1(a) These things can be found in the household.(b) We get food scrapings after a meal. (c) The two reasons are it could have been pulled out by a

child playing with it and the toy could have been faulty.(d) (i) The main characteristic is that they are disposable

and unwanted things. (ii) Perhaps the persona feels unwanted too.

2(a) It would be gone as they are stored for too

long.

(b) We stick a piece of paper as a marker for ease of finding the end of the tape and to prevent the end from sticking to the tape.

(c) Liquid paper that is dry will dirty rather than erase the writing that is being cleaned. The liquid paper pen should be capped at all times when not in use.

(d) (i) They have become unusable because they were kept too long or not well taken care of.

(ii) Two steps are: use them often and don’t overbuy to store

3(a) The battery is flat.(b) It means to be without motion or power.(c) Pun (d) (i) The owner should send the car for servicing. (ii) The word is ‘maintenance’.

4(a) He feels this way possibly because like an overgrown

garden, he feels neglected.(b) It could have been kept in a shelf that is too far in

away from the general traffic or the title could sound uninteresting.

(c) They normally ignore the strays and consider them as nuisances.

(d) (i) Advice 1: I think I will tell the persona to have positive thoughts about himself.

(ii) Advice 2: He should not feel like useless or unloved.

5

(a) The metal ring can be recycled while the scrapings can be used to feed strays.

(b) The persona could be a teenager.(c) The persona has made extreme comparisons

which is not likely to happen within a family. As an orphan it is possible for the persona to feel unwanted, unloved and neglected.

(d) (i) The moral value I have learned is ‘We should have confidence in ourselves either within or without the home’

(ii) I would tell the person to go out and look around to understand society and know that one is the builder of one’s destiny.

2) News Break

1

1. The poet is Max Fatchen.

2. The title, News Break means reporting something that is unusual. The poet uses the title to indicate that the boy is doing something unusual – showing a change in his behaviour.

3. There are five stanzas and the rhyme scheme is ‘a, b, c, b’.

4. He offers to help her with some jobs.

5. His appearance surprises his mother because he looks clean and tidy.

6. He is compared to a lamb. He is so compared because he appears meek and docile not his usual boisterous self.

7. It means to be involved in an accident in a game that is the boy might have been hit on the head by a ball.

8. The reason the boy is not acting or looking his normal self and so the mother wonders if he is a stranger.

9. The reason is he has brought home his school report and it could be an unsatisfactory report. The mother looks at him closely and see the report in his hand.

10. It means to be prepared to make changes in the face of urgent needs. The boy displays an unusual good behaviour and appearance.

3. for goodness sake 8. stunned at sport

4. without a crease 9. reason

5. school books 10. school report

1

(a) They are at the front of the house.(b) The boy gives the mother a hug and a kiss lovingly.(c He has offered to help his mother with some little jobs.(d) (i) Reaction: The mother is very surprised. (ii) Textual evidence: The line, ‘For goodness sake,

(a) She says his face is clean for once.(b) He must have stayed quietly at school and did not run

or play very much.(c) Possibly after getting his school report which was not

very good, he had no appetite to eat. (d) (i) Reason: She says this because the boy is behaving

differently from his usual self. (ii) Opinion: I think it is not right because a child will

behave like a child that is behaving differently and unexpectedly every day.

3

(a) Normally they are thrown down to the floor.(b) He does not throw his books and he does not scream

and shout.(c) The literary device is simile.(d) (i) Example 1: The boy kicks up a fuss about having

too much work at school. (ii) Example 2: The boy cries that he is not going back

to school anymore.

4

(a) He did not throw tantrums or create a fuss.(b) It means he was hurt in some way or other. She says this

because she is totally unable to understand the change in the boy’s behaviour.

(c) She wants to have a better look to make sure he is her son.

(d) (i) Feeling: She must have felt relieved. (ii) Reason: She feels this way because this is what she

expects him to do – hoodwink her with his good behaviour for possibly a poor school report.

5

(a) The title News Break means something unusual just happened and it is relevant because the boy is showing unusual behaviour, out of the ordinary.

(b) It is hyperbole because it is an exaggeration of the mother’s feeling with regards to the reason for the change in his behaviour.

(c) He is not screaming or throwing a tantrum.(d) (i) Expectation: Yes and she expects her son to be noisy,

boisterous after coming home from school. (ii) Reason: It is normal for children to be loud and

noisy when they get home especially since they have been away from home for half a day.

