SAVE THE DATE!

The Second Annual Author’s Luncheon is planned for

Saturday, October 23, 2010 at the Old Ranch Country Club.

This year we will feature three women mystery writers

who live in the Southern California area: Wendy Hornsby,

whom many of you know from her column in the Grunion

Mary Orr Courtesy Our member, Louise Grifone, fell in her home and fractured 3 ribs.

She is housebound and hopefully her pain will ease. A get well card

was sent but cheery notes would perk up her spirits.

Tech Trek Update: Jean Friedrich's granddaughter, Savanah, has

been accepted in the San Jose area. Also Linda Patten's

granddaughter, Sarah, was sponsored in our branch but the Pattens

paid all of her scholarship. Great members, great grandmothers!

Birthday greetings to all June honorees. Any June brides?

HOPE. "Of all the forces that make for a better world, none is so

powerful as Hope. With hope one can think, one can work, one can dream.

If you have hope, you have everything". (Unknown)

SAVE THE DATE!

The Second Annual Author’s Luncheon is planned for Saturday, October 23, 2010 at the Old Ranch Country Club. This year we will feature three

women mystery writers who live in the Southern California area: Wendy Hornsby, whom many of you know from her column in the Grunion

Gazette and from her mystery books; Pamela Samuels-Young, who writes from her viewpoint as an attorney; and Naomi Hirahara who has based

her mystery character on her Japanese father. Three very different writers that should piqued your interest. Hopefully, you will read one or two of

their books during the summer. As you know this is our big Educational Foundation fundraiser, so start talking to your friends about attending this

event. The ticket price will remain the same as last year: $60 per person. There will be silent auction baskets and door prizes too.

CO-PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE

Patricia Ferrer & Frances Rozner

Wow! Where did this year go? It seems like just yesterday that we met together to discuss a Vision for the

future of the Branch. Here is it time to install the new officers and wish the new Board all the best as they

move forward.

In between, we were treated to amazing, informative speakers and fun social events. Philanthropically, we

outdid ourselves, raising $4855 to send 7 students to Tech Trek this coming summer, $382 for the Virginia

Gildersleeve Fund, close to $2000 for the Legal Advocacy Fund and more than $5600 for the Educational Fund,

of which over $2000 was raised through our very successful first annual Authors’ Luncheon. Our membership

rose to 129 – with our new members more engaged than in the immediate past.

The 7th STEM Conference earned recognition as one of the Top Ten AAUW CA Projects for its number of

community partnerships. Now enrolled with AAUW CA’s Special Project Fund (giving it 501(c)3 status) and

due to a longstanding relationship with one of its workshop speakers, the Conference was able to secure its

first sponsorship - $3000 from BP. With a dynamite team of volunteers, more girls participated than ever

before.

Administratively, it was a challenging year. Our Articles of Incorporation have been updated and new

Bylaws, required by AAUW, will be completed shortly. The economy took a toll on organizations everywhere.

Our Building Fund CDs income dropped precipitously, providing the impetus for us to seek alternate housing

for our needs. St. Luke’s opportunity to rent our space for much more rent accelerated our plans to move. By

June 1, our historical records will be safely stored and accessible to the public at the Historical Society of Long

Beach, and our legal records stored, for now, in a much smaller space at St. Luke’s. A classroom at the

Universalist Unitarian Church on Atherton will be the location for all of our Executive Committee and Board

meetings next year.

Our financial position will be improving. With decreased housing expenses, we should be able to fund our

expenses within the income generated. In addition, the Blust bequest of $5000 was received and will be rolled

into the Holmes/Black CD when it comes due. Out of the blue, the director of the defunct Laurelcrest School

for Girls contacted us regarding contributing its remaining assets to us. Its attorney is reviewing the 501(c)3

credentials of AAUW CA SPF. If approved, our SPF funds at AAUW CA, both STEM and Tech Trek, will

receive a significant influx of cash.

As Co-Presidents, we thank you for your faith in our leadership, and your support, as we worked through

changes that were necessary for the Branch to be able to strengthen its focus on AAUW’s mission. We are

excited about Sharon Westafer’s upcoming tenure and that of her Board - her team has an excellent blend of

experience and new member exuberance. It’s going to be a great 2010-2011!

(The Vision process started in 2009 is still in the works – it will be completed later in 2010. Frances will be

contacting the committee in July.)

contribution to this year's EF Fund.

Membership News

Membership Garden Party

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of the members who made our Membership Garden Party a success by

donating the tasty finger foods and refreshments. Prospective members and branch members enjoyed the

wonderful garden area of Kay Hudnall’s home in Signal Hill. The interesting front yard landscape and

friendly atmosphere of her garden provided a perfect setting for our party.

Dues Renewal

This year you will have the opportunity to pay your dues using a credit card. To do this, you must use a

computer to go to aauw.org. Once there, you will need to log in as a member on the Membership Services site.

If you have not done so before, you will need to create an account. Once your account is created, you will have

an ability to click on the link for paying dues. Be sure to pay the dues for National, State, and Branch, a total of

$91. You will receive an email receipt for the payment of your dues; and our Membership Treasurer will

receive an email that you have paid your dues. Paying on line should be prior to July 1st.

Should you prefer to pay using the paper dues renewal form that you received lately, be sure to return the

form with your check to Norma Grady by June 18th, 2010. Please note: Check Yes or No on the form if you

agree to receive the Vantage electronically. The more members choosing to receive the Vantage electronically,

the more savings will be generated for our budget.

We wish to thank all of the members who introduced prospective members to our branch. With your help and

advocacy for our branch, we continue to grow and stay vibrant. Have a wonderful summer!

AAUW State Convention April 30-May 2, 2010

SOAR (Significance, Outreach, Advocacy, and Reinvention) was the recurrent theme throughout the state

convention in San Ramon. Inspiring speakers included Jill Birdwhistell, PhD, Chief of Strategic Advancement

for AAUW, Kate Farrar, Director of AAUW Leadership Programs, Claire Schuster, LAF litigant, Assembly

Member Joan Buchanan, Assembly Member Fiona Ma, Assembly Member Nancy Skinner, Charlotte Newhart,

AAUW CA Public Policy Advocate and Evelyn Dilsaver, past President and CEO of Charles Schwab

Investment Management. Convention attendees were able to choose from a selection of interesting workshops

including Donors, Dollars and the AAUW CA Special Projects Fund, Membership Matters! Strategies for

Recruiting and Retention (Fay Denny, AAUW State Membership Committee, was one of the presenters),

Understanding and Exploring Social Media, From Aid to Impact: The Power of Microfinance, Working

Toward Title IX Compliance and Bullying and Cyberbullying: A Community Concern.

On Saturday evening, at the gala celebration, the State Named Gift honoree was introduced and individuals

and branches who contributed to AAUW Funds were honored. Among the honorees was the Long Beach

branch. Congratulations to Long Beach branch for being 4th in the state for LAF contributions and one of 10

branches named to the 2010 Wall of Fame for collaboration with different agencies to make the 2010 STEM

career conference a success. Thanks for all of your efforts and support in helping the branch with these

achievements!
