FROM THE BOARD A MONTHLY SUMMARY OF BOARD HIGHLIGHTS AND DECISIONS

March 2006 TCDSB Trustee determination remains at 12 The Populations of Electoral Groups Report 2006 indicates that as of January 1, 2006, the Toronto Catholic District School Board English Separate School supporter population is 453,074. The regulations governing determination of the number of trustees to be elected in the TCDSB jurisdiction for the November 2006 municipal elections shows that the Board continues to have the authority to elect a maximum of 12 trustees. The Board has approved the number of trustees to be elected to the new Board as 12, and the current geographic distribution. The Board has been asked to participate in the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) pilot project whose purpose is to streamline accessibility of information on its Ontario Assessment System in order to better meet school boards’ and municipalities’ business needs. Religious Knowledge Test grades 4 and 7 The Toronto Catholic District School Board will pilot the already developed Religious Knowledge Test in grades 4 and 7 in at least five schools in Ward 7 starting in the 2006-2007 school year. A report on that pilot will be brought back to the Board in September 2007. Staff were directed to have the test reviewed by the Vicar for Catholic Education and the Institute for Catholic Education. Tentative Settlement of Collective Agreement with Occasional Teachers The Board ratified the terms and conditions of the tentative settlement reached with TOTL (Occasional Teachers) for the renewal of the collective agreement covering the Board’s occasional teachers for the term of September 1, 2004 to August 31, 2008. Board invites community to meetings regarding capital needs Parents, staff and Catholic stakeholders are invited to attend a Community Information Meeting to learn more about the existing capital needs of the Board and about the Board’s budget as it relates to school facilities and accommodation issues: • March 23, 2006 7 p.m. Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School, 2 St. Andrews Boulevard, Etobicoke • March 30, 2006 7 p.m. Catholic Education Centre, 80 Sheppard Avenue East, North York • April 4, 2006 7 p.m. Senator O’Connor College School, 60 Rowena Drive, North York • April 27, 2006 7 p.m. Cardinal Newman Catholic School, 100 Brimley Road South, Scarborough • May 4, 2006 7 p.m. Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School, 1515 Bloor Street West,

Board Moves Forward With Strategies Regarding Funding Issues The Toronto Catholic District School Board will partner with the Toronto District School Board to participate in a four-phase strategy at a cost of no more than $50,000 to the TCDSB. The Board will be engaged at the appropriate times during the four-phase process for update and input. OCSTA representatives selected The Board has nominated the Chair of the Board Oliver Carroll, and Trustee Paul Crawford to serve on the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association Board of Directors for a two-year term ending April 2008. Board to request funding for portables The Board has approved the purchase and installation of 16 portables to accommodate additional classes created through the cap on primary class sizes, and two portables for regular program purposes at an estimated cost of $1.494 million. The Board will request funding from the Ministry of Education to offset the cost of the 16 portables. Air conditioning in schools discussed Staff were directed to report on the development of a strategy for school cooling using portable air conditioners. Staff will also investigate and develop a pilot project by applying for government grants that could be used to keep our schools cool using natural methods such as using green roofing, heat pumps and solar panels. Principals and CSACs will be asked to convene and work on a short term strategy that would work for their own community and to offer their comments to the Board on a long-term strategy that could be used to lobby the government. St. Malachy nets elementary school hoops title By SAM LASKARIS , Scarborough Mirror, 03/28/06 St. Malachy Catholic School now has itself a championship girls' basketball team. The Scarborough-based elementary school, which opened its doors back in 1969, never had much success on the court. Until this season, that is. The St. Malachy squad is undefeated thus far, winning all 12 of its matches. The club captured the Toronto Catholic elementary title earlier this month, defeating Nativity of Our Lord 28-22 in the championship final. "Our school had never even won a divisional championship in girls' basketball," said Tom O'Connor, who shares the St. Malachy coaching duties with William Lee. "To keep going on and on and on was quite a surprise." After winning a divisional title, St. Malachy then captured the Scarborough crown. Then the club reeled off three more victories en route to its Toronto title. Team members are now waiting to hear about a GTA tournament, to be held next month. That event, which will include both Catholic and public elementary schools, could feature as many as 12 squads. "If we do win it, it would be a nice surprise because we never expected we'd get this far," O'Connor said. The St. Malachy team includes 11 players, including star guard Samantha Nicado, the lone Grade 6 player on the roster. The team's line-up also features five Grade 8 and five Grade 7 players. Besides Nicado, other key performers are guard Kaitlyn Keon, centre Jennifer Ing and forwards Teresa Georgiadis and Caitlin Mancini. "Those were my five starters," O'Connor said. "But the other girls played a big role as well." For O'Connor, this marks the third year he has coached the girls' hoops team at St. Malachy. "Usually small schools are at a bit of a disadvantage because they have less kids to choose from," he said. St. Malachy currently has 370 students. O'Connor, who joined the St. Malachy staff eight years ago, was not surprised to learn about the school's previous lack of basketball success. "They had less than 200 kids eight years ago," he said.