2. The children ended up splashing water on each other and so did not wash the car properly and were not paid.

4

1. Mrs Green wants them to walk her dog.

2. I think this shows they are obedient children.

5

The story, Fair’s Fair is about three children, Raj, Sam and Lee who are excited about going to the fair in town. The three children are neighbours and are very close friends. Raj’s father has promised to take them to the fair. Sam has permission from her father to go to the fair but Lee’s mother does not allow it because she has no money for him. So, the three children go round to look for and do odd jobs to raise the money. But, they are not successful. Finally, Lee gets the money through his honesty in returning a purse found on the road.

6

The story, Fair’s Fair is about three children’s efforts to make money so that all three of them can go to the fair. While Sam and Raj have no problems, Lee does not have the money for the fair. The story has a few themes and one of the themes is resourcefulness in the face of difficulties. The three children as neighbours and good friends want to go to the fair together and when one of them may not be able to go due to lack of money, all three children show resourcefulness. They get together to find jobs to get the required money. They do two jobs, washing Sam’s father’s car and taking Mrs Green’s dog for a walk. Though they are not able to get the money from these two jobs, their efforts show resourcefulness in the face of difficulties.

to the fair. The fair is in town and Raj’s father has promised to take all three of them. But Lee does not have the money for the fair. Raj and Sam get together with Lee to think of ways to get the money. They approach their parents and neighbours about doing odd jobs. They manage to get two jobs but they still could not get the money for Lee. When Lee finds some money, Lee returns the money to the owner and is given a reward. From this, the moral lesson I have learned is that honesty is the best policy.

Graphic Novel: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

1 The Search Expedition

1 1. The main characters in the story were

Professor Aronnax, Captain Nemo, Ned Land and Conseil.

2. Professor Aronnax had the expertise on undersea life. 3. A narwhal is a type of whale (which has a long tooth

like a tusk: for the male). 4. The mysterious events started in July, 1866. 5. The unidentified object was first sighted off the coast of

Australia. 6. The mission of the warship, Abraham Lincoln

was to track down and kill the sea monster. 7. The ‘creature’ being hunted was enormous,

hundreds of feet long and moved at unbelievable speed. / It had a shiny black body shaped like a fish of about two hundred and fifty feet long.

8. The attack from the sea monster caused the crash of the warship.

Professor Aronnax

involving the ‘sea cerature’.

They sailed to Atlantic ocean. Ned

4 1. The content of the letter brought in by Conseil was

an invitation from the United States government for Professor Aronnax. He was asked to join the U.S. army in the hunting trip to track and kill the sea monster which had been attacking ships and steamers for many months.

2. A narwhal or a whale is a mammal living in the sea. There are many types of whales. One of them is said to be the largest animal. A narwhal is a type of medium-sized whale. The male has a long tooth that looks like a tusk which can be very strong.

3. I think Professor Aronnax took the offer by the United States government because he was curious. He wanted to know about the strange ‘creature’ that he was analysing. He wondered about it as the different incidents happened at different parts of the world within short intervals. Although he was considered an expert on undersea life, he was unable to find answers to the mystery. In addition, I think he was also adventurous and would not miss the chance given by the United States government in tracking the creature.

Understanding New Lit Form1 Answers

5. After it was over, Professor Aronnax found the trip a strange one.

3The diving suits created by Captain Nemo for the underwater trip was different from the usual diving suits mentioned by Professor Aronnax. His diving suit had a special air tank, which was strapped to the diver’s back. The air tank enabled the diver to walk for about nine to ten hours underwater.

4 The underwater hunting trip was my first experience. I considered myself an expert on undersea life and I was thrilled about it. This was my chance to see real sea creatures that I had written in my book; “Mysteries of the Ocean Depths”. I was going to learn new things here. The first surprise was the diving suits developed by Captain Nemo. He was really a genius when he showed me the electric lamps and the air gun using glass bullets.

I was really amazed wandering around the marvelious sea garden. There were so many marine species. I had never seen them moving before my eyes. We had to walk for more than an hour before we reached the Forest of Crespo Island. The trees were also different from those on land. We walked deep into the forest. I did not see any animals but Captain Nemo was very alert. He shot dead an otter which was quite a distance from us. Captain Nemo must have gone hunting in the forest before this trip.

It was really an unforgettable experience for me and Conseil. Ned had missed the great opportunity to see the remarkable place. It was a strange trip but it was quite fun and interesting to see those new things.

3 The Island of New Guinea was just (1) two miles away from the Nautilus and Ned thought it was an opportunity for them to (2) escape from the ship. However, Professor Aronnax did not favour the idea because the people living on the island were (3) cannibals. Ned insisted on going there so he could (4) hunt for animals because he was bored with eating fish. They enjoyed their (5) freedom on the island and Ned killed a wild boar. They prepared it for (6) roasting and when it was cooked, they sat to (7) eat their feast. Suddenly, they realised that the natives (8) started to attack them using arrows. They had no choice but to (9) leave and run to their boat to save their (10) lives.

