$e Greek philoso-pher Zeno once theo-rized that no one and nothing is truly ever able to get to a set physical destination, continually taking steps – smaller and smaller each and every time until they be-come in#nitesimal – to-ward that spot. It’s surely a somewhat depressing idea, the notion that, if extrapolated upon, the completion of a planned task or goal is impossible.

Leave it to the ancient Greeks to come up with such a downer of an idea, I say.

But here’s where that particular paradox of motion Zeno developed is applicable in this space and at this time: We at the Spinal Column News-weekly, too, are continu-ally taking steps – some big, others not so big – to get to our ultimate goal of being the only com-munity newspaper you’ll ever need.

In the last month, we’ve made big strides in that direction, and eventually the strides we make will be less and less noticeable, but no less important, in our con-tinuing e!ort to provide the coverage and content our main constituency – you, the readers – needs, wants, and demands.

In the coming weeks, you’ll start noticing a

bevy of new editorial features – not from me, necessarily, or from our freelance team, but from members of the commu-nity just like you. But we don’t want to stop at the features we have already planned; we also want input from you on what you’d like to see.

Cooking tips from lo-cal chefs? Let us know. Spiritual advice from religious leaders in west Oakland County? We’d love to hear about it. A home repair column? Weekly musings on the area’s history from area historical societies? Book recommendations from local librarians? Perhaps!

What you want to see in the Spinal Column Newsweekly is of the ut-most importance to us, but we can’t provide that content if we don’t know what you’re thinking should grace the pages of our 53-year-old newspa-per.

So I guess Zeno, in some ways, was right. $ere will always be areas for improvement, ways we can better the Spinal Column Newsweekly to get as close as humanly possible to our goal, and we are getting closer to it each and every week. But with your help, sug-gestions, and feedback, you will, over time, see the steps we are taking to reach that goal shrink until eventually you can’t see them at all.

WEST OAKLAND’S NEWSWEEKLY

There is no ice that is 100 % safe. !e following chart is

a recommended guide to help judge recreational use of clear, solid blue ice and help you minimize your risk:

5” inches thick mini-mum for general use ("sherman, ice skaters, and foot tra#c)

8” inches thick mini-mum for travel by snow-mobile, O$ Road Vehicle (ORV)

(We do not recom-mend automobiles out on the ice. !is also voids any insurance claims)

Survey the ice, keep-ing in mind that ice conditions change day by day, lake by lake and location by location on the same body of water. Some signs of chang-ing ice conditions can be, but are not limited to: moving water near a stream, river, unseen spring or inlet, slushy areas, depressions in the snow, heavy snow, white “milky” or black col-ored ice and “frazzle” ice weakened by the freeze-thaw cycles. Frazzle ice is pocketed with tiny air pockets and o%en looks like frozen slush. !ese are all signs of thin ice or unsafe ice.

· Do not go out alone on the ice. Always take a partner or someone who

Sheri! ’s Department O!ers Ice Safety Tips

can call 911or go for help in an emergency.

· Do not make the "rst tracks on the ice. Check with someone who has experience with a par-ticular lake or pond be-fore you venture out on the ice.

· Always leave a travel plan with someone who can call for help and di-rect a search party if you do not return.

· Plan ahead by dress-ing appropriately for changing weather condi-tions. Dress in layers to protect all exposed parts of your body. Consider wearing a personal &ota-tion device (PFD) as part of your overall protective clothing or a &otation jacket or suit. Ice creep-ers attached to boots will help to keep you stable on the ice and can assist in self-rescue.

· Bring safety items which may include: cell phone, whistle, rope, ice pick or awls, screw driv-er, hand &ares, &ashlight, throwable PFD. Plan ahead for a rescue.

· Check and double check the ice thickness with an ice spud, auger or cordless drill. If you dis-cover a weak spot, retrace your route o$ the ice. Keep a distance between others in your group.

· If you hear the ice crack or detect unsafe ice

you should stay spread out, immediately lie down (which will dis-tribute your weight) and crawl back to safer ice by the same way you came.

· If someone falls through the ice, do not run to the hole. First call 911 and get help on the way and then use a pole, branch, rope or any other handy object, which can be extended to the victim from a safe position. You cannot help if you also become a victim.

· If you fall through the ice, do not panic, because this will only hinder your self-rescue actions. Call out for help and kick your feet while getting your hands and then arms up onto safer ice. !is is when the ice awl or screwdriver will help you with your self-rescue. Continue to “swim” up onto the ice far enough to crawl or “roll-out” to safer ice.

· Snowmobiles, ORV’s and vehicles on the ice increase your risk of fall-ing through, especially at night. Many accidents occur when operators are driving at a high rate of speed (over driving) and are unable to slow or stop in time to avoid open wa-ter or unsafe ice.

· Pets that venture onto unsafe ice are another major cause for many

near drownings and deaths. If you "nd your pet has ventured out onto the ice, resist the urge to go out a%er them. Stay at a safe position on shore and persuade them back to safety.

· Wildlife that ventures onto unsafe ice is a natu-ral occurrence. Wildlife such as deer are strong swimmers prepared for cold weather and "nd their own way o$ the ice. Most o%en, wildlife dis-covered in the water are injured and succumb to injuries from predators or natural forces.

Oakland County of-fers many outdoor recre-ation opportunities with our lakes, ponds and riv-ers. However, before you step out onto the ice we strongly urge you to plan ahead and consider the risks involved. “When in doubt, don’t go out”.

If you would like more information on “Ice Safety” or any of our outdoor recreation safety classes please call us at (248) 858-5000 or visit us on our web site at www.OakandSheri$.com.

A 26-year-old White Lake Township man is fac-ing a felony charge a%er he allegedly pointed a loaded weapon at his sister following an argument on Dec. 30.

!e brother, Arthur Gailin, and his sister live to-gether in the home on Coastal Parkway, said White Lake Police Chief Edward Harris.

Galin was arraigned on Tuesday, Jan. 1 and his bond was set at $25,000. Harris said the weapon al-legedly used in the incident has been recovered.

No injuries were reported a%er a "re broke out in a Highland Township mobile home on the 200 block of Sutton on Dec. 26, 2012 around 6 p.m.

Highland Fire Department crews were dispatched to the scene. !e resident of the mobile home was able to evacuate without injury.

!e "re remains under investigation, according to the Oakland County Sheri$ ’s Department.

White Lake Township police arrested a 25-year-old Waterford Township man a%er determining the vehicle he was driving was reported stolen in Water-ford.

Police observed a suspicious 1996 black Cadillac in the parking lot of a gas station on Highland Road. A%er learning that the vehicle was stolen, police dis-covered the man also in possession of marijuana and synthetic narcotics, said White Lake Police Chief Ed-ward Harris.

A 2006 Volkswagen Passat owned by a person sus-pected of being involved in retail fraud was stolen from a White Lake Township towing company’s im-pound lot, according to law enforcement.

!e vehicle was reported stolen on Dec. 31, but the the% allegedly occurred between Dec. 24 and Dec. 28, White Lake Police Chief Edward Harris said.

Someone stole the Volkswagen from the lot by cut-ting the lock to the parking lot, Harris said.

Police suspect the Passat was used in the retail fraud crime.
