1. INTRODUCTION

This document explains step by step how to configure Newtec MDM3100 and MDM3300 modems and

access Dialog network of Astrium Services.

Terminal installation includes automatic line-up which can be done without external support

(Astrium NOC, Satellite operator NOC) as long as the terminal is provisioned into the system,

however in most cases Field Engineer is obliged to liaise with Astrium PoC / Engineer to finish

the line-up and commission the MDM3x00 modem into the Dialog platform of Astrium.

Pre-requisite:

- Satellite, FW carrier Symbol rate and Frequency are known (DPM Lineup data site_xxxx

document received)

- LNB and BUC LO frequencies are known

- Modem is provisioned at HUB side (correct Air MAC Address of modem is configured)

- PC / Laptop with Ethernet port is at disposal

- WEB browser is installed and operational; the latest Internet Explorer version is required !!!;

the use of other web browsers (Chrome, Opera, Firefox etc.) may result in some cases to fail

executing certain important setup scripts

2. CONNECT TO MODEM

Open Control Panel / Network and Internet / Network Connections. Modify your PC LAN (Local Area

Connection) Properties - IPv4 settings – to use the following IP address:

IP address: 192.168.1.10

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Default gateway: 192.168.1.1

NOTE: Your PC LAN settings may look different from pictures above, depends on operating system.

Page 5: A.02. DPM MDM Installation Guide

Connect a PC to any of the modem RJ45 ports. Open the browser and enter into the address line the

IP address 192.168.1.1 to access the modem’s GUI. When correctly loaded should display in address

line - http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/index and display the initial page of the modem.

NOTE: The initial page of modem’s GUI depends on many factors thus not displayed here.

NOTE: When first time connected to the modem via Ethernet LAN connection, your PC may ask you

to confirm the new Network location. Confirm it prior to accessing the modem web page.

6. ANTENNA POINTING

At this step revert to antenna and point it to the target satellite using prepared Spectrum Analyzer and

provided data – beacon and FW carrier frequencies.

7. TERMINAL COMMISSIONING

Press Skip Pointing button. In a case the modem was in a meantime rebooted / restarted and you

don’t see the below screen, select Terminal Installation from the menu on the left, respectively repeat

step 5, if necessary.

As soon as modem reboots bring up the terminal status window by selecting Terminal Status from the

menu on the left.

Observe the changing of the Modem Status. It should stop in synchronising status with Error 020. If

there is a new Software version for the modem available at the HUB, the modem will start

automatically download it. In such case wait until the process (including auto reboot) is finished and

only then continue.

Before proceeding to the next step perform the tests with satellite operator. For activating CW

(test carrier) see Appendix A and Appendix B of this guide.

Page 14: A.02. DPM MDM Installation Guide

Double-confirm the Air MAC address of the modem with Astrium engineer and observe again the

changing of the Modem Status.

The status should change quickly to network login.

Then to network layer initialization.

APPENDIX E – ALTERNATIVE CONNECTION TO MODEM

In a case you CAN NOT establish the connection with the modem using the default method (e.g. the

modem is not configured for default IP address), use the following procedure:

Check / Modify your PC LAN (Local Area Connection) IPv4 settings to activate the DHCP assigned

addressing.

NOTE: Your PC LAN settings may look different from pictures above, depends on operating system.

Page 22: A.02. DPM MDM Installation Guide

MDM3x00 installation guide v1.1 Page 22/22

Connect a PC to any of the modem RJ45 ports and open the LAN Status tab on your PC, and click

Details… to open the windows with assigned IP addresses details.

Write down the IPv4 Default Gateway address. This is the address to enter into browser to access the

modem’s GUI (when correctly loaded should display in address line - http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/index).

NOTE: The initial page of modem’s GUI depends on many factors thus not displayed here.

NOTE: As there might appear in some cases problem with the DHCP operation later during the

configuration of the modem, it is strongly recommended to change the PC LAN IP settings to fixed IP

(not to use DHCP) after successful initial connection to the modem according to above procedure. In

such case set the IP address, Subnet mask and Default gateway the same as were assigned by

DHCP (see Network Connection Details).