4

(Accept any suitable answers) Captain Nemo easily granted the permission for the professor and his companions to go ashore. I think he wanted them to experience being attacked by the natives of the island. It was because like the professor, he knew the people living on the island were cannibals. The natives would not be friendly to strangers or new people as they would become their victims. In a way, Captain Nemo could be quite heartless as he did not care what would happen to the professor and his companions if they were attacked and could not save themselves. He could not be blamed for what had happened because they knew about the cannibals and yet, they insisted on going there. On the other hand, I also think that Captain Nemo understood the feeling of the three people as they had not been on land for some time. They were not like him or his crew members who could make the Nautilus as home. The land was just a very short distance and he thought they would have no problem to run away.

2

1. The Nautilus got stuck when it hit the rocks when the ship entered the Torres Strait. Captain Nemo calmly explained the situation to the Professor, Ned and Conseil. However, they had to wait for full moon when the high tide could help the Nautilus to be free from the rocks.

2. The Nautilus was able to continue on its journey after five days trapped near the Island of New Guinea.

3. Captain Nemo used a telescope to look at the horizon. Professor Aronnax was being friendly by asking him questions.

4. These three people were locked for the second time. They did not know the reason but they could not do anything about it. They ate their lunch and fell asleep.

5. The professor woke up to see Captain Nemo standing by the side. He had no idea what had happened to him because the last thing he remembered was having lunch in the cell.

3

(Accept any suitable answer) I think Captain Nemo was involved in helping people to fight against the government of a country. He had friends on land in certain parts of the country. He gave them money or gold to support the people. To support fights or war could be a cruel act. Therefore, he did not want Professor Aronnax and his companions to know about his activities. They might wonder what and why, but to let them see or tell them about it would not be possible. Even with a badly injured man that he had taken on board, he still refused to let them know what had happened and the reason for such serious injury.

5. Ned was also aware about the journey after they left Ceylon as the ship was heading to the Red Sea which was a dead end.

4 In the novel ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’, Captain Nemo could be considered as an antagonist, (1) a person who actively opposed to or was hostile to someone or something. This was because he was the person behind the mysterious attacks (2) on ships and steamers at sea which caused worries to people in early 1867. His scientific knowledge enabled him to build the Nautilus, a (3) ship that could move underwater. He held Professor Aronnax, his servant, Conseil and Ned Land as ‘prisoners’ (4) who were free to move on board the ship but would never be allowed to go home.

By doing so, Captain Nemo thought that he was still human because he did not kill them for attacking and intruding into his territory. He did not have any intention of having the three men to go home because he did not want (5) his secret and the Nautilus to be known by those living on land.

1. The novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne is about an underwater ship called the Nautilus. It took Professor Aronnax and his two companions to experience the world below the surface of the sea.

I love to see fish swimming in water. Therefore the event that I wish to experience is to walk on the ocean floor. I can imagine being surrounded by all the different kinds of fish. I would also like to see the various types of corals and also the marine life with my own eyes. The underwater world must be very beautiful and interesting. So far, I have only watched the beautiful and colourful underwater world on television. Professor Aronnax must have felt the excitement and thrilling moments when he walked underwater. He described the plants in the Forest of Crespo Island and the magnificent otter shot. He was attracted to the sea garden and the many varieties of marine species. He also mentioned about the magnificent coral kingdom when they had to attend the funeral of one injured man. However, I would not like to meet a shark!

I think there are many secrets of the underwater world that people need to see. Now, it is not so difficult to see marine life. People can go snorkelling and diving at certain places around the world. One of them is in Pulau Sipadan in Sabah. I hope I can go there one day.

2. There are several characters in the novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. One of the characters was Ned Land. He was a skilled harpooner.

One of the brave acts was to kill the shark which was going to attack Captain Nemo. If he did not react quickly, Captain Nemo could be the second victim attacked by the shark. The first victim was the East Indian pearl diver.

Ned was angry at being locked up without given any explanation. He also made plans to escape. I think another brave act was him attacking the steward. He did not care what would happen to him. In doing so, he successfully attracted the attention of the captain of the ship. Only then he gave them some explanations.

Ned did not like to be confined in a place. He never stopped thinking of escaping. He wanted to escape whenever they were near land. For example, when they were stuck near the Island of New Guinea and when they were twelve miles from the coast of Spain. Making plans to escape was brave as they did not know what would happen to them whether they would succeed or not.

Therefore, I think Ned was a brave person. That was the reason he was able to do all the brave acts in the novel.

