Shipments drop, sales rise in June CRIA statsStatistics for the month of June releasedby the Canadian Recording IndustryAssociation (CRIA) show that while netshipments of records, cassettes and compactdiscs are down slightly from last year, netsales are up significantly, due largely to theincreasing popularity of the compact discconfiguration.
Vinyl sales continue to plummet; returns
CBS and True Northpact distribution dealCBS Music Products .Canada has signed anew, long-term distribution agreement withBernie Finkelstein's True North Records. Theannouncement was made by Paul Burger,President CBS Music Products Canada, whocalled the deal "a rebirth for the label as TrueNorth continues its leading role in Canadianmusic."
True North, which has garnered 34 goldand five platinum albums in its 21 -yearhistory, had cut back its roster in recentyears. Under the new deal, True North willseek out new talent, which for the first timewill include international as well as domesticacts. Finkelstein says he anticipates signing atleast three new acts over the next two years.
CBS Canada President Paul Burger (r) and thelabel's Vice President of A&R, RichardZuckerman, flank True North President BernieFinkelstein at recent signing.
True North's expansion comes at a
difficult time for independent recordcompanies, with several labels havingcollapsed and others experiencing financialproblems. "The situation is not that good, but I think the situation has never been thatgood," says Finkelstein. "I don't think thesituation is any worse than it has ever been. Ithink what we're all beginning to notice at thesame time is that the situation has never beenthat strong...I think that a strong Canadianmusic business will not be built the day aftersomething is a problem. It has to be built inthe years in between these problems. I'm notnaive, I don't think it's an incredibly positiveeconomy that we're in at present, but I'm asoptimistic as I've always been about what Ido."
Finkelstein says he is excited about thenew agreement. "I'm particularly interestedin discovering talent and getting it recorded ina singular manner. I missed that." The firstsigning under the new deal is GregoryHoskins, a 25 -year old singer/songwriterfrom Toronto, and his band, The StickPeople. They will begin recording withJon Goldsmith in September.

Teacher Mele tastessuccess as songwriterAspiring songwriter Michele Mele is
beginning to see her dream of a musicalcareer come true. Her single, That's All I
Know, performed by Bad Bear on RDRPromotions, has been playlisted across thecountry and stands at No. 29 on the RPMA/C chart.
But despite a musical background (hermother, father and brothers are allmusicians), the Toronto native almost didn'tbecome a musician at all. "I was in science (atuniversity) for three weeks, and I thought`this is silly'. Something was missing inside. Ithought, `if I worked as hard in music as Ihave to work at this, I'd be fabulous'." A lastminute audition earned Mele, a talentedpianist, a place at U of T's faculty of music.
Mele started her career as a high schoolmusic teacher. But despite the satisfaction shederived from teaching, something was stillmissing. "The paperwork and the politicskind of got to me...I felt frustrated. Myhusband said 'Quit if you're not thrilled. Ifyou want to write, write'."
Mele has been writing for three yearsnow, and has a new single and an album inthe works. "I'm very impatient," she laughs."After the first three weeks, I wanted a hitsong." But she plans to persevere. "I lovedoing this ... a little bit of success makes youfeel great."

