Toyota's Contribution Towards Sustainable Development
In 1992 Toyota established its Guiding Principles in direct response to
the international initiatives agreed to at the Earth Summit in Rio,
providing Toyota with a clear path towards achieving sustainable
development.
As the world's second-largest car manufacturer, Toyota is committed
to tackling environmental issues.
Their approach is both long-term and holistic. The total life cycle of
the product, from design and use of materials to end-of-life recycling,
is examined for environmental impact - as seen in this report - as are
socio-economic aspects, such as the health and safety of their
employees, and the communities in which Toyota operates.

Toyota's Contribution Towards Sustainable Development
Toyota Motor Europe (TME) has created the 'Toyota Motor
Europe Green Purchasing Guidelines for its suppliers to work in
accordance with Toyota's environmental activities.
Being at the forefront of environmental developments in business, all of Toyota plants are ISO 14001 certified.

Robust Production Policies
Toyota Product System relies on two basic concepts:
1. Just-in-time
In this each process produces only what is needed by the next process
in a continuous flow.
2. Jidoka
It means that when a problem occurs, the equipment stops
immediately, preventing defective products from being produced.
By manufacturing products only as they are needed, and by keeping a
tight control of quality, the Toyota Production System prevents waste
and therefore reduces the amount of energy, raw materials and other
resources used, making it a powerful asset in Toyotas approach
towards sustainability.

ZERO EMISSIONS
For Toyota, minimizing the impact cars have on environment is a
top priority.
Their aim is not only to reduce emissions from vehicles, but tomake the entire life-cycle of a car more environmentally friendly.
Toyota has been taking a leading role in developing advanced
environmental technology.
This technology can help save costs through lower fuel
consumption and make a clear statement towards environmental
protection.

GREEN TECHNOLOGIES
As part of its long-term commitment to the environment, Toyota is
investing heavily in green technologies such as cleaner diesel engines,
hybrid power trains and alternative fuels.
In 2003, Toyota revolutionized the diesel engine by developing
integrated solution called TOYOTA DIESEL CLEAN ADVANCED
TECHNOLOGY(Toyota D-CAT). This advanced concept dramatically
reduces particulate matter and nitrogen oxides, resulting in the
worlds cleanest diesel engine technology.

ALTERNATIVE FUELS
In 2002, Toyota was the worlds first automobile manufacturer to
commercialize FUEL CELL HYBRID VEHICLES.
Fuel Cell, combines hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity
that powers an electric motor. The only by-products are water vapor
and heat, making this technology the ultimate zero-emission
solution.
Toyota also supports the use of alternative fuels including bio-fuels
for cars to help reduce fossil fuel consumption and to prevent
climate change.

REDUCING
Reducing waste For Toyota that means manufacturing vehicles in
ways that ensure maximum energy efficiency and minimum waste.
For example:
All their European manufacturing plants have zero waste going to
landfill since January 2007.
In Europe, the average energy consumption required to build a car
has reduced by 44% since 2001.
During the same period water usage in Europe has been reduced by
37%.

REUSING
Reusing materials starts with a simple dismantling process.
Toyota has designed an 'Easy to Dismantle Mark' which indicates
points that assist in initial dismantling.
They have also developed a special plastic that can be used to make
bumpers and other parts. This plastic is easily recyclable and can be
used many times over.

RECYCLE
Recycling batteries, tyres, and oil filters requires an efficient collection
system.
To minimize the environmental impact Toyota has set up a waste
collection system that retrieves used parts from European dealers andsends them back for recovery.

parts.
Two parts use plastic recycled from production waste.

TOYOTAs GUIDING PRINCIPLES
Principles were in response to the international initiatives of the Rio
EarthSummit
This principles resulted in a statement of principles about forest
management, conservation and sustainable development so as to
balance the clash between trade and environmental rules.
The Toyota Guiding Principles are a cornerstone of their corporate
management philosophy and they continue to provide Toyota with a
clear path towards achieving sustainable development.

TOYOTAs GUIDING PRINCIPLES
These principles have been explored and developed in Toyota's Global
Vision 2010, adopted in April 2002, which proposes a series of long-
term policies on the theme of "Innovation into the Future."
Toyota's Global Vision 2010 guides management in its response to
long-term social changes, combining consideration for the
environment, the benefit to our customers of value-added products
and the encouragement of our employees through shared prosperity
and social involvement.

Organization Framework
The Toyota Environment Committee has been established for the
purpose of examining and crafting responses to the issues facing
product development and design, production and logistics and
environmental management.
This committee is comprised of top management, chaired by the

ACTION PLAN
The Toyota Environmental Action Plan was established with the
intent of helping lead efforts towards global regeneration through
environmentally-considerate technology.
It establishes initiatives, specific implementation items and targets
for the areas of development and design, procurement, production
and logistics, sales and marketing and recycling, as well as promotes
and strengthens environmental management.

Toyota Green Purchasing Guidelines
Solving the environmental issues facing the world requires the
combined efforts of people everywhere. That is why Toyota has
created guidelines for the business partners from which it purchases
automobile parts and materials, both within Japan and overseas,
requiring that they also make an active effort to implement
environmentally-considerate practices.

BIODIVERSITY GUIDELINES
Degradation of the natural environment is resulting in the loss of
biodiversity. Thus, as part of its "Contribution towards Sustainable
Development," Toyota has created guidelines aimed at helping to
maintain biodiversity.
Toyota's aim is to achieve growth that maintains a balance between
corporate activities and environmental preservation.
