Two years ago their daughter, Anna, served as the ambassador for the March of Dimes raising money and awareness for the foundation. Today, the Evans still trot along the philanthropic road as they organize a fish fry selling plates with all proceeds donated to the March of Dimes. Six members enjoyed the caramel-pecan pie and coffee served by the hostess. Yearbooks were distributed. Mrs. Kathryn Dixon, chaplain, gave the devotion. Mrs. Dixon led the ritual and the pledge to the flags. Mrs. Mary Ann Shaw, pres- ident, gave the program on the diary of William R. Dyer of Eagleville. Dyer, a member of General Forrest’s escort, began the diary in January 1863 and ended in August 1864. Wayne Bradshaw of Mon- teagle decided to edit and pub- lish the diary. The front part of the book is unedited; the latter part is edited by Bradshaw. The diary was published in 2009. Dyer wrote brief ac- counts of food, the weather, boredom, and terror. For- rest’s cavalry passed through Jackson, crossed the Hatchie River Bridge at Estanaula, and camped outside Brownsville on April 11, 1864. The October meeting will be at Mrs. Helen Jane Shaw’s home. It’s Scarecrow Time! Well friends, it’s time for local businesses, agen- cies, and organizations to cover our historic court- house with scarecrows for the annual “Hatchie Fall Festival Scarecrow Contest.” This event sponsored by the Haywood Master Gardeners, have evolved into a big time major affair. I cannot tell you how many people call this office expressing how “neat” and “cool” it is when they pass by the courthouse. Many of these people are tourist. The rules for the contest are as follow: • Scarecrows can be constructed of any non-haz- ardous material: straw, metal, cloth, etc. • No scarecrow may depict a real person. All scare- crows must be in good taste or will be removed. • Entry Forms may be picked up at the Haywood County Extension Office, 100 S. Wilson; Chamber of Commerce, 121 West Main St.; West TN Delta Heri- tage Center, 121 Sunny Hill Cove; or online: www. hatchiefallfest.com • Entry Forms must be returned to the Extension Office, 100 S. Wilson by Monday, October 4, 2010. • Scarecrows must be set-up on the courthouse lawn by Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 5 p.m., and will remain there until after the Hatchie Fall Fest on Oc- tober 16, 2010. • Judging will begin at 5 p.m., Saturday, October 9. Ribbons indicating place will be attached to winning scarecrows and announcement made immediately following judging. • Scarecrows may be removed after Saturday, October 16. But can remain on the courthouse lawn until Saturday, October 23. All scarecrows must be removed by Saturday, October 23. • There are two (2) categories for competition: I. Adults (Industry, Business, Club, Group or In- dividual) II. Children (School, Club, Group or Individual) Additional prizes will be awarded for: • Most Creative (all entries are eligible for this prize) • People’s Choice (all entries are eligible, winner will be chosen by festival goers, October 16, by cast ballot.) The prize money for the contest is first place ($100), second place ($75), and third place ($50). Gift Prizes for Most Creative & People’s Choice will be announced the day of festival. President Lynn J. Shaw called the meeting to order. Shaw mentioned the new exhibit in the Museum is five Confederate ships; at least three were made by the late Gene Griffin. All the ships are scale models. Larry Douglas was at the meeting to report on the weekend of Sept. 17 and 18 for the Cruisin’ and Tennessee Trash restored hot rods show on the lawn. Under new business, the Class of 1969 gave a memorial for Steve Stoots, an outstanding football hero for HHS. Mrs. Becky Thornton spoke about the old Zion Episcopal Church cemetery on the Hathcock property that needs to be restored. The stones are in a state of upheaval and disrepair. Some of the names on the stones are Haywood, Bond, Chilton and Johnson. Ray Dixon gave as the program a short history of the Brownsville Baptist Church using a power-point presentation showing pictures of some of the earliest ministers and buildings. The meeting was then adjourned. The next meeting will be at Union Grove United Methodist Church Nov. 14 at 3 p.m.

The Joe Wheeler Chapter UDC September meeting