A manufacturer's advice to the indie sector
In this time of rapid change in the music industry, and of financial trouble for many,
things are harder than ever for the
always hearty but ever -struggling in-
dependent sector. Lacking the huge ap-
paratuses and budgets of the ma-
jors, independent ar- tists and labels have
always struggled to keep their heads
above water and get their music through to radio and the public.
World Records, based in Bowmanville, Ontario, has been manufacturing records, cassettes, and, more recently, CDs, for the in-
dependent sector since 1969. Over the years its president, Bob Stone, has developed a
healthy respect for his clientele. "Independents are sharper than hell," he
declares. "They're well informed, they know ahead of time what they want...even when we
get unsolicited enquiries, people are very well informed." He says independents were quick
Bob Stone
to adjust to the decline of vinyl and the rise of the CD. "In some cases they're more
knowledgeable than the majors, in terms of realising that's the way to go. We've been making CDs for the independent market for
at least six or seven years. Long before there
was a plant in Canada we were having to obtain CDs from out of the country for our
independent clients." One increasingly popular option for in-
dependents wanting to shop their songs to radio is inclusion on a CD compilation.
CINRAM, Canada's largest manufacturer of records, cassettes and CDs, offers a CD com- pilation service, which is viewed by some as
an economical alternative to a full CD. Stone is critical of such services. "I don't believe in
them (CD compilations)," he says firmly. "I don't feel comfortable asking somebody to
combine their product with somebody else's. What if the other product is lousy and theirs
is good, and the lousy product happens to be the first cut the radio station hears?...As a
custom packager, we get exposed to a lot of junk, but it's not up to us to say we'll put this
on a compilation just to get a fee for doing it.
You're going to hurt a lot of independents
Mair discovers secrets in the Attic
There has been much written in the dailies and the trades on the apparent dismal future for independent recording companies
in Canada. But for all the stories of doom and gloom, there usually is also one of
growing success. In this case, the success belongs to Toronto's Attic Records.
The company's President, Al Mair, cites Attic's differences as its key to keeping
competititve."We've been around longer and
Rita Coolidge with Alexander Mair
have built up a catalogue that has value," says Mair. "We probably have more than any
other independent, (so) we're not only relying on a current hit."
The Attic catalogue includes five Nylons albums, five from Lee Aaron and two works
by Haywire. As well, Attic has Jennifer Warnes' Famous Blue Raincoat, "which has
gone double platinum," says Mair. "And Hagood Hardy. We're still selling The
Homecoming, which came out in 1976." He says Attic's total catalogue numbers more than 300 albums.
"But," he says, "most importantly, we've always had foreign product that we
represent in Canada. Things like Digital Underground, which is approaching gold.
You don't have the risk involved. You pay an
agreed upon royalty for Canadian rights only and you don't have to fund the videos. These
types of things are very, very important to us."
Mair says he believes that a lack of pure business skills has aided the recent demise of
several independent operations. "Most of the people in the business are in it because they
love music. In most cases they don't really have much experience in running a company.
They're entrepreneurs who haven't previous- ly run companies
. . . and don't have the
business skills (like budgeting and projec- tions) needed to run a recording company like
any other business. "We're fortunate because when we
started we had outside investors and that put disciplines on us that have carried through
from day one." One other factor that has helped keep
Attic as an intregal part of the Canadian recording scene is its global marketing.
"More than any other company in this
coun try," says Mair, "we've been aggressive internationally. We've just signed a major
deal with Korea that will put all our product out (there) this fall. We did a major deal with
Japan earlier this year (and) we've just done a major deal with Australia. Most of the in-
dependents here look upon the States as being. the only outlet. I'm quite happy to sell 60,000 Lee Aaron albums in Germany (because) in the end, it all goes to cover the costs of doing
business." Covering costs should be no problem for
Mair when it comes to what may be the biggest coup by a Canadian independent: the signing of Rita Coolidge to Attic (details of which were covered in RPM - June 16/90).
But while it would be easy to gloat, Mair doesn't want to appear smug about his
success. But when he predicts that the new Coolidge album "will go double platinum,"
you feel that he must be doing it with a smile.
RPM -

doing that. "It's different with a major. A major
has an A&R department, they control the product, and it's their money if they want to
spend it. But if I've spent 20 grand on my tape, and I know I've got a helluva good tape, and I put it onto a compilation with six
demos, what does that say about me as an ar- tist?"
Stone feels that since independents are investing not only their time and creativity,
and quite often their money as well, they should pay careful attention to all facets of
their package, and spend their money wisely. "You want your product to stand alone, and
you want to be able to promote it. The packaging is crucial. One of the reasons
(Vancouver -based label) Nettwerk was so successful was because of their insistence that
the product had to be every bit as good as, if
not better than, a major release. That's what
got them their deal with Capitol. The packag- ing was incredible, and the music backed it
up. It was a full package." Stone advises indies to pay as much at-
tention to the packaging of their product as they do to the music; World Records treats
packaging so seriously they employ five graphic artists. He says that striking and at-
tractive packaging can be produced economically, noting that a black and white
cover can look every bit as professional as a colour package. Packaging, he says, is crucial
to attracting the attention of radio, probably the hardest nut to crack for the independent
artist. "If the package isn't great, nobody's going to look at it. Radio stations don't want
to play Canadian content. That's a fact of life. They want any excuse they can come up with not to play Canadian content. So when they get all the records in from a record com-
pany, they've got to see that it's excellently packaged. "You look at custom pressing in two
ways, One, for airplay, but it also gives you a lot of credibility, to be able to go to a major
and shop your product and say 'look, I take enough pride in my product that I can mould
my future, I can see the way I want to be presented."'
After a Kingswood Theatre sold -out show at Canada's Wonderland (north of Toronto) on
July 11th, Capitol recording act Heart received double platinum awards for their Brigade album and also picked up gold for the album's
first single All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You. The Capitol crew were on hand for the
presentation (I to r) Al Andruchow (VP Sales), Mark Audes (bass), Ann Wilson (vocals),
Dennyi Carmassi (drums), Rob Widmann (U.S. Product Manager), Nancy Wilson
(guitar/vocals), Howard Leese (guitar/keys) and Peter Diemer (Director of National Promotion).

