Welcome to Bachelor of Arts in Economics program!

Everything we do at AB Economics program is oriented to students’ success. This is why the program is designed to producegraduates who can demonstrate expertise on economic concepts and theories necessary to understand the functioning of theeconomy for economic analysis and policy-making, develop skills in the formulation of project proposals, undertaking ofeconomic researches, solving mathematical problems and constructing economic models and perform with competence anddynamism as a productive and innovative economic player who takes the initiative to lead for good governance, economicgrowth and economic development. In line with this, one thing is certain, upon completion of the program students will beprepared and equipped with the skills and competencies needed to meet or exceed their career pathway expectations.

AB ECONOMICS PROGRAM OUTCOMES

The Bachelor of Arts in Economics is a program offered in the Lingayen Campus of PangasinanState University. This particular program is designed to provide students with an educationalbackground and experience which reflects the setting in the life of the economists in businessenterprises and government agencies. The program is grounded on the theoretical as well asapplied economics which are intended to sharpen the student’s analysis and understanding ofthe complexities of today’s economy. The students are exposed to various tools, methodologies,theories and orientations that will assist them in pursuing their careers in the field of economics.

Bachelor of Arts in Economics (AB Econ) is a four-year degree program that is designed to provide students withworking knowledge in economic concepts and skills in performing economic analysis and modelling and economic policiesnecessary to understand the functioning of both national and international economy. The program aims to give studentsan in-depth understanding of how various economic agents and institutions (consumers, firms, government and foreignsector) work in determining the economic issues and problems the society faces so as to create sound economicdecisions and possible solutions with the application of both microeconomic and macroeconomic principles, theories,and models.

The study of economics is central to the comprehensive understanding of markets, demand and supply of goods andservices, businesses, government policies, international trade issues, health, labor, banking and finance, economicgrowth and development, environment among others. This is a program that is indented for students who would wishto become analysts, researchers, advisors and economists in the public and private sectors. Graduates of the programmay work in a range of varied fields including public sector, business, finance, research and development, healthcare,real estate, human resource management, sales and marketing.

Why do most students enjoy economics? Economics is the perfect combination of numbers and words, problems andessays, calculations and interpretations. It is both an art and a science subject. Students have the opportunity to buildmodels which give insights into the real world, and then to critique these models on the basis of their assumptions.There is rarely a right answer in economics but any argument put forward must be backed up by quantitativeevidence. Students ultimately enjoy economics because it allows them to employ and develop analytical andevaluative skills.

Economics graduates are well equipped, having analytical and problem-solving skills, numerical and computer skills,as well as the ability to work well either alone or within a team. The skills, traits and attitude that will help thestudents succeed in the AB Economics course are as follows:

The employment of economists is expected to grow 6 percent from 2008 to 2018. According to the OccupationalOutlook Handbook:

Economists do a myriad of things. For example:

In business, economists often analyze economic conditions, make forecasts, offer strategic planning initiatives, collectand analyze data, predict exchange rate movements, and review regulatory policies, among other things.

In government, economists collect and analyze data, analyze international economic situations, research monetaryconditions, advise on policy, and do much more.

As private consultants, economists work with accountants, business executives, government officials, educators,financial firms, labor unions, state and local governments, and others.

In May 2008, the median annual wage and salary earnings of economists were $83,590. The middle 50 percent earnedbetween $59,390 and $113,590. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $44,050, and the highest 10 percent earnedmore than $149,110. In March 2009, the average annual salary for economists employed by the federal governmentwas $108,010. Starting salaries were higher in selected geographical areas where the prevailing local pay was higher.

WHAT AWAITS YOU AS AN ECONOMICS MAJOR?

One of the attractive things about studying economics is that you will acquire many of the skillsemployers highly value. First, you will have the quantitative skills that are important in many businessand government positions. Second, you will acquire the writing skills necessary in almost all lines ofwork. Third, and perhaps most importantly, you will develop the thinking skills that almost allemployers agree are critical to success.

A study published in the 1998 edition of the Journal of Economic Education ranked economics majorsas having the highest average scores on the Law School Admission Test LSAT). Also, consider thewords of the Royal Economic Society:

Keep in mind, too, that economics is one of the most popular majors at some of the most respecteduniversities in the country. As of this writing, economics is the top major at Harvard, Princeton,Columbia, Stanford, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Chicago. Mission

The mission of Pangasinan State University Library is to provide information resources and services to faculty, students, researchersand administrative staff in support of the University instructional and scholarly inquiry that will promote liberal learning, education forservices, training for careers and development of lifelong learning skills.

