midsummer magic Years 5 - 6Friday 10 – Sunday 12 June 2016

Evil fairies, duels, monsters and hilarious misunderstandings… A Midsummer Night’s Dream has it all. And, as one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays, it’s a perfect introduction to the playwright.

We’ll use drama and storytelling to sink our teeth into Shakespeare’s play, and get our heads round that Elizabethan English! Using the woods and mazes of Kilve, we’ll get a sense of how it feels to be lost in the enchanted forest when dark forces lurk around every corner. We’ll explore the myths at the heart of Shakespeare’s words, then, using the bard’s eerie tale as as inspiration, we’ll write our own mysterious midsummer stories, poetry or plays.

This course is a great opportunity for children to read and understand classic English literature, and prepare themselves for the increasing demands of secondary school English. It is also a great opportunity to meet new people who like to think a bit differently, and to explore and extend their ideas in a supportive environment.

Course Director: Helen Harvey is a teacher and children’s poet whose first collection Dog at the End of the World was published by March Hamilton Media in September 2012. She studied English at Oxford University and has been teaching English and creative writing ever since. Her poems and short stories have won prizes and are published in several journals and anthologies.

The cost of this course is £156.This course requires a minimum number of applicants.