(EC: Must have been before my time!) If not packed carefully, most CD jewel boxes arrive
broken. They seem to be more fragile than those old 78s! Meanwhile, there are a lot of
packages that arrive at RPM with CDs and
cassettes literally falling out of the package,

in more secure packaging for the mail and

CAPS to boost Canadian
Canadian radio programming received a boost July 3 with the announcement by KEY Radio Limited of the launch of the CAPS
(Canadian Artists and Programmers on Satellite) Radio Project. CAPS, the first pro-
ject of its kind in Canada to focus exclusively
on radio, will provide grants and studio and satellite time to aspiring producers of radio
programmes for syndication. It is the brain- child of Eric Rothschild, KEY's Vice Presi-
Corporate Affairs, is the product of a longstanding interest in radio syndica-
tion. "In the last ten years, syndication has
really blossomed in the United States," he
says. "You had an individual who had a good idea for a radio programme and was able to
produce it and get it to a whole bunch of radio stations. No one station could afford to
do the show, but if they syndicated it, it became a profitable venture." Success stories
like Westwood One spawned a crop of suc- cessful syndicated radio programmes.
"People here in Canada looked at that and said 'maybe there's money to be made in
syndication in Canada,"' Rothschild con- tinues. "A few things are different. One is
that we've got fewer than 500 private English -
language radio stations (compared to about 9,000 in the U.S.). While one percent of the
market in the States could make it profitable, it sure couldn't up here. So it has proved to
be tougher than in the States." Rothschild realised that while there was
no shortage of people with good ideas, and a pressing need for more indigenous radio pro-
gramming, something more was needed. "It seemed to me there was a pattern. The sta-

Fall tour to launch Murray's new album
Anne Murray's latest album, her 29th for Capitol, ships across North America this
month to coincide with a series of fall con- certs. Titled You Will, the new album was
produced by Jerry Crutchfield and the first single is already charting with country and A/C programmers. A "most added" status
on the Gavin Report has boosted the release in the U.S.
Marlene Palmer, of Palmer Publicity Ink, who handles press and publicity for
Murray, reports that the Capitol star considers the new album, "a bit of a page
from her past, noting that it is slightly reminiscent of the sound of her albums in the
late seventies." More than forty concerts have been scheduled in support of the new release, including Cincinnati (Aug 18), Chicago at
Poplar Creek (19), Detroit (20), Los Angeles at the Greek Theatre (Oct. 27), San
Francisco (28) and then into Las Vegas for six nights at the Hilton (Nov. 6 through 11). There is also a return engagement at The
Trump Plaza (16 to 18) and the Music Fair Theatre in Westbury, N.Y. for three nights
(23 to 25). Murray has also been scheduled to tape a
CBC-TV special in Florida early in the new year for a March broadcast on the network.
radio syndication
gramming, and a lot of creative people want to produce the programming. (We asked
ourselves) what could we do to make all that happen?" The acquisition by KEY's parent com-
pany, Maclean Hunter, of Selkirk Com- munications, provided the opportunity to
translate the project into reality. In addition to providing grants ($4.1 million over five
years), CAPS has established regional studios in Toronto, Calgary and Charlottetown, and
.. Radio syndication is an area I've been interested in for the last ten years ... "
will provide free satellite delivery for syn- dicated programming. To oversee the project, KEY brought in
Bob Mackowycz, a 13 -year radio veteran well known for his work at Toronto's Q 107 and
Ottawa's 54 Rock, and a man whose vision coincided with Rothschild's. "It was one of
those instances where you read a job descrip- tion and wonder whether the people knew you and wrote it specifically for you. Radio
syndication is an area I've been interested in for the last ten years...I was really motivated by the vision of the programme. It may sound
like a cliche, but it's true...If it was just win- dow dressing, just corporate politicking,
that's of little interest to me." With the happy meeting of Mackowycz
and Rothschild, the vision of the project ex- panded. "It has evolved into realising that
it's not enough just to write the cheque, it's not enough just to provide the facility, we
have to provide some guidance, too," ex- plains Rothschild. "The project was intended
to act as a catalyst, to help stimulate the pro- duction of new programming, help indepen-
dent entrepreneurs have a chance to become successful." Mackowycz waxes philosophical
about syndication's potential. "There's the psychological impact. People in this sector of
the industry now know that there is some sup- port, and there are obvious side benefits from that: the sense of national radio...taking this
fledgling sector and infusing, not just money, but energy and vision as well...From the na-
tionalist point of view, in my programming experience, we've been invaded by the American hordes. Our programme will help
turn things around...For example, in the field of comedy. Humour is topical, it's local. Dan
Quayle is amusing, but so is Jean Chretien."
Rothschild and Mackowycz stress that the aim of CAPS is to assist a diverse range of
programming, from comedy and music to radio drama and documentary, and the first
grants offered under the project attest to this. One went to Intrepid Records to produce a live broadcast of the Independent Cancon
showcase at the recent New Music Seminar in New York; the other was given to Toronto's The Syndicate to assist with their popular
programme, The Parent Report. Mackowycz sees great things ahead for
syndication. "Canadians are often called a

nation of documentary makers. I don't know if it's because the CBC has entered our gene
pool or what, but we seem to have a real flair for it. There's no reason the Americans
should dominate radio syndication. "Everybody we talk to about this project
gets ideas for radio shows. I think that's a good barometer."

