Welcome!Dear friends of Abama, Welcome to our 8th Abama Magazine. Today more than ever I would like to celebrate and share with you our special gratitude towards all the owners that form part of our fantastic community of Abama residents. Since our start in 2011, we have grown into a community of more than 200 families of 33 different nationalities that have put their trust in our project and invested in 250 properties on the resort gounds. We pride ourselves in being a top international project and we will continue working in this vein. Of all our channels of communication, I can say that, without a doubt, our owners are by far our best and most important ambassadors. That is why we created the Prestige Owners’ Club: to continue offering them the best services and responding to all their needs. It is no coincidence that the happiness of our residents goes hand in hand with good business. This has been another great year for Abama Luxury Residences. We will reach our projected yearly sales objectives, and we have completely sold out of our developments at Bellevue, Las Casas del Lago and the first phase of Las Villas del Tenis. We are also happy to announce that we have begun construction on our latest development, Los Jardines de Abama, and the highly anticipated Abama Plaza. Hoy me gustaría celebrar y compartir nuestro especial agradecimiento a todos los propietarios que forman parte de nuestra fantástica comunidad residencial. Desde 2011, nuestra comunidad ha crecido hasta estar conformada por más de 200 familias de 33 nacionalidades que han depositado su confianza en nuestro proyecto al invertir en 250 propiedades. Porque estamos orgullosos de nuestro ambicioso proyecto internacional, continuaremos trabajando para consolidarlo. De entre todos nuestros canales de comunicación, sin duda nuestros propietarios son nuestros mejores embajadores. Josefa Mesa, recientemente nombrada nueva alcaldesa de Guía de Isora, destaca por su trayectoria polifacética, tanto dentro como fuera de la administración local. Antes de entrar en el Ayuntamiento de Guía de Isora en 1995, trabajó como maestra de secundaria y en el sector hotelero. Ya en el consistorio, dirigió durante veinte años el Departamento de Servicios Sociales, Educación, Cultura y Participación Ciudadana, hasta que asumió el Departamento de Juventud, Igualdad y Patrimonio Cultural para el Cabildo de Tenerife en 2015. Ahora, en 2019, ha vuelto a Guía de Isora para convertirse en la nueva alcaldesa.

Acaba de ser nombrada alcaldesa de Guía de Isora, pero tiene una gran experiencia en otros campos de la gestión municipal, ¿cómo ha visto cambiar el municipio en este tiempo?

En primer lugar, me gustaría aprovechar para comentar aquí que es un honor para mí ser la alcaldesa de Guía de Isora y que trabajaré intensamente para seguir mejorando este municipio. Un municipio que se ha ido transformando de manera radical en los últimos años, tanto a nivel de infraestructuras como en otras grandes mejoras que son disfrutadas por todas las personas. Guia de Isora está llena de importantes atractivos por desarrollar y creo firmemente que su crecimiento económico y social será imparable.

¿Cuáles serán las prioridades de su gestión para los próximos meses?

Por una parte, se centrarán en impulsar algunos de los proyectos turísticos más importantes en el marco de la apuesta por un turismo de calidad, un turismo de 5 estrellas lujo. La intención con todos ellos es dar más valor a Guía de Isora como destino. Por otra parte, queremos mejorar la atención al ciudadano, a través de servicios de cercanía y eficacia. Y, por supuesto, además, vamos a seguir impulsando las diferentes mejoras necesarias en cada pueblo.

Josefa Mesa, recently named Guía de Isora’s new mayor, has had a multifaceted career as well as ample experience in local government. She worked as a secondary school teacher and in the hotel sector before joining the Guía de Isora administration in 1995. For twenty years she headed the department of Social Services, Education, Culture and Citizen Participation, until she became the head of the department of Youth, Equality, and Cultural Heritage for the Cabildo de Tenerife in 2015. Now, in 2019, she has come back to Guía de Isora to take on her new responsibilities as mayor.

You have recently been named the mayor of Guía de Isora, but you have ample management experience in other government posts over the past several decades. How have you seen the municipality change over time?

First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to say that it is an honor for me to be named the mayor of Guía de Isora, and I will work intensely to continue improving this municipality. This is a place that has transformed radically over the past few years, both in terms of infrastructure and other great improvements that everyone enjoys. Guía de Isora is full of important attractions to be developed, and I believe fervently that its economic and social growth will be unstoppable.

What will be your management priorities over the coming months?