3. The novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is an interesting, underwater adventure story.

There are many lessons which we can learn from the story. First, we learn about adapting ourselves in new places and cooperate with people around us. In the novel, Professor Aronnax, Conseil and Ned Land had to adapt themselves to live in a ship. They had to cooperate with the new people around them if they wished to live. Even though Captain Nemo could be an annoying person, they had no choice but to listen to him and follow his commands. Ned showed a bit of temper when he attacked a steward, but later he just followed what he was supposed to do.

Another lesson is to be kind and generous. Captain Nemo was rich so he could afford to help the East Indian diver by giving him pearls. He also gave gold bars to the people in the Island of Crete. There are rich men who will not help others at all. So here Captain Nemo portrayed kind and generous acts.

The third lesson I learn is to be calm and patient. Captain Nemo faced all problems well without any worries unlike Professor Aronnax. I think the reason was because he had all the knowledge in his field and was able to act accordingly. He knew about the full moon and high tide so the Nautilus could be free from the rocks. He knew about the secret passage below Suez so he did not have to go the long way to reach Mediterranean. He also patiently handled the situation when they were trapped in the iceberg for three days.

The novel provides many other lessons but the above are among what I have learned from the novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It is an interesting, underwater adventure story.

4. The novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne is an interesting read which is about all the different events happening underwater.

One of the interesting events is when they were at the pearl bed. Many incidents happened during their trip. They were able to collect as many oysters as possible in the hope that the oysters contained pearls. Before the trip, Captain Nemo had warned the professor about sharks. Although he was terrified of them, he did not want to miss the opportunity to find treasures. They saw an East Indian diver being attacked by a shark. Ned killed the shark when it looked like the shark was going to attack Captain Nemo. Then they took the unconscious diver back to his boat. Captain Nemo also gave a bag of pearls to the diver.

I like this event because I can learn many things.

Understanding New Lit Form 1 Answers

I have to be good at whatever I do so I can face any problem. Ned was skilled in using a harpoon so he could kill the shark in one attempt. I also learn to be helpful. The captain helped the pearl diver twice. First, he distracted the shark from continuing its attack to the diver. Then, he gave him a bag of pearls as he knew the diver might not be able to get any pearls for quite some time. In addition, I like this event because I like pearls. I myself will not miss the opportunity to find my own pearls if I have the opportunity!

Other than the above reasons, this event also gives the chance for a person to see a shark swimming before the eyes. It is frightening but it is an experience that many people will not get to feel the thrill. It is another part of the story of the underwater world that Professor Aronnax had gone through. That is why I like the event which I think is very unusual for many people.

5. The characters that I can compare in the novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea are Professor Aronnax and Captain Nemo. The professor was the protagonist or the “hero” of the story. Captain Nemo was the antagonist or the person who we can say did bad things in the story.

Captain Nemo had both good and bad character traits. He was inhuman and cruel when he attacked ships and steamers at sea. He might have his own reasons which were unknown to us. I think he was also arrogant. He would do what he wanted without thinking about how other people felt about it. However, he also had good traits which were kind and generous. He helped people whether they were close to him or unknown to him. For example, he helped the diver. He was also calm and patient in all situations.

Professor Aronnax might not have negative traits but he tended to follow instructions. Also, he always cooperated with Captain Nemo. He might not want to cause trouble between him and the Captain. Sometimes

he could be very impatient in wanting to get out of a problem. He also worried about things. One good trait of the professor was he always thought about others. He thought that the treasure from the sunken ships should belong to other rightful owners, not Captain Nemo. After he escaped from the Nautilus, he still hoped that Captain Nemo would change his ways.

The two characters were very knowledgeable in their own fields such as about marine life and the underwater world. In a way, the similarities and differences between the two did not bring any conflict in the story. In fact, they went along well throughout the story except when Captain Nemo was a bit hostile when he did not want to explain about his secret activities.

6. In the novel, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, there were a few frightening events which were after the crash of the warship, Abraham Lincoln, the maelstrom and the encounter with the shark.

I think another frightening event was when Professor Aronnax and his two companions were attacked by the savages. They were on the Island of New Guinea which they knew the natives were cannibals. They were enjoying themselves because they had the freedom to walk on land. Unfortunately, they forgot about the cannibals. When they roasted the boar that Ned had killed, the natives must have smelled it and quietly prepared to attack. The three had no choice but to run for their lives. They were lucky enough that they had their boat and the Nautilus was not far. It was bad to have to stay in the Nautilus, but they still want to live. They did not want to be the victims of the cannibals,

Being attacked by cannibals is something that nobody wants to experience. Imagine them eating bodies of other human beings. Of course it is a frightening and terrifying event!