Baby footsteps extension of the faith TAMARA SHEPHARD Etobicoke Mirror March 27, 2006 The Lord replied, "My precious, precious child. I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you." (Footprints in the Sand by Margaret Fishback) Students at St. Louis Catholic School in Mimico are following in the footsteps of Jesus, launching their Baby Footsteps campaign Monday, raising funds to outfit baby kits for new moms who are clients of Ernestine's Women's Shelter in north Etobicoke.

The Lenten project aims to fill each baby box with approximately $30 worth of items, including a sleeper, receiving blanket, bottle, sippy cup, socks, toys and rattle. "We're doing this because Jesus reminds us to reach out, help those in need, follow in His footsteps and be loving members of this world we live in," teacher and Baby Footsteps project co-ordinator Mary Anne Cousineau told students gathered at a school assembly Friday morning to learn about the project.

Cousineau received an exemplary practice award last year from the Toronto Catholic District School Board for the integration of service into the school's curriculum through last year's Lenten project - outfitting bed kits for children in developing countries for Sleeping Children Around the World. "This celebration of service puts St. Louis on the map as a school that's very dedicated to service related to gospel values," principal Rosanne Morris said of Cousineau's award.

Staff at St. Louis put out the word they wanted to support a women's shelter as the school's Lenten project this year. A parent saw an ad for Ernestine's Women's Shelter in the Guardian and the die was cast. "Staff believe collectively in these kinds of projects," Morris said in an interview. "This is the way of love, and those aren't just words. It's demonstrated every day in action by staff and parents to students. "This school is really alive in service." During Lent, Catholics are called upon to engage in the spirit of service and alms giving as part of the season of soul-searching and repentance.

Parents of students are also taking part, approaching local businesses for donations of items like baby shampoo, diapers, bottles, sippy cups and bibs. Business owners with donations may call St. Louis at 416-393-5331. Baby Footsteps finds each class choosing a fundraising project; already, a bake sale and an obstacle course are among the activities planned.

"This is the first time a school has come to us, saying we'd like to help, what would be most helpful to you," Cindy Wagman, resource development officer with Ernestine's said. "It's addressing the real needs of our moms. Everything is brand new, the children get to fundraise and the new babies gain tremendously." Last year, 10 moms gave birth while they were staying at Ernestine's. Shelter administrators are encouraged by the courage of women fleeing abusive situations when pregnant, a vulnerable time when abuse often escalates, Wagman said. An increase in pregnant clients in a positive sign that points to the end of the cycle of abuse, she said. The shelter's 22 beds are almost always full, with women staying there on average between two to six months. Later this year, Ernestine's will open a new shelter with more beds to house more clients.

Students grade 1's Silvija Sprem, grade 3's Karen Quispe, grade 4's Katie Zutautas and Brandon DiCorpo in grade 5 acted as student spokespersons for the two-week project that ends on April 7. "I think it's a really good idea because we're helping out people in need and making them feel safe," Zutautas said in an interview. "We're doing something really good." DiCorpo put it this way: "We have all this stuff. You see people who have nothing. Donating stuff to them makes you feel good."

The new moms living at the shelter in the next 18 months will also feel good about the donation, Wagman said. "With all your caring and kindness these babies will be starting their lives with everything their mom needs to take them home," Wagman told students. "You're helping mothers and babies who really, really need it."

Students at St. Louis Catholic School are collecting baby items for kits that will be distributed to young mothers at Ernestine's Women's Shelter. Here, from the left and showing off items in a kit are, Katie Zutautas, Brandon Di Corpo, Silvija Sprem and Karen Quispe.

Serving up a kids tennis program for high-need areas By norm nelson, Scarborough Mirror, 03/28/06 A unique new tennis program is being targeted at elementary kids in high-need areas across the city. The program, a joint effort between Tennis Canada and the Ontario Tennis Association, was officially unveiled at a Monday press conference at one of the designated schools, St. Lawrence Catholic Elementary School on Lawrence Avenue, just west of Kennedy Road, in Scarborough.

