The AASHTO Management Institutes (formerly National Transportation Management Conferences) take place on average five times a year at various locations around the United States. This training offers content geared to providing DOT supervisors, managers, and leaders with the crucial competencies and resources needed to simplify and perform their critically important roles.In this four-day program, participants are introduced to the applications, tools and best practice techniques for successfully performing their functions and managing their most important resource… people! The Management-Leadership Operating System presented offers a refinement of existing skills, challenges current mindsets, introduces new concepts and explores changing employee and customer relationships.This institute, developed under the guidance of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) are tailored specifically for the supervisor, manager and leadership staff of AASHTO member departments and affiliated organizations, including the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Our Instructors

PAULA HAMMOND, PE, is the Senior Vice President, National Transportation Market Leader for WSP USA responsible for representing the company as an industry leader in emerging transportation areas such as connected and automated futures, system operations, pricing, resilience and integrated corridor management. Paula dedicated her 34-year public service career to improving transportation systems in Washington state, and served as WA Secretary of Transportation from 2007-2013. She has been a national figure on transportation issues, with leadership on numerous AASHTO committees, TRB Executive Board, ARTBA Board of Trustees and WTS International Board of Directors.

SUSAN MARTINOVICH, PE, is Vice President and DOT National Practice Consultant at HNTB. She serves as a senior advisor on projects throughout the country to ensure DOT’s and other clients’ needs are considered and addressed. Before joining HNTB, she was a national highway market leader for Jacobs. Prior to entering the consultant world, she served as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) Director from 2006 until 2012, where she retired after a 27 year career at NDOT. She was AASHTO president in 2010/11 and has also received numerous industry awards.

KIM D. WARD, has been involved in the training and consulting industry in a variety of capacities since 1990. He has over 35 years of sales, management, and executive leadership experience. His expertise encompasses organizational assessment and analysis, strategy and process re-organization, consulting, curriculum development, video script development and video talent, keynote speaking, and seminar facilitation. Kim has been instrumental in helping hundreds of organizations achieve and exceed growth and productivity objectives. Kim has authored and co-authored numerous training programs including Leading High Velocity Change; Partnering for Success; and Management Leadership in the 21st Century and Cooperation SellingTM. His professional presence, personal success and ability to engage his audience has earned him an excellent reputation in several industries including communications, technology, transportation, e-commerce, staffing, automotive, office automation, medical, and distribution. Kim serves on the Professional Sales Advisory Board at Ohio University. He is also a member of numerous civic and professional organizations and resides with his family in Longwood, Florida.

General Information

WORKSHOP FORMATEach program is delivered over four days, beginning on Monday morning and concluding on Thursday. Participants must attend and complete the entire program to be eligible to receive Continuing Education Units (CEU).

The institute is conducted using a variety of education and application methods to include illustrated facilitation, panel and group discussions, case study analysis and live skill practice. Participants experience practical and relevant problem solving in real life transportation management situations. These experiential individual and interdisciplinary exercises and discussions continue to be rated as valuable components of every institute.

Prior to the program, participants are encouraged to complete a survey of interests and training needs to assist facilitators in tailoring the institute content and deliverables to be most useful and valuable to everyone in attendance.

Upon the successful completion of the institute, each participant will be awarded 3.0 CEU or the equivalent of 30 Professional Development Hours (PDH).

NOMINATION/APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS AND DEADLINESInstitute participants are selected from among those nominated by AASHTO member departments and affiliates. Each location is limited to a maximum of 36 participants. Each AASHTO member department/affiliate may nominate up to 12 employees for the 2021 series of programs, but no more than six from one member department/affiliate may be enrolled in a specific institute.

Nominations should be received by CMC & Associates no later than 45 days prior to the start date of each event. Nominations received after that will be accepted on a space available basis. To nominate one or more staff members, use the form on page seven or register online at https://cvent.me/M8Lxbw TUITION PAYMENT AND REFUND POLICIESThe tuition of $1,595 per participant includes all instructional materials and courses, three lunches, four continental breakfasts, breaks and a reception. Individual participants are responsible for hotel costs, meals not included in the program tuition and transportation to and from the location site. Special room rates (conforming to the Federal Travel Regulation) have been arranged at the program hotels.

The person submitting the nominations (as designated on the nomination form) will be notified of those candidates accepted for the institute within ten days of receipt of the nominations. A tuition invoice ($1,595/participant) will then be sent to the nominator, and payment or a PO number must be received at least 30 days prior to the institute. Please note: tuition costs will be billed to the nominator, unless otherwise specified.

CANCELLATION POLICYIf written cancellation is received by CMC & Associates more than 30 days before the start of the program, a full refund, less the cost of any materials already sent and credit card fees, will be returned. If cancellation is received at least two weeks before the program start date, but less than 30 days from the start date, a 50% refund will be given. No refunds will be given for cancellations received less than two weeks prior to the program. Qualified substitutes will be permitted provided the substitutes information has been submitted to CMC & Associates in time to approve the candidate prior to the chosen institute.

COVID-19 ConsiderationsThe KU Public Management Center, in conjuction with AASHTO and ourtraining partners, is actively monitoring the incidence of COVID-19 in our2021 training locations. We are following guidance from state and localhealth departments and the CDC regarding in-person gatherings andpreventing the spread of COVID-19. The safety of our participants,instructors and staff are our top priority and we will stay apprised ofcurrent best practices and modify plans as needed.