On one hand, they will center on supporting some of the priority tourism projects in our effort to foment quality tourism; 5-star luxury tourism. Our intention is to raise the profile of Guía de Isora as a destination. On the other hand, we will be improving our residents’ lives by focusing on local and efficient services. And of course we will continue to push the various improvements in individual villages.

There is a medium-term project under way, the Port of Fonsalía, that will give Guía de Isora the capacity to accommodate large yachts and ships. It will also have a commercial area and provide another connection point to La Gomera, La Pal-ma, and El Hierro. How do you think this project will affect the future of Guía de Isora and its posi-tioning as a tourism and residential destination?

This is a project we have been waiting for for years. The Government of the Canary Islands wants to implement it in line with the directives of the Ministry of the Environment. I am sure that it will improve our connections with the western islands and therefore strengthen tourism in our municipality.

What do other future projections of the area look like? What kind of development can we expect?

The development of the Port is related to land dedicated to logistical support. All the required services related to this support will be developed there, as well as the required improvements to transport, roads, etc. in order to access it.

Abama Resort is one of the developments that has long believed, since its inauguration in 2005, in the potential of Guía de Isora. What does the resort contribute to the social and economic dy-namics of the area?

A project like this benefits the municipality in terms of employment, commerce, services, and more. Since its establishment, Abama has been an engine for change in Guía de Isora. Besides the symbolic weight of a residential project with its characteristics, its installation included a large hotel and a golf course that raised international interest in our municipality.

A medio plazo, tenemos el proyecto del Puerto de la Fonsalía, ¿cómo cree que afectará -con su capacidad para acoger grandes yates, su zona comercial y sus conexiones con La Gomera, La Palma y el Hierro- al futuro de Guía de Isora y a su posicionamiento como destino turístico y residencial?

Es un proyecto que llevamos años esperando. Ahora, sabemos que el Gobierno de Canarias quiere impulsarlo según las condiciones del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente. Desde luego, estoy segura de que ayudará a mejorar nuestras conexiones con las islas occidentales y, por tanto, potenciará el desarrollo de nuestro municipio.

¿Qué proyección de futuro se prevé para la zona? ¿Cómo será su desarrollo?

El proyecto del puerto está en relación con el suelo destinado a apoyo logístico. Allí se van a desarrollar los servicios necesarios en ese sentido, además, por supuesto, de las mejoras de comunicación necesarias para su accesibilidad.

Desde su inauguración en 2005, Abama Resort ha sido uno de los equipamientos que, tradi-cionalmente, más ha confiado en el potencial de Guía de Isora, ¿qué significa el complejo para el entorno social y económico de la zona?

Un proyecto como este beneficia y repercute al municipio desde el punto de vista del empleo, del comercio, de los servicios… Desde su nacimiento, Abama supuso un nuevo impulso para Guía de Isora. Aparte del gran contenido simbólico de un proyecto residencial de sus características, su instalación significó poder contar con un gran hotel y un campo de golf que aumentaron el interés internacional por nuestro municipio.

What role do residential communities like Abama play in the development of the municipality in the long term?

Residential communities like this one lead to orderly growth because they require you to plan in a way that assures that the necessary services will be provided to new residents, whether they plan to live in Guía de Isora full time or only part of the year.

Abama is now a stable community with many fam-ilies that have established part-time residence here. What role does this part of the population play in planning at the government level?

Any planning we do must of course take these families and their needs into account. This in terms of both municipal services and the commitment to continue making Guía de Isora an ideal place to live.

¿Qué papel tienen las comunidades residenciales como Abama en el diseño del municipio a largo plazo?

Las zonas residenciales suponen un crecimiento ordenado ya que obligan a llevar a cabo una planificación que asegure que se seguirán ofreciendo los servicios necesarios a los nuevos vecinos, tanto a los que eligen Guía de Isora para establecer su residencia, como a los que pasan aquí una parte del año.

Abama es ya una comunidad estable con famil-ias que han establecido aquí su residencia tem-poral, ¿cómo se gobierna pensando también en la importancia de esta parte de la población?

Cualquier planificación obliga a tener en cuenta a esas familias y sus necesidades. No sólo en lo que a los servicios municipales se refiere, sino también en el compromiso de seguir trabajando en un lugar que sea ideal para vivir.

Having such an international group of residents has many perks, both for Abama and for our residents themselves. Case in point, our newly established collaborations with Aspria, one of Europe’s finest wellness club and fitness center groups. The company originated in Belgium but now has several locations in Germany and northern Italy, and it’s an established brand that offers members premium facilities and services in idyllic settings.