"If we really want to make a difference, we make the difference in the elementary schools, we make the difference with these students (who) are here along the wall," said Toronto Catholic District School Board chair and Ward 8 Scarborough Trustee Oliver Carrol.

"This program allows us to provide them with an opportunity to learn a sport, that in many cases they don't get a chance to. They're provided with materials by Tennis Canada ... and it gives them the opportunity to go out, compete against each other and at the same time be a part of a broader society."

The $40,000 program kicked off in February at 51 Catholic elementary schools in Toronto, Michael Downey, president and CEO of Tennis Canada, told the gathering.

The initial startup funding was donated by the Tevlin family as well as former Ontario premier Bob Rae. Corporate support was provided by American Express and Wilson Sports.

"Right now we know can put it in another 47 high-need schools next year," said Downey in an interview. "We'd like to, in the next six months, raise enough money to hit 100 schools next year.

"And we'd like to be able to do that on an ongoing basis so that every year there's at least 100 new schools in high-need areas in the city that would get this program. "Then we'd like to be able to raise more money to take it into high need areas outside of the city as well."

Ward 37 Councillor Michael Thompson (Scarborough Centre) helped Tennis Canada forge the community partnerships, and he explained that it kicked off in the Catholic board because "they were ready to go" with it, and even chipped in some seed funding along with Tennis Canada.

The game is a modified form of tennis called "mini" or "floor" tennis that is kid-friendly. The racquets, which are lighter, have bigger heads and smaller handles (like a racquet ball handle), and make it easier to consistently whack the ball. The balls are specially made, and there are two types. One looks like a regular tennis, ball but without the weight or the bounce. The other one is oversized and Nerf-like. This allows it to be played on a smaller court, making it ideal for school gymnasiums. A "mini" net is also used.

The Ontario Tennis Association was already running the program in more than 100 schools across the province, thanks to funding from the provincial and federal governments. They said they were thrilled to partner with Tennis Canada to provide the program to high-need areas in Toronto.

Also on hand to inspire the kids were a couple of area youth stars, Peter Polansky of Thornhill and Scarborough's Megan Bedeau. Polansky has collected national championships at the U-14, U-16 and U-18 levels and is currently the second ranked junior player in the country.

Bedeau, 17, has won seven Ontario Tennis Association titles in addition to being a finalist seven times. Bedeau is currently finishing a program for gifted athletes at Northview Heights Secondary School in North York, but prior to that attended Scarborough schools including Cedarbrae Collegiate Institute (grades 9 to 11), Henry Hudson (grades 7 and 8), Morrish (grades 4 to 6) and Tom Longboat (kindergarten to Grade 3) public schools. She's entertaining a full scholarship offer from the University of Texas-Pan American.

Trojans seek to defend OFSAA hockey crown SAM LASKARIS , Etobicoke Guardian, 03/21/06 The Michael Power/St. Joseph Trojans have travelled a rather lengthy distance in order to defend its provincial high school hockey championship. The Trojans are one of 20 senior boys' clubs participating at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) AAA/AAAA tournament in Fort Frances. To reach the northern Ontario town, the Trojans had to first fly to Thunder Bay yesterday (Tuesday) and then the club had to take about a four-hour bus ride to arrive at the tournament location. Trojans' coach Rick Reilly said his charges have one main objective. "The goal is to repeat as champs," he said. "That's been the goal all year. I think we have a good chance." But the local squad will have to compete at OFSAA without six of its regulars. That's because those half dozen players had to stay in town as they had other commitments with other hockey clubs outside of the school. Thanks in part to a couple of additions from the school's junior team, the Trojans though still managed to take 19 players to Fort Frances.

A year ago, Michael Power/St. Joseph pulled off several upsets at the OFSAA tournament held in Windsor. The Trojans had entered that event as the No. 13 seed. As for this time around, the local squad has been seeded fifth. Reilly realizes several things have to occur in order to win a provincial crown. "All the planets have to align themselves, so to speak," he said. "And it's a marathon. To win it you have to play seven games in four days." Reilly is encouraged by the fact his squad has had some success against the top two ranked teams at OFSAA.

