Unit Learning Objectives:
To understand the mechanical aspects of long-term preparation
To be able to discuss refinement of technique, the perfect model, and use of feedback for example through video and computer software
To know about ergogenic aids, including pedometry, heart rate monitoring and the use of GPS technology
![Page 3: A2 - Long Term Technical Prep](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062513/5565277cd8b42a47678b504f/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Lesson Objectives
To develop an understanding of ergogenic aids, including:Force PlatesPedometryHeart rate monitoringThe use of GPS technology
To be able to calculate the basal metabolic rate and calorific expenditure
![Page 4: A2 - Long Term Technical Prep](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062513/5565277cd8b42a47678b504f/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Force Plates
Watch the video and make relevant notes on the use of Force Plate technology.
Apply it!
How would this benefit you in your sport?
Harley – This might interest you!

Pedometry
A device that calculates the distance you have walked or run
It senses your movement and counts the amount of steps you take
Why might this be useful?
![Page 6: A2 - Long Term Technical Prep](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062513/5565277cd8b42a47678b504f/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Apply It!
You firstly need to work out your Basal Metabolic Rate
E.G. Wrighty’s BMR isBMR = 1 X Weight (KG) X 24 hrsWrighty’s BMR = 1 X 95 X 24
BMR = 2280
![Page 7: A2 - Long Term Technical Prep](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062513/5565277cd8b42a47678b504f/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Now calculate my calorific expenditure:I went for a 1KM swim this morning at 6am.
Level of Intensity Type of Activity Activity factor (x BMR)
Very Light Seated /standing activities
Men = 1.3Women = 1.3
Light Walking 2.5 – 3mph Men = 1.6Women = 1.5
Moderate Walking 3.5 – 4mph Men = 1.7Women = 1.6
Heavy Jogging Men = 2.1Women 1.9
Exceptional Athletic training Men = 2.4Women = 2.2
BMR x Activity Factor = Calorific Expenditure
![Page 8: A2 - Long Term Technical Prep](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062513/5565277cd8b42a47678b504f/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Now apply it at home!
Using the information in the presentation and the Pedometer, calculate your own calorific intake.
Firstly you will need to work out your average speed (distance x time)
So you will need to measure the following:your stride lengthHow many steps you take (pedometer)How long you are working for

NIKE + An advanced form of pedometry
![Page 10: A2 - Long Term Technical Prep](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062513/5565277cd8b42a47678b504f/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Heart Rate Monitors
What do we know?Accessible to most
athletesPopular method of
measuring exercise intensity
Sensors worn on the chest sending data to a wrist watch to display working heart rate
![Page 11: A2 - Long Term Technical Prep](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062513/5565277cd8b42a47678b504f/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Remember how to work out your maximum HR?
Remember how to use this to work out training zones?
![Page 12: A2 - Long Term Technical Prep](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062513/5565277cd8b42a47678b504f/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Heart Rate Task
Heart rate monitors allow athletes to predetermine what training zones they should be working in
They can also give a good indication of fitness levels and recovery

GPS Technology
Global positioning system
A navigation system that tracks your location and can measure distance travelled, average and maximum speeds, stride length and pulse rate
What sports would this be useful in?

Exam Question:
Identify examples of the types of technology used by elite athletes in order to monitor their intensity. Select one example, and highlight any advantages or potential disadvantages for the athlete as a result of this type of technology