Bruce hits the top. Bruce Hornsby's Across The River leapfrogs over Michael Bolton's
When I'm Back On My Feet Again to reach No. 1. Bruce's style is a little different than
on his last album, but his popularity hasn't changed much as the album A Night On The
Town also climbs upward to No. 14.
Phil going for four straight . . .
Phil Collins' next release from ...But Seriously
makes its debut this week. Something Happened On The Way To Heaven enters at
No. 92. He already has three No. 1 hits this year. No other artist even has two chart
toppers this year. The closest is Taylor Dayne who hit the top last week with I'll Be Your
Shelter after Love Will Lead You Back peaked at No. 2 in April.
A family affair . . .
! The group Wilson Phillips isn't the only offspring act to make a
dent on the chart. Two of Ricky Nelson's sons, together as Nelson, enter the chart at
No. 53 (the highest debut this week).
Rik Emmett has a Triumphant start! Big Lie, the first single from Rik Emmett's
Absolutely album (last week's RPM Front Cover Pick), made quite an impression on
programmers. It debuts at No. 67. Although Emmett made the chart very quickly, the
same can't be said for The Sattalites as Gimme A Little Sign finally appears after
being very close the past few weeks. It enters at No. 95.
Poison has a new supporter ... Unskinny Bop from Poison continues to climb very
quickly, up this week 13 points to No. 27. One new station playing it is CJQQ in
Timmins. Not that Music Director Dave McLaughlin suddenly decided to play it, but
rather because CJQQ just switched to an AOR format. Poison's album is also doing very well as Flesh And Blood inches into the No. 9 spot.
A new name in the Top 7! After shuffling positions for the past six weeks, someone has
been bumped out of the Top 7. That someone is Madonna. I'm Breathless drops to No. 8
while Wilson Phillips climbs a couple of notches to No. 6. MC Hammer appears ready
to claim the top album spot as his Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em hits No. 3. He is receiving strong radio support with Have You
Seen Her having this week's biggest jump, up 29 slots to No. 62.
U Can't do that . . .
! MC Hammer's U Can't Touch This is just one of the things you can't do on the chart. It joins Lisa
Stansfield's You Can't Deny It, Can't Stop Fallin' Into Love from Cheap Trick, and
Nelson's (Can't Live Without Your) Love And Affection.

Errol Ranville - walking a fineVeteran Canadian country music performerErrol Ranville walks many lines as he con-tinues to create music from his soul. He iscontinuously watching himself to make surehe doesn't repeat the mistakes of the past, orcreate situations he may not be able to get outof in the future.
Ranville is from "the woods" ofManitoba. Though a native Canadian, he wasexposed to white culture from birth. "I didn'tgrow up on the reserve," he says. "I grew upin an Icelandic community and any sort ofracism or discrimination was nevertolerated in our home. That was one of thestrongest things I remember about myfather . . . everyone was the same."
Coming from a large (twelve kids) andmusical family, the young Ranville quicklylearned to play music. "All the brothersplayed various instruments. There were twofamily bands for a while and my first publicperformance that I got paid for was when Iwas twelve years old." The third youngest ofthe twelve, Ranville, "was the only one whoemerged as a songwriter. I was the only onewho stuck to music after the thrill was goneof playing in a band."
The one 'family band' that really made itwas C -Weed, which Ranville led from 1980 to1987. The group recorded seven albums andhad two Canadian number one singles. Butthe band had signed a bad contract deal andRanville felt the pressure. Unhappy with thedirection his musical career was headed, heturned to drugs.
With the release of his ninth album thisyear, the torment of the drug -abuse days isdocumented in the track Oh Cocaine. Thesong is the most introspective cut on I WantTo Fly, an album full of introspection. "Thatsong is probably the only positive thing tocome out of that (period in my life)," says theman who left drugs and alcohol years ago.

"The greatest release . . .
it's like pent-up emotions you get to finally let out."
Ranville's personal writing style is a natural combination of his two greatest musical inspirations
- Bob Dylan and John
Lennon. "Those two have such an emotional impact," says Ranville. He is drawn to both Dylan's and Lennon's soul -exposing, truth
- telling lyrics, an honesty he has always tried
to keep in his own music. "My music and my style and approach have never fit into a
regular mold of a country artist. It's always been over the edge a bit, always country
crossover. I feel more like a poet. I feel like I
generally have something to say that means a lot to me."
Besides being cautious about his personal life's problems, Ranville now watches out for potential pitfalls in Canada's
changing political landscape. With the rise of consciousness about the plight of Canada's
natives, Ranville doesn't want to appear an opportunist. "The hearts of the native people
across the country . . .
I don't know if it's possible for (whites) to know how deep feelings ran for C -Weed. (But) I would never
want to be anywhere near exploiting (being native).
"Of course I've got a passion for the native cause and issues. I'm very keen and quick to realize there's a fine line here that
I'm going to have to stay on. I just leave the