Goals

■ To develop and manage the collections that are relevant to the University’s curricular programs and responsive to the needs of■ students, faculty, researchers and administrative staff.■ To organize and preserve information resources that support the research, instruction, and curriculum of the University.■ To support and promote the use of information resources by providing references and information services that meet the■ information needs of the library users.■ To provide access to information stored in books and periodicals including databases worldwide distributed in print and

electronically.■ To increase the level of funding available in the library by participating in fundraising and grant seeking activities

Objectives

■ To be more responsive to the academic needs and research demands of the students and faculty of the University.■ To provide a strong support in the instructional programs of the University.■ To provide and organize print and non-print collections used in the instructional and research programs of the University.■ To provide physical facilities and equipment that will make possible the most effective use of the library.

Library Rules and Regulations

■ The Library ID card serves as the pass in the use of the library and its resources. The NO LIBRARY ID, NO ENTRY is strictly enforced.■ The library ID card is presented upon entrance and every time a book or material is borrowed.■ The library ID card is nontransferable. Library privilege should be exercised personally. Library ID’s should not be used by anyone

except the student whose picture and name appears on the card. The owner of the ID card is responsible for all materials borrowedon it.

■ The Library ID card is good for four to five years, to be validated every semester/ term. Lost Library ID card must be reportedimmediately to the Librarian. A replacement Library ID may be issued one week after the report of loss and upon payment of thecost of the card.

■ Transferees and graduating students should surrender their library ID cards upon issuance of clearance by the Librarian.

Lending Policies

■ No library resources of any kind may be taken from the library by any person unless a record of withdrawal is made thereof. Any persondrawing a book from the library or having it charged against him for use is held accountable for it until its return.

■ General references like dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, etc. are to be used inside the library only. However, photocopying of suchmaterials is allowed.

■ Reserved books and single-copy books are also to be used inside the library only. They are borrowed on an hourly basis and may bephotocopied.

■ Theses are for reading room use only Photocopying is not allowed. If the undergraduate collection is deemed inadequate for researchpurposes, the graduate thesis/dissertation collection may be utilized.

■ Periodicals are used in the library only. They may be photocopied.■ Books in the General Circulation may be borrowed for home/overnight use. As a general rule, a book for home use is loaned from 3:00

P.M. and should be returned on or before 9:00 A.M. the following class day.■ Students may borrow one book for overnight use from Mondays thru Thursdays and two books of different titles on weekends.■ Books may be renewed another day. However, the book must be presented physically before it can be borrowed again.■ Interlibrary use of resources is practiced among the Libraries in the University. Visiting students should present, together with their■ University ID, a referral letter from the Librarian of their College of origin. These students are given room-use privilege only.

Engl 101 - Study and Thinking Skills This course aims to develop the freshmen college student’s communicative and thinkingskills for academic study; for them to be proficient in doing the required tasks in theircontent subjects. They will also be armed with skills in using the resources in the librarywhich is considered as the storehouse of knowledge, and be able to download referencematerials through the use of the internet since students today could easily accessinformation through the web.

Engl 102 - Speech Communication with Debate The course deals with the nature, importance, and functions of communication. It in-cludes the study of phonemics, mechanics, elements, and principles of spoken English foreffective speech communication for various situations.

Fil 102 - Pagbasa at Pagsulat Tungo sa Pananaliksik Ang kursong ito ay magbibigay pokus sa kasanayan sa pagbasa at pagsulat bilangnapakahalagang kasangkapan sa pagkatuto. Itinuturo sa kursong ito ang mga istratehiyasa pagbasa ng iba’t ibang genre ng mga tekstong nakasulat. Lilinangin din ang mgakasanayan sa pang-unawa, lalo na ang kritikal na pang-unawa, gayon din ang kasanayan sapagsulat ng iba’t ibang sulating akademiko, maka-agham, ukol sa humanidades, kasama anggawain sa pananaliksik sa agham panlipunan at agham teknolohiya.

Soc Sci 101 - Philippine History This course is an introductory course on the history and culture of the Filipino people. Itis designed to give students basic knowledge about their country and people. The coursecombines the chronological and topical approaches, where the major historic periods aretreated in sequential order. However, within each period the discussion will proceedaccording to topics.

Soc Sci 102 - General Psychology This course is a broad coverage of the conceptual and empirical foundations of psy-chology in its main fields. The discussion of the theories, concepts, and empirical findingsfocuses on complex human behavior: how and why man thinks, feels, and behaves the wayhe does, how he acts and interacts with others, and why and how he becomes the uniqueindividual that he is.

Soc Sci 103 - Politics and Governance with Philippine Constitution This course deals with the nature and scope of Politics, State, Government and PhilippineConstitution. It covers the establishment and classification of government and discussesthe characteristics of sovereignty, the rights and obligations of the State and the rights andobligations of its citizens.
