POTENTATE’S APPOINTMENTSARE FOR ONE YEAR ONLY

As of January 1, 2009 all appointments made for the year 2008 willterminate. This statement is made to clarify a somewhat confus-ing situation. When a Potentate’s term of office has come to anend, all appointments made by him during his year will terminatealso. Such appointments include all Appointed Officers, Potentate’sAides, Ambassadors, committees and their chairman, etc. In thepast some Nobles have mistakenly believed their appointmentswere for life. This is not true. Each Potentate, when he assumesoffice, is responsible for making his own appointments, and in nocase does a Potentate bind his successor. If the incoming Poten-tate wishes you to continue in your position you will receive a letterfrom him to that effect.

Ill. Sir Dan and Lady Didgie have centered their atten-tion throughout the year toward the Shrine Hospital and pro-moting attendance and participation in all Shrine events onall levels from clubs and units to temple activities. Therewere many unique events from “pig races” to the “MysteryNight”. These are the activities that keep the Shrine aliveand involve the Nobility along with their families to partici-pate together with an important ingredient of “a new ideaand something a little different”. In the midst of all activities,we also take time to assist and contribute to the ShrineHospital. The Potentate’s project, The Transportation Fund, was introduced at a critical time when the cost of gettingthe kids to the hospital for their appointments has skyrock-eted. The First Lady’s project directly touches the children’slives. It covers the comfort items that fall outside the allot-ted budget, and yet are so very important to making thechildren comfortable. Thank you for a great year! We have had another good year of outstanding candi-dates becoming Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Our newNobles have entered another branch of the Masonic family, and as thus, have enlarged their experiences to a new level. The Nobility does represent the fun side of our Masonicendeavors and yet we also represent one of the greatestcharities to help all children with physical problems that fallwithin our hospital disciplines. With this responsibility, theShrine has the potential to the world to be the most visiblepart of the fraternity. I entreat each new Noble to treat theirstatus with fun, respect, and promote our valuable cause -KIDS. Get involved – “It’s fun to be a Shriner”.

I will attempt to try something a little different with theEditorial column. We have the clubs and units which arealways encouraged to submit articles to the Aahmes News. This is the best way to allow the general Nobility to knowwhat is going on with their activities and happenings. I wouldlike to open a venue whereas the individual Nobles canexpress an opinion or ask a question that would benefit thegeneral membership. Send these directly to “LETTERS TOTHE EDITOR”. Send e-mail to [email protected]. I willshare them with the Divan and others who may enlighten thesubject. Yes, they will be “edited” and we will include se-lected items in the Aahmes News.

Sally and I join the entire Aahmes News staff inwishing all A Very Happy New Year! May your new year beblessed with Good Health, Happiness, and Prosperity!

At Shriners Hospitals for Children, medical research ishaving a strong, positive impact on the care and cure ofchildren with orthopaedic problems, burn and spinal cordinjuries. What began as a token $12,000 allocation in the1960s has grown into a multimillion dollar international re-search program for the Shriners Hospital system. In 2008, Shriners Hospitals spent over $44 million onresearch in the pediatric orthopaedic, burn and spinal cordinjury fields. The research budget includes:

145 research projects37 research fellowships19 shared research facilities

The Research Advisory Board, a group of non-Shrinersscientists, annually reviews all research projects undertakenby the hospitals for scientific merit and clinical usefulness.Their recommendations are presented to the ResearchCommittee and to the Boards of Directors and Trustees ofShriners Hospitals for allocation of financial support. As withany research, solutions to today’s medical problems are notdiscovered in a day, a week or even a year. This importantwork takes time. Shriners Hospitals are committed to thesustained investment in clinically useful research so thatfundamental knowledge can be acquired, improving thequality of life for children with orthopaedic problems, burnand spinal cord injuries.

