Airbus A380 Technical Training Manual (TTM)Full DocumentNew VersionThe first A380 technical manual, the "Airplane Characteristics for Airport Planning," was released this month. It can be consulted and/or downloaded from the A380 Family page on Airbus' web site at www.airbus.com. This is the first time a technical manual of this nature has been made available so early, some three years before the first flight of the aircraft.The Airplane Characteristics manual provides specific A380 data needed by airport authorities and planners to support the operation of the A380 within their airports. Data such as airplane dimensions, take off and landing distances, terminal operations data, taxiing, parking and pavement loading requirements are provided for the A380-800 and A380-800F, the passenger and freighter versions of the A380.Airbus has been working with planning teams from 50 major airports in five continents to ensure smooth handling of the A380 when it enters service in 2006 and the Airplane Characteristics manual is a major support for this.Following release of this first manual and up to entry into service of the A380, Airbus will deliver a full range of technical data for the maintenance, engineering, material support and flight operations departments of A380 airline customers. Technical data for the A380 will be available in electronic format according to the most recent aviation industry standards, which are more efficient and user friendly. They will be accessible through Airbus On Line Services, the Airbus portal for Customer Support.TRANSCRIPT

The avionics equipment is installed in two compartments:- The main avionics compartment located in the forward section of thefuselage, below the cockpit and the flight crew rest area,- The upper avionics compartment located behind the crew rest area, atthe level of the upper deck.The main avionics compartment contains the normal electrical powercenter and most of the systems computers; it is accessible:- From the cockpit, through a hatch.The upper avionics compartment contains the emergency electrical powercenter, some ultimate emergency equipment and most of the In-FlightEntertainment (IFE) equipment; it is accessible through a door, from theupper deck cabin.

CARGO COMPARTMENTS PRESENTATIONGeneral
The aircraft has three lower deck cargo compartments in the lower partof the fuselage. They are:- The forward cargo compartment,- The aft cargo compartment,- The bulk cargo compartment.The forward and aft cargo compartments are equipped with anindependent operated semi-automatic Cargo Loading System (CLS) andcan accommodate cargo in containers or on pallets.The bulk cargo compartment is designed for transportation of bulk cargo,passenger luggage and live animals.Access to the forward, aft and bulk cargo compartments is gained throughdoors located on the right hand side of the fuselage.Two hydraulically operated outwards opening doors give access to theforward and aft cargo compartments.The bulk cargo has one manually operated door, which opens inwards.The three compartments have bilge drains.

The inside of the cargo compartments has:- Floor panels,- Ceiling panels,- Side linings,- Partition walls.All the linings and panels are sealed to give a fully sealed compartmentfor fire containment and extinguishing.Rapid decompression panels are installed flush in the sidewall linings toprevent damage from differential pressure.In case of decompression in the cabin or in the cargo compartment, theyequalize the pressure in both sections, to avoid damage to the structure.Access panels are installed for the maintenance of components locatedbehind the linings.The bulk cargo compartment has nets to separate the bulk and the aftcompartments.

The standard configuration embodies a "block" arrangement of Unit LoadDevices (ULDs) providing for 20 x LD3 containers or a combination of7 x 88" or 96" x 125" pallets in the FWD Cargo Compartment, and 16 xLD3 containers or a combination of 6 x LD3 containers and 3 x 88" or96" x 125" pallets in the AFT Cargo Compartment.As an option, a Pallet Turning Unit capability can be installed. 3 additional88" or 96" x 125" pallets can then be arranged lengthwise in the tunnelarea of the AFT cargo compartment, in lieu of the 6 LD3 containers.The bulk cargo compartment can only be loaded with bulk and loosebaggage.The usable volume of the bulk cargo compartment is 14.3 m3 (505 ft3)and the maximum load capacity is about 2541 kg (5602 lb).A divider net separates the bulk cargo compartment from the aft cargocompartment.

CARGO LOADING SYSTEM PRESENTATIONCargo Loading System
One person, through inside and outside control panels can operate theCLS. The semi-automatic cargo loading systems of the forward and theaft lower deck cargo compartments are similar in construction and workindependently.The CLS has:- Inside and outside control panels,- A power switch,- A compartment Control Box (CCB),- Sector Control Boxes (SCB),- Power Drive Units (PDUs),- Proximity switches located on different latches,- Mechanical components as: latches, guides, rollers, ball units.The CLS works only if the power switch is set to ON, the aircraft poweris available and the manual door sill latches are down.The control panels send electrical signals through the CCB and SCB tothe applicable PDU.The PDUs move the Unit Load Devices (ULDs) in the necessary directionand to their loading position. When the ULD is in the correct loadingposition, you must lock the latch manually. The locked latches electricallyisolate the related PDU.The CLS is connected to the aircraft Onboard Maintenance System (OMS)to report system/component failures.If there is no electrical power available, it is possible to load or unloadthe cargo compartments manually.