country music hits, in both CD and cassette formats with full versions of each song. In making the announcement, Danny Strick, Vice President and General Manager
of BMG Songs, pointed out that their marketing campaign has "already drawn hundreds of responses." He went on to
explain, "We tried to create a sampler that was custom -designed to fill the special needs
of the advertising and motion picture/TV music users -
chronological, full versions, two formats (CD and cassette in each package),
compact, selective and fun." He concludes with, "Judging by the initial response, I think that we've succeeded."
The collection includes songs from the '50s, beginning with Patti Page's Doggie In The Window, through the '80s and closing with Eric Clapton's Pretending. Also includ-
ed are Michael Jackson's She's Out Of My Life, Eurythmics' Sweet Dreams (Are Made

. . . I
have a part to play. In university (studying sociology), I learned very well the importance
of a role model. I think that's what pulled me out of the hardcore addiction. I have my
father to thank for the way I function with (being native)."
Always one to try to be true to himself, Ranville have little time for trends. "To me,"
he says, "fad and fashion seem to take a lot
away from what's happening. I was never one for (either). I think I've always been a gypsy of sorts
. . . a cowboy."
Ranville also has no time for artists who are prefabricated, or have all their music
written for them. "It's not coming from the poet's heart
. . as far as I'm
concerned . . .
and that's what music is all about
. . . for Christ's sake."

Despite new competition CFTR continues courseContrary to what some might think, AMradio is alive and well in Canada. CFTR inToronto is one of five AM stations in themarket in the top ten (711,300 listeners and a4.3 share - BBM, Spring 1990). According toDon Stevens, Program Director at CFTR, thecurrent regulations in Canada are responsiblefor making people think in terms other thanjust what band a station is on.
"I don't think you can talk about AM orFM radio, quite frankly. I think you have totalk about formats and what do people wantto hear. If they want to hear a certain format,I'm not so sure that they care whether it's onFM or AM. I'm sure with some people, ob-viously, there's a stigma toward AM radio."He continues with "The number one Top 40station in Canada is us . . . and we're an AMradio station, so I don't think you can talkAM or FM, I think you have to talk aboutformats."
Stevens considers CFTR to be a full -service Top 40 station that changes with thesubtle nuances of music. "Right now, mostof the music is kind of contemporary danceoriented, so that's kind of where we've lean-ed, but basically we're a full service Top 40station." As he points out, he believes it'svery important for CFTR to be on top of
today's music. "We don't sit back and waitfor things to happen. I would think that if wedid . . . then someone could get ahead of us."He adds, "we have a couple of features onthe air where we definitely go out and playbrand new records. We are quite enthusedabout getting new music on the air." Musicaside, any successful radio station needs theright personalities to complement the format,,and Stevens likes his lineup. "When you havemusic and you have guys like Tom -Rivers,and Jesse & Gene, and Tarzan Dan . . . ofcourse they're in the mix."
With the recent switch of CFGM to TheHOG, CFTR has even more competition, but, as Stevens points out, there are some bigdifferences between the two stations."They're playing a lot of different musicthan we're playing. I think our targets are alittle different." Despite the new competi-tion, CFTR isn't changing anything. "Welook at the HOG, we look at MAGIC, welook at CKOC, we look at everybody, but wedon't react to anybody. We've obviouslybeen changing over the last five or sixmonths. We set a course in January and we'repretty much following it."
Promotions are important to any radiostation, CFTR uses the direct -to -the -people
FACTORing in the costs of the IndependentsThe concepts of supply and demand areeveryday realities at FACTOR. When sortingthrough the founda-tion's recentlyreleased annualreport, an excess ofone million dollarscan be found on theledger. One mayview this as an in-dication that all thefunds alloted to helpCanadian recordingtalent aren't beingput to use, butHeather Sym, FACTOR's Executive Direc-tor, has a simple explanation.
"Increases in private broadcaster con-tributions, loan repayments and interest in-come accounts for this uncommittedmoney." Sym continues with, "A lot of itcame in very near the end of our fiscal," sheexplains, "but I have every confidence thatFACTOR will find the funds fully committedduring the current fiscal . . . and I'm basingthis on the applications that have come in thus far."
Sym also says that FACTOR doesn'twork the loan repayments into its operatingbudget, thus avoiding a shortage should saleson supported projects not materialize.
Balancing any such "windfall" of cash isalways the threat of possible funding cuts bythe federal Department of Communications. But Sym says, in these days of slashedgovernment spending, that FACTOR' s sizemay be its saving grace. She says "whatthey've told us in the past is that we're not abig enough program, when they're looking atbudget cuts. When you look at Telefilm, withtheir hundreds of millions of dollars, what's afive million dollar program?"
The FACTOR executive says a meeting
Heather Sym
with the DOC is planned for the second weekof August at which time the program'srenewal will be discussed. "I still believe, atthe end of the day, that the program's goingto be renewed. But if it's renewed at the samelevel it's a form of cutback because of infla-tion," she says.
Another, related, group feeling the pinchof high costs is Canada's independentrecording industry. With the problems thatmany of Canada's independent labels face, the need to compete internationally is the keyto success. according to Sym.
"The Canadian independent musicindustry has very, very limited dollars withwhich to make their recordings," says Sym."FACTOR and VIDEOFACT are there tohelp offset some of the financing. But tocompete in the global marketplace . . . andthat's what you have to do if you're lookingto recoup your investment . . . is veryexpensive. There's no support out there tohelp these labels take their artists into theinternational marketplace."
Sym says she believes exportingCanadian talent and importing foreigncurrency should be the prime goal ofindependent labels. But she also citesFACTOR's limited reserves (just more than$260,000) in helping `indie' acts tour andshowcase on international stages. And whileshe acknowledges that the funds available areinadequate, she says "we've been talking togovernment and I think they're starting tograsp and understand the importance oflooking at the international marketplace."
Sym feels that "times are only going toget tougher" for Canada's independentmusic makers, but she also says thatFACTOR is committed to supplying as muchmoney as possible to meet the demands of theindependents.

