthefreshman,JVandVarsityteamsrepresentingAmsterdamHigh,St.Mary’sInstituteandeventuallyBishopScullyinterscholastichoopsprograms.ThisexplainswhyformercoachesofthoseschoolteamslikeJohnVarsoke,AlexIsabel,TonyGreco,DutchHowlanandRickCetnarcouldoftenbefoundinthecrowdsthatgatheredatvenuessuchastheY,theArmoryandtheoldSt.John’sClubtowatchthesechurch-basedballclubscompeteagainsteachother.TheyknewthatthenextHarrisonWilson,JakeLabate,RalphFedullo,TimKolodziejorToddCetnarmightbeamongthelittleuniform-cladrug-ratsscramblingupanddownthosewellwornhardwoodfloors.

Thegamesthemselveswerenotwhatyouwouldcallthingsofbeauty.Teamsrarelyscoredmorethan20-30pointsandtherewereusuallymoreturnoversandfoulsthanbasketsbutforgenerationsofAmsterdamkidslikeme,CYOandChurchLeaguebasketballwasacherishedpartofourchildhood.

January 4 – Happy Birthday Kathy Bylina Izzano TodayisKathyBylina’sbirthday.Actually,she’snolongeraBylina.HerlastnameisIzzanonow.That’sbecauseshemarriedAmsterdamnativeJimIzzanoaboutfourdecadesago.BothKathyandJimweremygoodfriendsandclassmatesintheWilburLynchClassof“1972.”Infact,thetwoofthemstarteddatingwaybackthenandwerevotedMr.&MissAHSinthe“ClassConsensus”thatwasincludedinour1972LynchYearbook.(Forsomeabsurdreason,IwasvotedClassClowninthatsamepoll!)Backinourhighschooldays,Kathywasafriendlyvivaciouscaptainofthecheerleadingsquadwhoalwayshadasmileonherfaceandakindwordtoshare.Jimmywasafunny,veryoutgoingkidfromtheSouthSide.Eventhoughhewasbarelyoverfivefeettall,hewasbuiltlikeafirehydrantandwasapowerhouserunningbackforanAHSRuggedRamfootballteamthatcapturedtwoconsecutiveClass-ALeaguetitles.Aftergettingmarried,theysettledinthetownofAmsterdamandraiseda

sonandadaughter,whilebuildingsuccessfulcareersoftheirown.JimmycouldsellahairbrushtoVinDieselandthelastIknew;KathywasstillhelpinghealthcarefacilitiessolveproblemsasaDirectorofProfessionalServiceswithMedAssets.She’sstillasfriendlyandvivaciousasshewasbackinhighschoolandherandherslightlycrazyhusbandarebothregulargolfer’satAmsterdamMuni,whichiswhereIrunintothemmostoften.IfrequentlytrytoremindJimmyhowluckyhewastofindagirllikeKathyforawife.WheneverIdohejustrollshiseyesandasks“Notquiteasluckyasshewasthough,right?”Inevereveranswerintheaffirmative.HappyBirthdayKathy!

January 6 – Happy Birthday John Willoughby

Inaprettyprosperousone-newspapertownthesizeofAmsterdambackaroundtheturnofthe20thCentury,thejobofmanagingeditorofthatnewspaperwasoneofthecommunity’smostprominentpositions.JohnEdmundWilloughbytookoverthatjobattheAmsterdamEveningRecorderonJanuary1,1907.Onethingwasforsure,noonewhosatinthatchairbeforeorsincecouldmatchthebluenessofhisbloodline.HewasadescendantofRevolutionaryWarheroEthanAllenonhismother’ssideandCivilWarheroandformerUSPresident,UlyssesGrant,onhisdad’s.AnativeofCanoga,NYinSenecaCounty,hewasbornonJanuary6,1861.Hisfatherwasaprettywelltodoman-of-the-clothandWilloughbyhadaprettyprivilegedupbringinginthecommunitieshisfatherpastored.AccordingtohisRecorderobituary,Willoughbywas

