By a unanimous vote, additional funds will be provided for dog catch- ing personnel and mech- anism will be formulated to work with the Health Department. In other recent action, Norris Bernard of the Fire Department was promoted to lieuten- ant and a contract was awarded to Brownsville Concrete Co. for six months for concrete to be used by the city at a price of $40.50 per yard. Local group buys sta- tion Financial negotiations were completed this week with B & P Prop- erties being purchased by Brownsville Wireless Corp. The group pur- chased the local radio station, WBHT and WT- BG-FM. The B & P firm with Bill Pope as president sold out to the new firm, which lists J. Lyle Reid, James T. Haynes Jr. and Carlton Veirs as owners. Negotiations have been in progress for sometime but FCC approved the sale only last week. Mr. Veirs has been station manager since June, 1978 and will continue in this capacity. Local beauty crowned queen at Strawberry Festival Sally Simmons was crowned Queen at the West Tennessee Straw- berry Festival in Hum- boldt. May 17, 1990 Hardin named 1990 most outstanding advo- cate for children Haywood County Mul- tihandicapped Center teacher Sandy Hardin was named the South- west Tennessee Most Outstanding Advocate For Children last Thurs- day at a ceremony in Jackson. The Southwest Tennessee Council on Children and Youth gave the award. Hardin, who has been teaching the class for multiple handicapped children since its begin- ning six years ago, was chosen for the award from a field of nominees across West Tennessee. Judy Renshaw, district coordinator of the South- west Council on Chil- dren and Youth, said the selection had been dif- ficult for the committee but that Mrs. Hardin was chosen because her level of advocacy of students set her apart. Sheriff says thefts tied to Fayette Juveniles No one had been arrest- ed late Tuesday when Sheriff Raymond Russell said he believes several juveniles are responsible for at least six car thefts in the southern part of Haywood County. The sheriff said another auto theft, from a Brownsville used car lot, may also be linked to the youths. The car thefts began in early March and contin- ued until last Thursday when a Stanton deputy made a routine traffic stop that may end the in- vestigation. Deputy Melvin Bond Jr. stopped a car late Thurs- day night whose occu- pants may be linked to the stolen near the time Bonds stopped the car, the sheriff would not elaborate on the investi- gation. Criminal investigators from the sheriff’s depart- ment have spent several days since last Thursday working with Fayette County deputies ques- tioning high school stu- dents there.
