HISTORY

The Arizona Arsenal Soccer Club (formally Gilbert Soccer Club) was created in 1992 as an offshoot of the Gilbert Youth Soccer Association (GYSA). GYSA recognized the need in the community to create a place where the highly advanced players could develop and test their skills against the best players throughout Arizona. It was slow going in the first few years, but Arizona Arsenal Soccer club has now grown to over 60 competitive teams, Arsenal Youth Development Program and Little Strikers with over 1100 players. Most of these players go on to play for the local high schools and many will then continue on to play in college.

Arizona Arsenal Soccer Club competes in the Boys and Girls Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) and has won over 20 state championships in the clubs existence. In addition, many Arizona Arsenal Soccer Club players have been selected over the years to participate in National Team Camps, US Training Centers, ODP Regional Teams and ODP Arizona State Teams.

Arizona Arsenal Soccer Club teams travel out of state and compete against the best the country has to offer. Several teams are ranked regionally and nationally. The professional coaching staff includes teachers, former college players, most with national level coaching licenses. Many of these coaches also coach local high school, coach community college soccer teams and have played at a high level. Arizona Arsenal Soccer Club works to ensure that every youth player in Arizona has the chance to reach their potential on the soccer field and in life.

CURRICULUM

x

Curriculum Zone 1 (7 thru 10) Teach the “Fun” of the game and encourage a “Love” of the game. Dribbling and shooting with both feet are emphasized along with balance, agility, coordination, change of direction, and quick movements with the ball. Foot skills with both feet to keep the ball close and learning to beat players on the dribble is developed. Small sided games up to 3 v 3 keep the players involved, active, and learning at a quick pace. Curriculum Zone 2 (11 thru 12) Emphasis continues in the areas above, but now development of the technical aspects of passing on the ground, receiving both ground and air balls, first touch, turning with the ball, shooting from all types of angles and positions, heading, shielding, supporting angles, beginning elements of defending both individually and in small groups become priorities. Dribbling moves known as Coerver moves are taught to beat players or create space to pass. This is the “Golden Age of Learning”, where the players absorb so much so quickly if they are just given the chance to learn. Curriculum Zone 3 (13 thru 14) All the technical elements above continue to be emphasized and perfected, now under more pressure from opponents. Ability to make better decisions by getting the head up, opening the body up to the field, and seeing more information prior to receiving the ball is strongly emphasized (better vision and situation awareness). Movement off the ball and combination play is taught and encouraged during small sided/possession games and gradually introduced into the real game. Shooting, crossing and heading continue to be emphasized in the flow of the game and under pressure. Group defensive shape with defender and midfield positions are taught within the structure of the team formation. Roles and responsibilities of players within the team are developed to a greater extent. Curriculum Zone 4 (15 thru 19) Individual technique for each skill area above is continually developed under game type pressure. Improving vision and situation awareness are put under greater pressure in practices. Team tactics and formations are emphasized more. How to defensively play high or low pressure defense, respond to offside tactics, incorporate set pieces, develop the attack within the offensive third, develop attacking play out of the back, are all taught. Functional training for forwards, midfielders and defenders and continued development of player’s roles and responsibilities within different formations are developed both offensively and defensively.
