From Sisters to Misters

Presentation by Professor Maureen AnthonyMcAuley School of Nursing, University of Detroit Mercy

Catholic Sisters have a long tradition of caring for the sick, suffering and dying. Sisters built the first permanent hospital in the United States in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1890, and by 1915, an astounding fifty percent of hospitals in the United States were run by Catholic Sisters.

The Sisters raised money, oversaw construction, staffed and administered hospitals without financial support from the Vatican or local diocese. The availability of health insurance and safer health care practices in the second half of the twentieth century led to increased demand for hospital care. The charitable model of the past was no longer viable.

Research conducted by Dr. Maureen Anthony explored the experiences of Catholic Sisters as they transitioned leadership to lay administrators, who were predominantly men. Included in the research is interview information provided by seventy Sisters, who were the last religious administrators of the hospital system.

Join us for a presentation by AAUW member, Dr. Maureen Anthony. Bring your friends.

SUMMARY OF NOVEMBER 14TH BOARD MEETING

The meeting was held at Rhea Carey’s house. Attending were Joanne Johnson, Centie Strong, Marge Alff, Rhea Carey, Judy Florian, Mary Ellen Burke, and Sandy Stanley. Absent with notice were Marie DeLuca, Carolyn Barth and Vicki Granger.

President Johnson reported about the Leadership Conference she had attended recently and that she would be attending the regional meeting in Canton.

The following decisions were made: 1) to purchase insurance for the branch; 2) to send out e-blasts for each of the upcoming events to try to generate more participation from members.

We currently have a combined total of $26,778.68 in our branch and educational funds accounts.

Our next meeting will be held on March 11, 2019, at 10 am at Marge Alff’s home.
