MESSAGE FROM THE HOD

Dr.S.Prathiba M.E.,Ph.D., Professor & HOD / EEE Loyola College of Engineering &Technology Chennai-34

From the HoD’s Desk It is indeed exalting to extend a very hearty welcome from the Department of

Electrical and Electronics Engineering of Loyola – ICAM College of Engineering and Technology

(LICET). Our department works with the motto “Nothing can be achieved without genuine effort”.

The core values of the department and motivation help the students to develop their overall

personality and make them able professionals to compete and work at a global level. The department,

as a team, has been striving hard to improve upon the quality of engineering education. In this

regard, the department has been successfully conducting various workshops, seminars and awareness

programs since its inception, to keep the faculty and students abreast with the latest developments in

the field of technical education. STROM 2k18 is a national level technical symposium organized by

our department as a knowledge sharing platform, to get updated with the latest technological

developments in the industry. ORENDA 2k18, the Department Magazine reflects the creativity and

achievements of the students of the department in different areas. It is exhilarating to congratulate

and extend my warm wishes to all the staff and student members who have made this possible with

their valuable contributions. Our department has a long-valued tradition of striving for excellence in

whatever we do. I hope, we will be able to maintain this in future too. I am also certain that our

students will prove to be an invaluable asset to any organization.

COLLEGE DAY: On the 8th College Day of our college:

Master of Ceremony was done by Rachael of I EEE along with one another student from a

different department.

Dhanvarsha of I EEE was a part of the Classical Dance

• Ms. Inba Rexy was congratulated for presenting 100% Pass during the 2016 – 2017/EVEN

Academic Toppers and Students with 100% Attendance from every class were honoured.

Siddharth of IV EEE got the Best Outgoing Student Award.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT:

1. The Students of III EEE (Batch: 2015 – 2019) accompanied by Ms. G. Annie Nancy and Ms. M.

Monisha Ann visited the Tower Testing & Research Station at Tirusulam on 19-12-2017. The

tower testing station is a special plant for testing various design for towers for transmission lines and

similar uses. A tower testing station consists of two steel stands and one or more foundations, on

which a sample of the tower can be built. The student had a clear understanding on the various tests

conducted to analysis the stability of the towers for transmission lines.

The test set up is made to conform to the design specifications and verify the adequacy of the

main components of the structure and their connections to withstand the static design loads specified

for that particular structure as an individual entity under controlled conditions. It furnishes insight

into actual stress distribution of unique configurations, fit-up verification, performance of the

structure in a deflected position and other benefits.

2. The Students of II EEE visited Doordarshan on 25.01.2018.

3. The Students of I EEE visited Sriperambathur Substation on 20.03.2018.

GUEST LECTURE: Three Guest Lectures were attended by the students of EEE within the college premises. The

topics of invited lectures are:

Digitalization of Solar Energy and Future of Fossil Fuels (11-12-2017)

Modern Warfare Scenarios (12-12-2017)

• Signal Processing in Assistive Technology – Bionic Eye (12-12-2017)

Guest Lecture – 1: Digitalization of Solar Energy and Future of Fossil Fuels

Audience: II EEE (Batch: 2016 – 2020)

The guest speaker was Dr. Abdul Azeez Mohammed Fakir who is presently the President & CEO of Power Conversion, GE Power.

His lecture unveiled the business opportunities in the area of solar energy. He also through light on

the current trends in technological growth and gave the listeners an insight on the techniques (like

learning to unlearn, Life-long learning) that one has to follow on getting placed in an industry.

Ultimately, his dynamic speech motivated the students not only to formulate the Renewables

(especially Solar) as their topic of project or Career but also inspired them to be entrepreneurs in that

field. The doubts raised by the students were clarified using simple explanations and Real-time

examples by the speaker. Guest Lecture – 2: Modern Warfare Scenarios

Audience: II EEE (Batch: 2016 – 2020) & IV EEE (Batch: 2014 – 2018)

The Resource person was Dr. Latha Christie, Associate Director & Scientist G, MTRDC,

DRDO, Ministry of Defense, Bangalore.

Notably she is a rare combination of Spirituality & Science. Her lecture though discussed mainly the

technology used in the modern warfare; she also shared her spiritual wisdom and understanding with

the participants wherever possible. The discussions on the role of information technology on the war-

field gave the participants a completely different outlook and gave a clear understanding. The

speaker clarified the doubts of the participants at the end of the lecture and even used videos to make

clear the doubts. The participants actively participated as the war techniques used during the world

wars and during the recent military missions (Surgical Mission, Iraq-Iran War, Osama Bin Laden

Attack in Afghanistan by the Americans) were discussed.

Guest Lecture – 3: Signal Processing in Assistive Technology – Bionic Eye

Audience: III EEE (Batch: 2015 – 2019)

The guest speaker Dr. Antony Louis Priyakumar is a Technical Expert who worked earlier

for Siemens and is presently a Director of a Start-up company. His varied experience as a technocrat

and as founder director of a company was a toast to the interested participants. His proficiency got

expressed during the conduct of his lecture. He conversed the latest trends used, technical challenges

faced and the science behind the design and implementation of Bionic Eye (A virtual eye of the

Blind). The lecture motivated the students to learn the Signal Processing subject (one among the

most difficult subject considered) with more interest. GUEST LECTURE 4:

A Guest Lecture titled “Electrical Engineering and Petrochemical Industry” was organised by the

Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering for the IV EEE students on 24.01.2018. The

resource person Mr. L. Saravanan is a Senior Engineer at SAIPEM.
