January 2016 All Aamjiwnaang Band Members who are interested in retailing quota cigarettes through the Ministry of Finance are required to submit a complete (INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED-re-submit all documents) application in a SEALED ENVELOPE to: The Tobacco Allocation Committee c/o Assistant Band Administrator 978 Tashmoo Ave Sarnia, ON N7T 7H5 APPLICATIONS AND THE APPROVED POLICY ARE AVAILA-BLE AT THE BAND OFFICE COMPLETE applications must be received by 4:30 PM on

Monday March 1, 2016. Applicants must have the ability to purchase a minimum

number of cartons in advance. Late applications for request of quota cigarettes will not be

considered Cigarettes include Export A, Players, DuMaurier and other

non-generic brands. A decrease in allocation may occur year to year due to an

increase in retailers. YOU MUST PAY THE TOBACCO surcharge in advance of

March 31, 2016. If this fee is not paid your will not be eli-gible for quota this year.

TOBACCO CONTROL FOR MINORS The Tobacco Committee is conscious of provider

compliance to eliminate the ability of children and youth younger than nineteen to purchase tobacco products in community retail operations.

Retailers shall sell tobacco in accordance to federal guidelines regarding “the sale of tobacco to minors”.

The Band Administrator is responsible for the overall efficient and effective administrative and financial management of the Aamjiwnaang First Nation Band government, its infrastructure, program areas and services, and for keeping Chief and Council informed on all matters relating to the business of the First Na-tion.

JOB DUTIES: Provide leadership, supervision and direction to all Program Coordinators for the effective and efficient

administration of the programs and services of the First Nation, to ensure achievement of annual goals and objectives and compliance with program budgets

Maintain direct verbal and written contact with Chief and Council. Provide monthly written reports and financial statements to Chief and Council on Band operations, programs and services

Communicate effectively with Chief and Council, Program Coordinators, Council Committees and com-munity members to identify, plan and provide for the current and future needs of the Aamjiwnaang First Nation

Ensure that adequate financial controls, policies and procedures are in place and followed to enable reliable and accurate financial reporting and effective and secure management of Band funds and re-sources.

Oversee and direct the infrastructure resources and systems of the First Nation. Ensure the annual preparation of a five-year capital plan and budget for review and approval by Chief and Council.

Be informed and able to communicate regarding the First Nation’s programs and services, government policies and regulations

Implement Council decisions and policy; ensure Council motions, directions and resolutions are carried out in a timely, efficient and professional manner. Provide follow up reports to Council.

QUALIFICATIONS: University degree or college diploma in public administration, business administration or a related

field. Minimum of five year’s work experience in administration at a senior management level, with leader-

ship experience. Experience working for a First Nation government or organization.

The information below is shared with you to provide information about a community education initiative in-

volving the Aamjiwnaang Junior Kindergarten Program.

WHAT

Aamjiwnaang First Nation will be completing a community-based and comprehensive evaluation of our Jun-

ior Kindergarten program.

WHEN

Effective immediately and to be completed by March 2016

WHY

Chief and Council together with education administration are supportive of this evaluation because education

itself has been and continues to be of great importance and value for our community. The completion of an

evaluation is a significant and effective tool utilized within education systems to better understand issues,

highlight successes, and to facilitate improvements for the benefit of all education stakeholders, especially the

students. This evaluation will also fulfil mandatory reporting requirements to Indigenous and Northern Af-

fairs Canada as well.

Input about our JK program will be sought from a variety of education stakeholders, such as Elders, parents/

guardians, community members, administrators, teachers, education staff, and other personnel providing sup-

ports for education. Information will be obtained through the completion of a series of confidential individual

interviews and or focus groups. The confidential feedback will be important to help facilitate meaningful and

responsive improvements to the JK program with a goal for ongoing student success and achievement.

WHO

Consultants have been engaged to design the evaluation, gather relevant information from community educa-

tion stakeholders, and to provide sound recommendations. The lead consultant is Cindy Hare and she is sup-

ported by Christy Bressette who will be assisting by conducting the interviews. Cindy will be on-site in the

community on February 1 -3, 2016. Please see the photos and short bios of the consultants below.

Lead Consultant

CINDY HARE -

Cindy Hare is a member of the Temagami First Nation - Deep Water Peo-

ple. Cindy started in the field of Early Childhood Education. (ECE), then

continued to complete a BSW - Native Human Services at Laurentian Uni-

versity in Sudbury, ON. This was followed by a Bachelor of Education and

Masters of Education at Nipissing University specializing in Educational

Leadership. Cindy has been a lifelong educator, working as a JK and SK

Primary teacher, College Professor teaching Early Childhood Education and

Anishnaabe Studies, Program Coordinator for Native Community and So-

cial Development, Education Consultant and Education Manager and Prin-

cipal on Bear Island, Lake Temagami. Cindy’s overall professional goals

are to help Anishnaabe students be successful in all forms education and to

live a good life (mno maaudis). Also, to teach others about the richness and

wonderment of the First Nations Anishnaabe Culture and Heritage.

