Writing– A814

OCR has produced these commentaries on candidate responses to support teachers in interpreting the assessment criteria for the current GCSE specifications. This content has been produced by senior OCR examiners, with the support of the Qualifications Manager, to illustrate how the questions might be answered and provide some commentary on what factors contribute to an overall grading. The candidate material in this booklet has been taken from the June 2010 exam series. Script 1 Title: Transport in my local area Purpose: An Article for a local newspaper in Gujarat Communication This piece is relevant and generally understandable. However, poor handwriting seems to impair communication especially in the beginning as unknown place names are involved. The candidate tries to express a simple opinion ‘મને તકલીફ થાય છે’ with rather a pointless contrast of good gardens in Bhuj. It appears that the two ideas are not related in any way at all. However, an idea about the difficulty of travelling on the train has been expressed which could have been developed further. The candidate expresses simple opinions about the journey being boring and hot and justifies the need for air condition on the train. This definitely pulls it up to 3-4 mark band. In the last paragraph the candidate irrelevantly concludes that his parents get bored because he does not always come home. Again this could have been developed further by giving reasons focussing on transport. Unfortunately this whole piece is limited to his journey to work. The piece is too short, and with all the points repeated, actually there is very little communication about transport in his local area. The candidate could have used some of the other bullet points to expand his response. For example, he could have used short factual information to describe another journey and given some opinions about transport in the local area or changes he would like to make giving reasons. This would have raised his marks considerably to match the Quality of Language. The marks are awarded on a best fit principle using the descriptions in the marking grid. Although elements of this work could be described as ‘irrelevant or repetitive’ (band 1-2) the candidate manages to produce enough factual information to lift it into the higher band and the presence of 2 opinions and a justification pushes it to the top of this band. Mark: 4 Quality of Language There is a range of mostly straightforward structures and vocabulary. The candidate has demonstrated the knowledge of being able to connect verbs though with some errors. There are quite a few spelling errors but the response is sufficiently accurate for the basis of the message to be clear and reasonably coherent. The candidate seems quite fluent. But looking more closely at the piece, the candidate has used different tenses and time frames using compound verbs. For example, ‘રહતેો હતો’ (past continuous), ‘લેવી પડે’, (obligatory to take)

‘રહવે ુ ંપડે’ (obligatory to stay), ‘નથી’ (negative verb), ‘જાવાની આવે’ (a compound verb). The candidate has also attempted to use a couple of clauses using conjunctions ‘but’ and ‘because’. However, when using ‘but’ the second part of the sentence does not relate to the first part and therefore there is some ambiguity. Overall, the candidate has demonstrated a good range of verbal constructions and at least one clause used correctly which pushes the quality mark in the band 8/9. Mark: 8

Total marks: 12/25

Script 2 Title: My School Purpose: A letter to a new student from Gujarat who is moving to England Communication This piece of writing is short and the unclear handwriting and poor spelling disrupt communication. It displays some very basic short pieces of information in response to the task with no expansion on any of the points. There seems to be no opinions, viewpoints and justifications expressed except when describing the school where descriptive words મોટી અને સુદંર (big and beautiful) have been used. These perhaps could be considered as basic opinions. However, the candidate has tried to make a comparison between the schools in India and London with a couple of simple facts thus enhancing the response to push it into the 3-4 mark band. The candidate could have taken an opportunity to express some viewpoints and develop them to gain more marks. For example, when describing the school day he could have said what part of the day he found interesting and why. Similarly there was plenty of scope on points 3, 4 and 5 to give simple facts and viewpoints and develop them with justifications which could have helped him to gain more marks. The candidate produces enough information to respond to the task and the attempt at comparison lifts the response to mark band 3-4. Mark: 4 Quality of Language Linguistically this piece of writing demonstrates straightforward vocabulary and structures. There are too many errors demonstrating inconsistency and in the short piece of writing only limited language can be seen. There is one verbal tense with an error (તમે આવ તય) and a couple of clause types again with errors. The sentence at the end of the first paragraph could have been a good clause type but there are errors in the word order making the sentence inaccurate. The candidate demonstrates the use of different time frames. Therefore the piece falls into the band 6-7 for quality. As there are errors of case endings and some verbs not expressed correctly, a lower mark of 6 is appropriate. Mark: 6

Total marks: 10/25

Script 3 Title: Travel and the wider world Purpose: A letter to a friend about staying with a Family in Gujarat Communication This piece has straightforward descriptions of factual information and produces enough language to respond to the task. There is some confusion in the first paragraph due to the absence of punctuation when using direct speech whilst using some features of indirect speech. Therefore it is unclear to whom the candidate is referring. The candidate expresses opinions and simple points of view and sometimes provides justifications. This candidate could have improved this answer by expanding on the points of view to give more opinions and justifications. Some reference to Gujarat and family life there would have enhanced the basic holiday information given here and boosted the mark higher in the band. This work falls into the 5/6 mark band overall but because the message was unclear in the first paragraph the lower mark is most appropriate. Mark: 5 Quality of Language The candidate seems to have some awareness of verbs and time frames but the writing is inconsistent overall. There is no difference shown between simple present and continuous present and therefore it is difficult to understand what is happening when. The two attempts at past tenses have mistakes in them as ‘ખરીદંુ’ instead of ‘ખરી ુ’ં could be interpreted as simple present tense.

There is one complex tense, ‘કહવે ુ ંહત ુ’ં and one conditional which is unfortunately mixed up with incorrect direct speech. Vocabulary and structures are generally straightforward and messages are sufficiently accurate to be comprehensible. On balance a mark of 6 was awarded to take into account general mistakes in spelling and grammar. Mark: 6

Total marks: 11/25

Script 4 Title: Education and work Purpose: A letter to a new student Communication On the whole the information in this piece is clear and relevant with detailed responses to the task. It expresses more than straightforward ideas and point of view and two justifications. The candidate could have used a greater variety of justifications to enhance the writing. The candidate has taken three of the bullet point suggestions and the ideas produced flow from one to the next and link together very well. However, repetitions of certain phrases and vocabulary restrict the development of further ideas. The opening paragraphs which explain why the letter has been written and how the school welcomes the new pupils are good and well written. However the longer third paragraph could have benefitted from being split into 2 or 3 shorter paragraphs to aid communication. Likewise repetition in the forth paragraph makes it feel as through the candidate is running out of steam as the work trails off. This response overall was considered to be relevant and the ideas and opinions used were more than routine and were justified but the piece could have benefitted from more justifications and a lack of repetition. On balance this response falls into the 7-8 mark band but was awarded a mark of 7 to take into account the repeated phrases used for justifications. Mark: 7 Quality of Language This candidate uses a good range of structures and vocabulary and there is an attempt at varying clause types and conjunctions. When attempted the use of tenses is consistently accurate. The writing is mostly unambiguous with fluent flow of language and the candidate seems to be comfortable with his use of language. However, there are some repetitions of vocabulary items ‘મજા’, ‘પસદં’, ’બહજુ’, ‘સારંુ’, and spelling errors in basic words ‘શાળા’ (school), ‘આપણે’ (we), ‘કરીએ’

(do), ‘િવષયો’ (subjects), ‘િદવસ’ (day). Similarly there are some inaccuracies in structures. The use of language pulls this work into the 10-11 mark band but the inaccuracy means that the lower mark is more appropriate. Mark: 10

Total marks: 17/25