RUMBLINGS FROM THE HARLEY DUDE Well after eight years of writing this monthly article I am finally signing off. I want to thank those ofyou that have said that you enjoyed my writings. To the others I sure hope that I haven’t bored youtoo much. The past eight years have really flown by and I have truly enjoyed serving all of the Noblesand Ladies of Aahmes as your Recorder/Business Manager. I have given it my very best and I canensure you that everything I did was in the best interest of Aahmes Temple and the Nobles and Ladiesof Aahmes. I first retired from a real job in September of 1994 and never thought I would be going into an office every day again. Then I was elected to serve as the Recorder for Aahmes and once again was going

to an office every day. I can truly say that I enjoyed most every day that I served as Recorder but the time has come to againretire and I promise I will NEVER go to an office everyday again. It is time for Terri and I to truly enjoy our retirement before ourGrand kids are married and don’t have time for us any more. Terri and I will miss some of the functions but we will not bestrangers as the Aahmes family means a great deal to us. I will still be a little active as I have told our Chief Rabban, Terry thatI will serve as his Membership Chairman. I hope that some of you will volunteer to assist me in this very important task. OneNoble cannot deal with the many challenges we have facing us with Membership. I hope that we will be able to put togethera large group of working Nobles so that we can make a positive change in the Membership of Aahmes Shriners. It is aformidable undertaking but one that can be won if we work together.

I want to thank the office staff both past and present for the hard work they have provided during my tenure as Recorder. In the past there was Valerie and Leslie and now we have Cindy and Merry. I want to thank you ladies, very much for all of yoursupport. The Nobles of Aahmes owe you all a great big thank you for all you do for the Temple. There is a lot of work that goeson in the Temple office that I am sure most of the Nobles take for granted. To the new Recorder, whoever it might be, I want to offer my assistance whenever required (if wanted). I will still be activeas the President of the Shrine Recorders Association until the Imperial Sessions in San Antonio and I want to thank the Boardof Directors and the Nobles for allowing me to serve the Recorders association these past 5 years. It has truly been an honorto serve as only the second Recorder from Aahmes to do so. And in closing let me again state that it has been a real honorto serve as the Recorder/Bus Mgr for Aahmes Shrine Temple. Terri and I hope you had a very Happy Thanksgiving and lookforward to very Merry Holiday season. We also hope that the New Year brings much Happiness and great health to all of youand your families. The Harley Dude will now fade off into the sunset in a cloud of exhaust and a hearty HI HO SHRINERS.............

One day, when the Prophet Elijah was standing in the market place, a friend of his came up to him and asked, “Is there anyone inthis multitude who will have a share in the World to Come”? Elijah looked about him and with a sigh he answered,“No”. Then he looked about him again and pointed to two menwho had just entered the market place and were makingtheir way through the crowds. “Those two men will have ashare in World to Come.” What is their occupation and what have they done todeserve it?” asked Elijah’s friend. “They are clowns,” Elijah replied, “ and when they seepeople troubled in mind or heavy with sorrow, they makethem laugh; and when they meet people who quarrel, theymake peace between them.”

LEGION OF HONOR

TEMPLE GUARDSorry I missed last month’s news, I just

wasn’t up to it. I was saddened by the loss of Mounted Patrol horses. Mike’s horse willnever be forgotten, more human and much brighter thansome people I have known. He sure knew how to take careof the rest of them, (really knew how to untie a knot.) We areall sorry Mike and share your feelings. Acalanes FellowshipLodge has voted to add money to the reward that has al-ready been posted for information on the shooters. On another note, I must announce another milestone inthe life of a good Shriner and dedicated mason. WorshipfulJack Abraham celebrated his eightieth birthday at a secludedhill-side winery in Livermore which was hosted by his chil-dren and heavily attended by most of the family and many, many friends. Jack was totally surprised. He was lured tothe winery by a sly ruse set up by his daughter. When hearrived, in the custody of his wife and daughter, he wassteered around the building to the reception area and wasgreeted by a swarm of family and friends. He was in totalshock and disbelief, also very, very happy. Makes one for-get how fast the years go by. Speaking of how fast the time slips away, I make reser-vations for dinner at the temple on certain occasions andforget the damned date. Makes me feel bad, but I’m gettingold and I just blame it on the Blue Lodge, (We’re real busydoing degrees). Even so, I’ve managed to get to the TempleGuard meetings and enjoy some very fine repast, You justcan’t beat Shirley Abraham’s special meals, and don’t forgetthe tremendous works of Vicki Hitch. In fact all the Tegulaladies do a great job! I know some people consider cookinga chore, but they seem to enjoy it. I know Betty Simonsendoes because she’s always baking something good.