people want to hear. We also want to knowwhat listeners are thinking about and whatkind of fun they want to have." An exampleof that fun was the Secretary's Day promo-tion in which CFTR avoided the stale 'takethem out to lunch' routine. Instead, theytook a group of secretaries to the top of abuilding and let them throw their typewritersoff. It clearly wasn't just fun for the par-ticipants, as Stevens chuckles when he ex-claims, "Oh boy, those things really smashwhen they hit the ground."
No one knows exactly what's in thefuture, but digital radio does seem to be apart of it. Stevens admits there are a lot ofdetails and regulations to be figured out, butsays it will be good for the business."Technically, I don't know how this is goingto work and I don't have a time frame . .. butI think digital radio is a pretty excitingadvancement and it's going to be a boost. It'sgoing to bring listeners to radio again, whomay have drifted off to something else."
Stevens seems to sum up the entireattitude of CFTR with "We're playing themusic people want to hear . . . we're doingthe things they want to hear . . . andwe're having a lot of fun, and that's the mainthing." He concludes with "The whole pointto this exercise is that we have a lot of fun andthat our listeners have a lot of fun."
Ottawa's Eight Secondssigns with AtcoWEA Music Canada has announced thatEight Seconds has signed a "major label dealwith Atco Records in the U.S." The Ottawa -based band will be distributed through WEACanada and will be releasing a new album,Big Houses, at the end of August.
Tell Diane, the first single taken fromthe album, follows a lull in the band's careerafter the 1986 success they enjoyed with theirdebut album (Almacatar) and single Kiss You(When It's Dangerous).
11[014111: dCape Bretoner Charlie Clements, nowliving in Ontario, has joined the Roto Notolabel for the release of You Gave Me YourLovin'. Clements released his first single,Some Such Foolishness, on the Shotgun labelin 1987, a single that garnered him muchairplay, particularly at BX-93 in London. Hisnew single, written by M. Stompin' Tom tour toconclude at Massey HallWhen Stompin' Tom Connors wraps his five -month Canadian tour at Massey Hall inToronto on Oct. 24th, he will have played 70towns and cities. He has now completed thewestern leg of a tour that played tocapacity houses, and is about to set out on atwo month swing through the Maritimes.
The country/folk legend will play twodates on Prince Edward Island, where hegrew up, and one concert on the MagdalenIslands, home of his wife Lena.
Connors opens his shows with "It'sgreat to be back . . . and it's going great."Brian Edwards, the tour's booking agent, says, "One of the reasons the tour is going sogreat is that Stompin' Tom is really lettingpeople know how he feels about Canada. Hecloses his show with a song called Unitywhich points out the benefits of all Canadiansworking together for one Canada."
Edwards also points out that it's obviousby the demographics that Connors' "uniquebrand of Canadiana has certainly beenmissed . . . attendance by those 25 years ofage and younger has been overwhelming."He concludes with, "Stompin' Tom hasbecome a real folk hero . . . receiving accep-tance by a whole new generation ofCanadians which has only served to fortifyhis faith in his cause."
Connors latest Capitol album (CD andcassette) is appropriately titled A ProudCanadian.

