AARD All-HandsJune 29th, 2010
Topics for Discussion
• ARD Strategic Plan• ARD Organizational Changes• Safety, Brown Bag Seminars, making AARD’s
work more publicly accessible • AOB
ARD’s Five Objectives
• Maintain the world’s leading x-ray FEL program with innovation and new concepts
• Be the world leader in high power rf systems and high gradient normal conducting rf linacs
• Be a world leader in the advanced accelerator R&D program, with a focus on e+/e-
• Support the ongoing accelerator-based program of the laboratory
• Have a renowned accelerator education program training future leaders in the field
Maintain the world’s leading x-ray FEL program with innovation and new concepts
• Strong FEL theory and design program• Beam injector improvement• High brightness beam development• Timing/synchronization/diagnostics• Compact and/or high rate FELs• (X-ray beam handling, with LCLS Division)
Be the world leader in high power rf systems and high gradient normal conducting rf linacs
• Pursue additional options for collaboration on x-band technology
• Demonstrate x-band capabilities• Industrialize rf components• Maintain research excellence and develop concepts
when ready• Expand SCRF power source expertise to support a future
ERL or CW SCRF FEL• Develop accelerator technology to support high gradient
linacs
Bea a world leader in advanced accelerator R&D program with a focus on e+/e-
• Maintain world leading experimental effort in AARD
• Broaden collaborations on AARD• High gradient beam driven concepts• Laser acceleration• High gradient microwave acceleration• Beam physics and Accelerator Technology
Support the ongoing accelerator-based program of the laboratory
• Assist in maximizing LCLS performance• Contribute to LCLS-II design• SPEAR-3, PEP-X, and storage rings• Contribute to LHC and Project-X• Participate in future e+/e- colliding beam
accelerators• Maintain core competencies
Have a renowned accelerator education program training future leaders in the field
• Establish ARD committee on education• Attract new graduate students• Attract new undergraduate students• Attract excellent postdocs and staff• Increase engagement of SLAC staff in
educational programs• Establish international relationships to attract
students and fellows
AARD-Specific Organizational Changes
• Advanced Electronics“Feedback and Dynamics”– Has become a separate group within AARD
• FEL Physics Group formed within Beam Physics– Ron Ruth has joined this group
• AARD Deputy Head Bob Noble• ARD Lead for Accelerator Education Ron Ruth• ARD Division-wide safety coordinator Joe Kenny

Matrixed employees
Other Items• Keep your training up to date—it is your responsibility to maintain your
training. If you have problems getting the training you need, let me know.
• AARD Brown Bag series– The series will restart this summer—participate!
• A chance for the four AARD groups to share progress and issues• Especially valuable for new students
• Update the posters in our hallway– Please work with Joan and Naomi to post your latest conference posters in
the hallway
• New Sharepoint website is up and awaits your input:https://slacportal.slac.stanford.edu/sites/ard_public/aard/Pages/Default.aspx
Summer Intern Scott Wey
Congratulations & Welcome• Joel England named a W. K. H. Panofsky Fellow!• Themis Mastoridis named a finalist for the Toohig
Fellowship!• Rachik Laouar (Ecole Centrale de Lille) will be part of
AARD as a visiting scientist June-December• Incoming Stanford graduate students (July 1st):
– Derek Mendez (UT-Austin) to Applied Physics– Ihsan Amimul (Sun Micr.) to Electrical Engineering