supposedtoattendHamiltonCollegebutforsomereasoncompletedhiscollegiatestudiesathome.HebeganhiscareerinjournalismasareporterfortheUticaObserverin1882.AyearlaterhecametotheRugCitytodothesamejobwiththeAmsterdamRecorder,thenknownastheDemocrat.Healsofoundawife.HemarriedAmsterdamnativeMinnieKatherineSalisburyinNovemberof1884.HisfirsttenureattheAmsterdamnewspaperlastedforeightyearsuntil1890,whenheheadedwesttobecomepublisheroftheLittleFallsHerald.JustninemonthslaterhecamebacktoAmsterdamtoagainworkfortheRecorder.Healsogotinvolvedinlocalpolitics.AstaunchRepublican,WilloughbyservedasclerkoftheMontgomeryCountyBoardofSupervisorsfrom1892-93.Thenin1894hebeganathree-yeartermasAmsterdam’scitytreasurer.In1896,hereceivedanoffertobecomeeditoroftheKingstonFreeman,whichheaccepted.HespenteightyearsatthatjobandmighthaveremainedtherefortherestofhiscareerifthepublishersoftheRecorderhadnotwooedhimbackasecondtimebyofferinghimthepositionofmanagingeditor.HekeptthattitlefromJanuary1,1907untilhisdeathin1929.Duringthoselasttwodecadesofhislife,WilloughbybecameoneofAmsterdam’smostprominentcitizens.Inadditiontobeinggiftedwiththepen,hewasawonderfulpublicspeakerandwasinconstantdemandonthelocalbanquetcircuit.WhenWWIbegan,hebecameAmsterdam’smostprolificWarBondspromoter.ManyofhiswritingswonawardsandoneofhiseditorialsaboutTheodoreRooseveltmeritedaletterofappreciationfromthe“HeroofSanJuanHill”himself.Asyoumightimagine,thisguygotveryinvolvedinthecommunityaswell.HewasaforceontheBoardofTradeandoneofthefoundersofitspredecessororganization,theChamberofCommerce.HewasanactivememberofSt.Ann’sChurch,teachingaSundayschoolclassthereformanyyearsandhewasalsoaMason.Heandhiswiferaisedonechild,asonnamedBernard,whogavehisparentstwogranddaughters,RitaandVirginia.BothweretreasuredbyWilloughbyandbothbecamegifteddancersandlocaldanceinstructors.VirginiawouldgoontomarryAlfredNobleandher“VirginiaWilloughbyNobleDanceStudio”wouldbecomeanAmsterdamculturalinstitution.Duringthelatterstagesofhislife,Willoughbybeganexperiencinghearttrouble,whichflareduponhiminFebruaryof1929.HisdoctoradvisedhimtogetawayfromworkandrestsoheandhiswifewenttovisitanephewinAlbany.HeneverreturnedtoAmsterdam.Hesufferedaheartattackanddiedathisnephew’shome.Hewas68yearsoldatthetimeofhisdeath.

January 8 – Happy Birthday Lawrence Celmer InJuneof1958,threeteenagerswerepicturedintheAmsterdamRecorderreceivingAmsterdamRotaryClubServiceAwards.OneofthemwasLawrenceCelmer,whowastheonlysonandchildofAmsterdamPoliceChiefAndrewCelmerandhiswifeValeria.Nineyearslater,theRotaryClubwasstillhandingoutcheckstooutstandingseniorsfromthetwoAmsterdamhighschoolsbutinsteadofServiceAwardstheywerenowcalledtheLawrenceJ.CelmerMemorialScholarships.Here’swhy.CelmerwasborninAmsterdamonJanuary8,1941andraisedonSanfordAvenue.Hewasnamedafterhisgrandfather,aPolishimmigrantwhocametoAmsterdamandopenedupapopulartavernonReidStreet.AftergraduatingfromAmsterdamHighSchoolin1958,“Larry”wenttoHolyCrossCollegein

Massachusettsandearnedadegreeinchemicalengineering.Healsojoinedtheschool’sMarineReserveOfficersTrainingCorps(ROTC)andwhenhegraduatedfromcollegehewascommissionedasecondlieutenantintheMarineCorps.Hewasobligatedtodoathree-yearhitchbutwhenhecompletedit,heoptedtoextendhisserviceforanother12monthsandvolunteeredtodotheadditionalyearinVietnam.AtthetimehetoldacollegeroommatethathewantedtogetintothefightthatwasthenraginginthatdividedSoutheastAsiancountry.Hisplanwastocompletetheone-yeartourandthenattendlawschool.OnMarch18,1967,Celmer,whohadbythenbeenpromotedtocaptain,was

leadingasearchanddestroymissionagainsttheenemynearthetownofQuangNgaiwhenhewashitbyafatalgunshottohisupperleftchestanddiedinstantly.HisparentswerevacationinginFloridawhenthetelegramnotifyingthemoftheironlychild’sdeathreachedtheAmsterdamPoliceDepartment.TheyreturnedhomeandburiedtheirboywithfullmilitaryhonorsinSt.StanislausCemetery.TheAmsterdamRotaryClubthenimmediatelydecidedtorenametheirannualserviceawardsinhonorofthisgallantyoungmanandAmsterdamPoliceChiefCelmermadeithissolemnresponsibilitytohandoutthescholarshipchecksfromthatpointforwardasawayofhonoringhisbelovedson.

OneofthemanyreasonsIstartedthisblogwastoinspireyoungpeopleinAmsterdamwithstoriesoftheachievementsofthosewhocamebeforethem.Everyyearsinceforever,youngmenandwomenhavegraduatedfromAmsterdamHighSchoolandgoneontodosomeamazingthingsintheworkplacestheyhavechosenforthemselves.Today’sBirthdayCelebrantisaclassicexample.HernameisMarlenaWerder,butbackin1982shewasstillMarlenaAmmerall.ShehadjustgraduatedfromAHSandwasheadingtoRensselaerPolytechnicInstitutetostudyengineeringbutshereallywasn’tsurewhatshewantedtodoinlife.StudyingengineeringatRPIisnotacakewalkforanystudent.Inadditiontohavinggoodacademicskills,successincollegerequiresveryyoungpeopletoacceptthefactthatwhattheyachieveisentirelyuptothem.Marlenafoundthatshe