building and let them throw their typewriters off. It clearly wasn't just fun for the par-
ticipants, as Stevens chuckles when he ex- claims, "Oh boy, those things really smash
when they hit the ground." No one knows exactly what's in the future, but digital radio does seem to be a
part of it. Stevens admits there are a lot of details and regulations to be figured out, but
says it will be good for the business. "Technically, I don't know how this is going
to work and I don't have a time frame .. . but
I think digital radio is a pretty exciting advancement and it's going to be a boost. It's
going to bring listeners to radio again, who
may have drifted off to something else." Stevens seems to sum up the entire
attitude of CFTR with "We're playing the music people want to hear
. . . we're doing
the things they want to hear . . .
and we're having a lot of fun, and that's the main
thing." He concludes with "The whole point
to this exercise is that we have a lot of fun and that our listeners have a lot of fun."
Ottawa's Eight Seconds signs with Atco
WEA Music Canada has announced that Eight Seconds has signed a "major label deal with Atco Records in the U.S." The Ottawa -
based band will be distributed through WEA Canada and will be releasing a new album,
Big Houses, at the end of August. Tell Diane, the first single taken from
the album, follows a lull in the band's career after the 1986 success they enjoyed with their
debut album (Almacatar) and single Kiss You (When It's Dangerous).
11101111: I i ;Vall Cape Bretoner Charlie Clements, now living in Ontario, has joined the Roto Noto label for the release of You Gave Me Your
Lovin'. Clements released his first single, Some Such Foolishness, on the Shotgun label
in 1987, a single that garnered him much airplay, particularly at BX-93 in London. His
new single, written by M. Venet, was produc- ed' by G.N. Steward and qualifies as three -
parts Cancon (MAL). Clements is backed by Justice Band and his booking is handled by
Evergreen Talent Agency in Port Stanley.
Quebecer Debbie Drummond, now living in Havelock, Ontario, has joined Scoot
Irwin's ATI label and is scheduling her next release, Every Little Thing. "This will be
Debbie's first release in the U.S." says Irwin,
Stompin' Tom tour to conclude at Massey Hall
When Stompin' Tom Connors wraps his five - month Canadian tour at Massey Hall in Toronto on Oct. 24th, he will have played 70
towns and cities. He has now completed the western leg of a tour that played to capacity houses, and is about to set out on a
two month swing through the Maritimes. The country/folk legend will play two
dates on Prince Edward Island, where he grew up, and one concert on the Magdalen
Islands, home of his wife Lena. Connors opens his shows with "It's
great to be back . . .
and it's going great." Brian Edwards, the tour's booking agent, says, "One of the reasons the tour is going so great is that Stompin' Tom is really letting
people know how he feels about Canada. He closes his show with a song called Unity i
which points out the benefits of all Canadians working together for one Canada."
Edwards also points out that it's obvious by the demographics that Connors' "unique
brand of Canadiana has certainly been missed
. . . attendance by those 25 years of
age and younger has been overwhelming." He concludes with, "Stompin' Tom has
become a real folk hero . . .
receiving accep- tance by a whole new generation of
Canadians which has only served to fortify his faith in his cause."
Connors latest Capitol album (CD and cassette) is appropriately titled A Proud
Canadian.

"and it is by far the most country sounding record Debbie has released thus far in her
career." The session was produced in Nashville by Gilles Godard and qualifies as three-part Cancon.
ATI pulls another Dee CD cut from the popular on -air personality's Steal Of The
Night release. Titled Where The Sun Don't Shine, this will be the follow-up to Mountain Right, now at No. 44 on the RPM Country
100. .
"Like Mountain Right," says Irwin, this single has a good message in it and would
make a perfect segue with Johnny Paycheck's Take This Job And Shove It. A Dee original,
the new single was self -produced.
Terry Sheridan was in Nashville recently for writing sessions with his producer and co - writer Ron Demmans. The pair co -wrote
Sheridan's last three singles, I Can't Cross A New Bridge, Another Morning After and
Spend My Love On You. Sheridan's next single, Havin' A Lonely Time, has been
scheduled for an Aug 15th release. Studio production for Sheridan's album will begin
next year, following an extensive tour of Western Canada and the Maritimes.
Seen at recent CHAM concert at Superstars in Mississauga featuring Sweethearts Of The
Rodeo and Highway 101 (I to r) Janis Gill (Sweethearts), CHAM morning crew members
Cliff Dumas and Vickie van Dyke and Christine Arnold (Sweethearts).
Dee's Steal Of The Night gets Texas Rangers nod When ATI's Scoot Irwin heard that the
American League's Texas Rangers liked to hear country music played in their locker
room, he decided to give the visitors a little domestic sampling. The Rangers were in Toronto recently to play the Blue Jays and
Irwin's friend, Ian Duff, just happens to manage the visiting teams' dressing room at
the SkyDome. Irwin said that Duff had mentioned the Rangers' preference for country, so he supplied them with "a quantity of Michael
Dee's Steal Of The Night," cassettes and CDs. After the first game, Irwin says he
"called Ian to get (the Rangers') reaction and he told me they were very happy and pleased to receive (the music)."
Dee has had considerable play in the Rangers' home town of Arlington with Quittin' Time, so he was familiar to the players. His latest single, Mountain Right,
taken from the Steal Of The Night album, moves into the No. 44 slot on the RPM
Country 100 this week.