The St. Michael's College Double Blues of Toronto are the top seed. The Trojans battled to a 2-2 draw against St. Michael's College at a game in a tournament the Double Blues played host to this past November. Michael Power/St. Joseph also settled for a 2-2 tie in a tournament match this past December against the Mount Carmel Crusaders from Mississauga, who are the No. 2 seed at OFSAA. The Trojans are guaranteed of at least playing four round-robin matches at the provincials.

The highest seed Michael Power/St. Joseph will square off against in pool play is the fourth-seeded Birchmount Park Panthers from Scarborough. The Trojans will also play the No. 12 seed Fort Frances Muskies, 13th-seeded Uxbridge Tigers and the No. 20 seed, Ottawa's St. Matthew Tigers. Hockey Trojans denied OFSAA repeat SAM LASKARIS Etobicoke Mirror Mar. 28, 2006 They were unsuccessful in defending its provincial high school hockey championship but the Michael Power/St. Joseph Trojans still gave it a good go nonetheless. The Etobicoke-based high school did not qualify beyond round-robin play at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) AAA/AAAA tournament, which ended last weekend in Fort Frances. Michael Power/St. Joseph had entered the 20-team event as the No. 5 seed. The Trojans won two out of four round-robin contests. "You can't win all the time," reasoned Trojans' coach Pat Reilly. A year ago the Michael Power/St. Joseph squad won the OFSAA title in Windsor. The Trojans pulled off some upsets en route to that crown as they were the No. 13 seed. As for last week's tournament, the Trojans were defeated 4-2 by the Uxbridge Tigers, this year's No. 13 seed, in their opener. Michael Power/St. Joseph then edged Ottawa's St. Matthew Tigers 5-4 in their next outing. The Tigers were the No. 20 seed. The Trojans also thumped the fourth-seeded Birchmount Park Panthers from Scarborough 8-1. Michael Power/St. Joseph needed a tie or a win in its final round-robin game to move on to the quarter-finals. But the Trojans were doubled 6-3 by the host Fort Frances Muskies, the No. 12 seed. "We just ran out of gas in that game," Reilly said. The Trojans and Muskies were deadlocked at 3-3 heading into the final period. Michael Power/St. Joseph played its final game in front of about 2,000 boisterous Muskies' fans. "I was happy with the experience the boys had," Reilly said. "It was an amazing experience for them." Reilly added he was thrilled with the friendliness and hospitality of all the people his team met in the small northern Ontario town. A memorable moment for Reilly was when his club was introduced and welcomed at a Sunday morning church service. "People started clapping in the church for us," Reilly said. "I thought that was kind of cool." Michael Power/St. Joseph competed at OFSAA without six of its regulars. Those half dozen players stayed home as they had commitments with their rep hockey clubs. Mississauga's Mount Carmel Crusaders, the Number 2 seed, won the provincial title. The Crusaders beat the top-ranked St. Michael's College Double Blues 4-2 in the gold-medal contest held this past Saturday.

St. Anselm Catholic School Raised Funds for Philippine Mudslide Victims Jodelyn Huang, Toronto Catholic District School Board It was compassion and generosity of spirit that prompted Grade 6 student Agnes Marbella to lead a fundraising campaign at St. Anselm Catholic School for victims of the Philippine landslide tragedy. “I saw on television what happened in the Philippines and I felt really bad for all the families who lost their children and relatives in the mudslide and I wanted to help them”, she said. Wasting no time, she wrote a letter to the school’s Principal, Rita Santo, about the tragedy and her proposal to raise funds and in no time the whole school community was involved. “The students initiated the fundraising and we supported them,” said Grade 6 teacher Mrs. Holt. “We made announcements on the PA and prepared creative posters which we put around the school to raise awareness about the disaster and how we can get the school involved,” added Janine Kowalczyk, grade 6. On March 3, the Grade 6 class had a Toonie Day and was able to raise $340. Meanwhile, the Grade 2 students, who are preparing for Holy Communion, decided to hold a Book Sale on March 8 in the gymnasium. “We asked people to donate books for sale and people gave us hundreds of great books!” said Chelsea Clarks. “And we sorted the books into novels and picture books,” quipped another Grade 2 student, Jose Jimenez. The Grade 2s were assisted by Grade 5s, their buddy class. hey sold more than a thousand books and raised $520. On March 29, Jose Saavedra Jr, President of Leyteno Association in Ontario, received the amount of $860 from the students, witnessed by St. Anselm’s Parish Associate Pastor, Rev. David Warren, S.F.M. and the school’s Principal, Rita Santo.
