Are Americans ready for the day when the car next to them at the traffic light does not have a driver? In short, no, according to a new AAA survey.

Despite the prospect that autonomous vehicles will be safer, more efficient and more convenient

than their human-driven counterparts, 78 percent of respondents reported feeling afraid to ride in a fully self-driving car, and only 10 percent said they’d feel safe sharing the road with driverless vehicles.

AAA is urging a gradual, safe introduction of driverless vehicles to ensure American drivers become informed and comfortable with this shift in mobility.

“A great race toward autonomy is underway, and companies are vying to introduce the first driverless cars to our roadways,” said Greg Brannon, director of AAA Automotive Engineering and Industry Relations. “However, while U.S. drivers are eager to buy vehicles

equipped with autonomous technology, they continue to fear a fully self-driving vehicle.”

Findings in the new survey mirror those from a similar 2016 study. While the vast majority of respondents say they would not feel safe in a fully self-driving vehicle, 59 percent do want some autonomous features in their next vehicle.

“U.S. drivers may experience some driver assistance technologies in their cars today – like lane control assist, rear-view cameras and blind spot alerts – but many feel they don’t work consistently enough to replace a human driver, and they’re correct,” Brannon said. “While these technologies will continue to improve over time, it’s important that consumers understand that today’s systems still require your eyes to be on the road and your hands on the wheel.”

Other findings show 54 percent feel less safe about the prospect of sharing the road with a self-driving vehicle, 34 percent said it would not make a difference,

Considered the world’s most cosmopolitan city when it was the wealthiest during the 17th century Golden Age, Amsterdam, the capital and cultural center of Holland, intrigues visitors with its wealth of museums, canals, bridges and unique architecture – and, of course, its deeply rooted Dutch ancestry.

A canal boat tour is one of the most enjoyable ways to see the city’s 17th-century merchants’ houses, bridges, church spires, houseboats and locks. But with a selection of at least 40 museums and art galleries, one cannot overlook Amsterdam’s cultural side. Of particular interest is the Rijksmuseum, which houses a great variety of art collections, including the Dutch Masters Rembrandt and Vermeer. The Van Gogh Museum, which has dedicated an entire floor to the master, is another must-see. Be sure to also make time for a sightseeing stop at Anne Frank’s House and Museum.

If you’re fortunate enough to be in the Netherlands during its eight weeks of Tulip Time, you will undoubtedly enjoy an excursion southward to the 70-acre Keukenhof Gardens.

I was fortunate to have been invited to the two-night inaugural sailing and naming ceremony of the Harmony of the Seas last November. Docked

in Fort Lauderdale, the pier is approximately five miles from the Fort Lauderdale airport. Always consider arriving the day prior to your cruise. The hotel stay the night before sailing gets you in vacation mode and removes the stress of potential travel delays.

Arrival on the Harmony of the Seas was at noon, beyond that our itinerary was nonstop. Day one onboard began with lunch, a self-guided tour of the ship, meeting in the Royal Theater to watch the naming ceremony being televised from the Aqua Theater, dinner and two shows. By now it is midnight and the lounges and Promenade deck are alive with music and dancing.

On day two the Harmony of the Seas docked in Nassau, Bahamas. One of the many excursions offered was a day at the Atlantis Water Park. The Atlantis is huge and the water park is great, with slides, lazy rivers, river rapids and beaches. Nighttime entertainment onboard ship includes various musical venues, comedy shows and headline entertainment.

In March 2016, I had the opportunity to tour the beautiful country of Italy with a group of 18 guests. Upon arrival in Rome, we were met by AAA Member Choice Vacations, a professionally escorted tour company. From that point on a AAA Member Choice Vacations tour guide brought us around the country by motor coach.

During our time in Rome we were able to see and tour the top attractions. We came to know the history and traditions of Rome. Piazza Venezia, the circus maximus, Arch of Constantine, the famous Piazza Navona. We visited the Coliseum and finished with the Vatican and Sistine Chapel. During our time touring we never waited in line for entrance tickets or worried about being lost; everything ran smoothly. If I was on my own, I never would have seen and toured all of this in two nights. Our tour guide made sure we had time at all locations while still having free time to ourselves to enjoy a nice meal, shop and explore more.

After Rome we continued our journey to Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis. We took a walking tour of the charming old city. Then we were off to Perugia.

REFLECTIONS OF ITALYThe Piazza Novembre is one of the grandest squares in Italy. Next we arrived in Florence, the “cradle of the Italian Renaissance.” While here we visited the world famous Academy Gallery to see Michelangelo’s incredible statue of David. During our culture tour of Florence, we viewed the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Palazzo Vecchio and the Church of Santa Croce. This is also a great city for dining and shopping for leather and jewelry. Next we visited a historic winery in the heart of the chianti region. We learned about the winery’s famed Tuscan wines and local specialties. The views here are breathtaking!

Next up, the island of Venice. During our time here we boarded a boat bound for Murano Island

for an up-close glass-making demonstration. When we returned to Venice we toured the

lively St Mark’s Square, the Doge’s Palace, the Bridge of Sighs and the clock tower. We then took a wonderful gondola ride while being serenaded by our gondolier!

Lastly, we went to Milan. We toured the city’s amazing sights on a locally guided tour including the Duomo (this magnificent Gothic cathedral is the third largest church in Europe), the opera house and Vittorio Emanuele Gallery.

Boston, Massachusetts, hailed as the Cradle of American Independence, is a vibrant city filled with historic treasures. One of the first must-sees on any traveler’s agenda should be to follow the famed Freedom Trail. Linking more than a dozen historic sites throughout the old town area, the route traces Boston’s pivotal role in the American Revolution. Previous studies of automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, self-parking technology and lane-keeping systems have shown strong promise, but also great variation, according to Brannon. Such variations may be particularly concerning to consumers, with AAA’s survey revealing that 81 percent of Americans feel that all automated vehicle systems should work similarly and consistently, regardless of vehicle manufacturer.

AAA is committed to ongoing unbiased examination of automated vehicle technologies to help educate consumers on emerging technologies. Future AAA testing will look at how well systems work together to achieve higher levels of automation.

You’ve Got Mail … From AAA AutoManagerIf you can’t remember when to get your vehicle

serviced, AAA can help with that. Now your local AAA club can help you with a new program called AAA AutoManager. It is an online service accessed through AAA.com, where you can answer a few questions about your vehicle and driving habits, and then AAA AutoManager will begin sending you reminder e-mails based on the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule for your vehicle and the way you drive.

Additionally, you can receive notices regarding

recalls and safety alerts related to your vehicle. You can also enter additional information to get reminders for car payments and car insurance premiums.

Roadside Assistance and InsuranceThe last two things to do before you leave is

to verify your AAA membership is up to date and check your vehicle insurance with AAA Insurance to make sure you have adequate coverage for your vacation travel.

in case of a breakdown or incident. Get plenty of sleep (at least six hours) the night before your day trip and schedule a break every two hours, or 100 miles, to avoid fatigued or drowsy driving. In case of an emergency, keep an emergency kit, cell phone and charger in the car at all times.