Christy Bressette –

Christy is an Anishinabe parent, student, teacher, and community member of Kettle

and Stony Point First Nation. She is an educator within provincial public schools, First

Nation schools, and within several Canadian universities. She is an active supporter of

programs designed to empower Aboriginal youth and increase parental engagement

and community participation in education.

Winter alerts can be categorized into three basic categories (each of which can occur in com-

bination with another):

Precipitation alerts:

Snowfall – significant snowfall

Snow Squall – when cold air moves across larger open bodies of water (such as the Great

Lakes) creating nearly stationary bands of cloud and snow

Freezing Rain/ Drizzle – when rain or drizzle falls onto sub-zero surfaces and freezes on

contact forming a layer of ice

Rainfall – significant rainfall

Winter Storm - issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur

together

Cold Alerts:

Wind Chill – wind or cold on their own may not be hazardous, but the combination of the

two may warrant issuing this type of alert

Flash Freeze – issued when a rapid drop in temperature causes water from rain or melted

snow on streets, sidewalks etc. to quickly freeze

Cold Weather Alert - issued when the low temperature is forecast to drop to -15 C or 5 F.

Overexposure can lead to frost bite and hypothermia. Seek shelter, so stay inside when it’s

this cold.

Poor Visibility alerts:

Blizzard – issued when winds are expected to create blowing snow giving widespread re-

duced visibility of 400 metres or less

Blowing Snow – issued when winds are expected to create blowing snow giving poor visibil-

“How to Stay Committed to Self-Care Even When it’s Cold Outside” Hi everyone! It’s Caralee, BSW placement student at the Health Centre. I’m back from the holiday break and it looks like the snow is back too! Win-ter has finally arrived. I have heard people share that they are thankful for the extended warmer weather and the absence of snow. However, alt-hough the weather is still up and down, we do now have to deal with scraping off the car, getting out the hats and gloves, etc. I know that per-sonally, “when the snow is here, I keep a pile of blankets near.” I like to

bundle up and get cozy, and leaving the house can sometimes be a difficult task. Another difficult task that many people express during the winter season is staying devoted to self-care. Although it is dark and bitter-cold out there, self-care is important to remember year-round. I’ve found some simple self-care tips from a lovely girl named Erin. She updates her blog regularly with respect to her advocacy for self-love and a sense of wellness. 1. Find an exercise schedule that works for you In winter we can all be tempted to hit the snooze button again and again. There are certainly some mornings we do need to get a little bit of extra sleep but choosing sleep over a morning workout isn’t an excuse to not do any exercise at all.

You can bring your active clothes to work and head out for a run or a walk at lunch time, which will

also give you the chance to soak up some sunshine. You could also try a gently heated yoga class

or join a gym that offers classes that you actually want to attend.

2. Dig out your journal and reconnect with yourself

Self-care practices are a great way to deepen the relationship we have with ourselves, and jour-

naling is a quick and easy way to really tap into this. Grab your favourite pen, a journal, light a can-

dle if you’d like, and write away.

There is no wrong or right way to journal, so feel free to write whatever your heart desires. This

could be anything from your dreams and goals, to something that has been weighing on your mind,

or even a poem.

3. Give yourself permission to slow down

Staying committed to self-care means that you need to actively devote time to yourself. The urge to

hibernate in winter is real, and this time of year is perfect for an at-home retreat. Pick a weekend

where you can take a break from your usual chores and to-do list, and instead fill your body with

warm, nourishing foods and gently move your body. For one weekend, allow yourself to do any-

thing that makes you feel good – whatever that means to you.

Richard (Animkii-Ankwad) is Anishnaabe from Wikwemikong First Nation on

Manitoulin Island. He currently lives in the city of North Bay. Richard is

actively involved in the preservation of his culture and traditions and is a

fluent Anishnaabemwin (Ojibwa) speaker. He has worked with Aboriginal

people struggling with the justice system and has worked inside Community

Corrections facilities. Richard had endured many difficult life situations and he

openly shares these experiences, his acquired knowledge and his wisdom

through his personal story of spiritual development. Although Richard is

familiar with many modalities of Traditional Healing, he is most often called

upon to create sacred space and facilitate spiritual ceremony, communicating

with our ancestors, and assisting people to find their original connections to

creation.

One to one visits

our visiting Traditional Healers/Elders are required to have a Shkaabewis – a Helper –

present at all times. Our Shkaabewis will assist you and the Traditional Healers with

all aspects of your visit, including note taking to help you remember your conversa-

tion. You might feel a bit nervous about approaching a Traditional Healer during your

first visit; this is normal and natural. Our Traditional Healers will do everything they

can to try and put your mind at ease so you can be relaxed and comfortable as possi-

ble. Before and after each visit you will be given an opportunity to evaluate your ex-

perience based on a short, wholistic evaluation.

Find the right time and place to talk. Be calm, caring, non-threatening. Listen. Talk about the

concerns by using facts and accurate information. Encourage the person to see a doctor.
