Rare letter in English by Napoleon sellsfor $404,757A rare letter in English written byNapoleon Bonaparte -- and replete witherrors -- fetched $406,445 at auction.

The one-page letter, dated March 9,1816, penned by Napoleon during hispost-Waterloo exile on the South At-lantic island of Saint Helena, was oneof just three known in the world.

Addressed to the Count of Las Cases,Napoleon's companion in exile, the let-ter was acquired by the private Mu-seum of Letters and Manuscripts inParis and originally estimated to fetchjust $75,000 to $100,000.

In his "Memorial of Saint Helena", LasCases wrote about how Napoleonbegan in March 1816 to correspondwith him in English in order to practicethe language of his jailers that he hadbegun learning a few weeks earlier.

The Count also wrote in particular aboutthe auctioned letter, saying: "The em-peror did not sleep that night -- duringhis insomnia, he decided to write me anew letter in English.

"He sent it sealed to me, I corrected hiserrors, and replied to him, in Englishalso, by mail. "He understood the letter, and that convinced him of his progressand proved to him that he could, com-pletely, correspond in his new lan-guage."

Despite Las Cases encouraging words,Napoleon's writing required someguesswork.

After his defeat to the British at the 1815Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon was im-prisoned and then exiled to Saint He-lena where he died in 1821 age 51.