On his recent tour through the west, George Fox called in on as many programmers and
retailers as time allowed. He is seen above with Brian Hempel of the Winnipeg -based
National Records. Fox is currently making good headway up the charts with Lime Rickey,
a single taken from his WEA album With All My Might. The single moves into the Top 10 of this week's RPM Country 100.
Lisa Brokop has signed a management deal with Mascioli Management of Burnaby, B.C. The signing coincided with the young singer's
17th birthday (June 6), which turned out to be a very successful month for her. She won
two awards at the B.C. Country Music awards presentations: the Ray McAuley
Horizon Award for Most Promising Talent and a Citation for Gospel Performer for
Amazing Grace, the flip side of her current single, Daddy Sing To Me, now at No. 51 on

THE NEVILLE BROTHERS -Soul/PopBrother's KeeperA&M 75021 5312-WThe Neville Brothers have followed up1989's acclaimed Yellow Moon withBrother's Keeper, and from the coverart to the musical delights offered in-side, it's a brilliant package. TheNevilles' distinctive musical melangemixes dollops of soul, gospel, R&B,New Orleans jazz and reggae with thelovely vocal harmonies - by turnsforceful and tender - of the four NevilleBrothers. Originals like Steer Me Right,Sons And Daughters, Jah Love (writtenwith U2's Bono) and Witness arepolitically and spirtually-chargeddelights, and the Nevilles breathe newlife into the songs they cover: checkout Mystery Train, Bird On A Wire, andparticularly Aaron and Art's duet onLink Wray's Fallin' Rain. With scarcelya weak track in the lot, Brother'sKeeper is a rich tapestry of sound, bestappreciated on CD, which repaysrepeated listens. Co -produced byCanadian Malcolm Burn. (CD reviewed)

ZACHARY RICHARD - Cajun/RockWomen In The RoomA&M - 75021 53024WZachary Richard has excellent Cajuncredentials: his ancestors were amongthe original Acadian settlers who madethe long trek from Nova Scotia toLouisiana in the 18th century. WomenIn The Room, his eleventh album andhis first for a major label, combines therollicking accordian of his Cajun rootswith R&B and rock stylings. The resultis something less than the sum of itsparts, a pleasant if somewhat blandcollection of R&B-influenced rockballads, with the occasional accordian-fueled uptempo number thrown in forgood measure. Richard is at his best

Production by Stephen Street(who did so much to help map out TheSmiths' sonic territory) is crisp androbust, the packaging is clean, simpleand attractive, and the band exhibitssolid musicianship, deft guitar workand some nice lyrical flourishes. What's lacking is melodic and lyricalsparkle; the lyrics are a bit too cleverand the music a bit too convoluted tomake great pop songs. Butwhereas the group gained many ad-mirers in the '70s and '80s with hits likeMongoloid and Whip It, only trueDevotees will embrace Noodle as awork of any musical value. While manyof the lyrics are as weird andwonderful as previous Devo albumshave offered, Noodle's music is a let-down. Breaking up the family ... ! David Bowie and Poison have scattered the New Kids out
of the top 3 positions, though the Kids still
hold first and three of the Top 5.
Ten times lucky ... ! Four acts have been on all ten RPM long -form charts. They are
Van Morrison, Sinead O'Connor, Alice Cooper and the New Kids (Hangin' Tough).
The two other New Kids videos (Tough, Live and Step By Step) have been on for nine
weeks each.
A Capitol premiere ... ! Capitol Records has released its first long -form video.
Entitled Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em: The Movie, it is an hour-long story of
rapper MC Hammer's return to his home in Oakland. The songs from Hammer's
chart -topping album are interweaved with the storyline.
That's a rap .
! WEA has a new long - form, this time by rapper Ice -T. Featuring
almost twenty songs, The Iceberg Video runs for an hour and a half and contains footage
from Ice -T's concert in Vancouver last year. CBS has a big fall
. . . ! At a marketing
meeting towards the end of July, CBS unveiled a slew of product due out this autumn. Included were four major long -form releases. They are: Midnight Oil's live concert outside Exxon's N.Y. headquarters, Billy Joel's Storm Front tour, a live
performance by The Highwaymen (Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kris
Kristofferson) and a compilation of videos by Cheap Trick.

Judy Hotte makes her debut on the Burco label with Who's Lovin' Who?, an original
written by J.K. Gulley and Cyril Rawson. In- strumental and vocal baeking on this vinyl
single is very impressive with violins by Lenny Solomon and Norman Hathaway, Caudio
Vena on viola and cellist Jose Shapiro. Also included on the session were veteran studio
musicians; drummer Barry Keane, bassist Kim Brandt, Mike Francis on acoustic and lead guitar, and keyboardist Ray Parker.
Debbie Fleming and Larry Folk provided the background vocals. The single was produced
by Burke Carroll.
Michael Peters moves to ATI where he is readying his next release, The Little Old
House Out Back, a Peters original. He did very well with Grandpa's Day, his debut as a solo artist, which charted nationally, and is
now planning a tour across Western Canada which will take him into Edmonton for
Canadian Country Music Week '90.