PAST MASTERS

The Legion of Honor finished the year with a potluck and elections in November and in December, the Livermore Holiday Parade on the6th followed by our Christmas Party on the 8th. The Christ-mas Party was held at the Shrine on our regular meetingnight and the food was provided by Strings, a popular Italianrestaurant. All of these events were a great success. It is my honor to announce the incoming officers for theLegion of Honor for 2009: Commander, Dain Warton; FirstLieutenant, Dave Wysock; Second Lieutenant, RussKennedy; Secretary and Treasurer, Orrin Rupert; and DrumMajor, Paul Rose. With the upcoming year’s leadership, weshould be very active. The date for the Official Visit hasbeen set for March 9th so mark your calendars. More infor-mation will be forthcoming in the February Aahmes News-letter. We also have dates for the Ice Cream Social, PastCommander’s Night and the Honored Ladies Night. Thisinformation will be mailed to our Legion of Honor membersat the first of the year. So be sure to come out and supportyour new Commander and his officers. With this being my last Legion of Honor newsletter formy command, I want to thank all of the men and womenwho have supported me during the past year. I want to thankthem for their support at the parades and the hours of prac-tice it took to make it happen; for their tireless work at ourfundraiser, the Ice Cream Social, and for coming togetherat a time of need and honoring one of our own, RalphRenholts I especially want to thank my wife, Shirley, for standingby my side and supporting me through another year of lead-ership of the Legion of Honor. Every month she called themembers of the unit to remind them of the upcoming meet-ings. With help from our Ladies she organized the food atthe parades, refreshments at the meeting, the Official Visit, and the Ice Cream Social. She made sure we always hadour banners and flags for the trailer. Without her assistance, the unit wouldn’t have been as strong as it was.

Things are looking up. The Band joined with the Ben Ali Band in Sacramento for the Ceremonial and a good time was had byall. We are looking forward to when their Band comes downto help us at the Presentation. At our last rehearsal the Band learned that a stringquartette is composed of a good violinist, a bad violinist, anex-violinist, and someone who hates violinists, all gettingtogether to complain about composers. They also learnedthat a big band is when the bar pays enough to bring twobanjo players.

---Durland L. Skinner Conductor

Each and every one of the members of the Legion of Honorcontributed to the success of the unit. I am honored to haveserved with these men and their ladies and proud to say Iwas their Commander for the 2008 year.

CLUB CHATTER

As I take pen in hand during these latter days of November (just before the BIG Thanksgiving Day) it is a personal enjoyment to have quite a bit of sunshine over the past few weeks. I’m almost positive that personal calendars were full andgatherings were harmonious for the greater portion of ourRedwood S.C group. The year wound down with events atvarious venues for the Club and for the individual units; theBand at a few House Parties and an event at Gonsea’s, andthe Clowns with some events and Nov 7th dinner at theBaywood Golf & Country Club, followed by another event atBaywood for the S/C on Dec 14th. A busy period, indeed! And all of this, just before the true Holiday Season. And speaking of Holidays-it has been said many times inthe article over the past 3-4 issues, that we sincerely hopethat you and your family had a very happy and joyous 2008Holiday Season and are looking forward to the great timesto be enjoyed in 2009!

Our club invited them to attend our dinner to thankthem for their help.