Abama Luxury Residences established a working relationship with Aspria Belgium and Aspria Germany this year, offering discounts on Club memberships to our owners who hail from those two countries. Meanwhile, Aspria members enjoy preferential rates here at Abama when they visit. We also recently participated in an Aspria golf tournament in Brussels, sponsoring a prize for their winner’s raffle: two nights at Las Terrazas de Abama. Over 70 people participated in the tournament and we can’t wait to welcome the lucky winners!

We’re delighted to welcome Jose Miguel Mesa back into the Abama family as our new Manager of Brokers and International Events. He joined us this fall, and he’s already made incredible strides in tightening Abama’s connections to our markets all over Europe. The expertise that he will bring to this position is most welcome, but in addition, his joining our team is a sweet homecoming. He comes to us having worked most recently in public service, but before his time in government, he worked at The Ritz-Carlton, Abama, getting his first taste of our wonderful resort at the beginning of his career. We are delighted that he has chosen to rejoin us and know that he will bring his international skills to the fore to advance Abama’s presence throughout Europe.

Termina el año, y con él, un nuevo éxito en ventas. Este 2019 lanzamos la tercera fase de Bellevue, ganadora del premio a las Mejores Casas de Nueva Construcción de la Década otorgado por la Asociación de Arquitectos de Tenerife en 2018, y, rápidamente, vendimos las seis unidades que se habían lanzado. Además, la primera fase de nuestras casas vacacionales Las Villas del Tenis también se ha agotado, principalmente, a manos de compradores que ya eran residentes de Abama. Another year has passed, and with it another successful year of home sales at Abama. This year we launched our third phase of Bellevue, winner of Best New-Build Homes of the decade from the Association of Architects of Tenerife in 2018, and promptly sold all 6 homes. The first phase of our Villas del Tenis holiday villas have also sold out, with a concentration of buyers who were already previous residents of Abama. Abama has been honored with several awards this year which have had great impact within our various European markets. Bellevue Magazine, a German luxury lifestyle publication that is also the largest real estate magazine in Europe, named Abama Best Resort of 2019. This entity’s objectives include supporting projects and research that foment positive change in Puerto de la Cruz, are geared towards sustainable management policies, and support job training for locals as well as cultural projects of significance.

The year was 2011. My wife and I were supposed to go sailing with friends in Croatia, but the cruise was unexpectedly cancelled. But I had already taken a week off work, so we asked a travel agency to propose another destination. We told them we didn’t care where, but it had to be somewhere beautiful, because it was September, and the weather in Belgium was absolutely terrible. The agency came back to us: Tenerife. Tenerife? My wife and I had never even considered it. But they said the climate was good, so off we went on a little adventure.

They booked us at a hotel on the island that was nice, with an enormous pool, but there was no beach. So we took the car out one day to explore. We drove along the coast and suddenly this arresting terra cotta building appeared on the horizon. We didn’t know if it was a hotel or apartments or what, but we went to investigate. It turned out to be the Abama hotel, of course, and we took a tour. It was very beautiful, everything very nice, and then at the end, by pure accident, a woman caught our eye, sitting on a chair in the lobby underneath a poster of a residence.

She asked if we were interested in hearing about the residential project that had just launched. She showed us some floorplans, then told us that she could show us the location as well. So she took us up in a car. You have to understand, there was absolutely nothing here at the time. [frase eliminada] All rubble. It was terrible! But they had built a kind of scaffolding so that you could walk up and see what the views would be like.

We went up to the level of the first floor. You could see the hotel, the water, the golf course just in front. It was stunning. My wife was particularly seduced by La Gomera being directly opposite the island. And then we got back in the car and went up the hill even further to see the model homes. They didn’t look like

Así que un día cogimos el coche y nos pusimos a explorar. Recorrimos la costa y, de repente, este deslumbrante edificio de terracota apareció en el horizonte. No sabíamos si era un hotel, apartamentos o qué, pero fuimos a investigar. Resultó ser el hotel de Abama, por supuesto, así que iniciamos el tour. Todo era muy hermoso y acogedor y, de repente, por casualidad, nos fijamos en una mujer sentada en el vestíbulo debajo de un cartel donde se veía una residencia. cuando entramos, era como el interior de un hotel. Eran magníficas, hermosas. Eso fue todo lo que hicimos ese día. Le dimos las gracias a la señora y nos fuimos. Pero comenzamos a pensar… Al día siguiente, mi esposa y yo volvimos a las 10 de la mañana con un firme propósito: escuchar los aviones. Muchos destinos vacacionales tienen 50 vuelos que llegan por la mañana y otros 50 por la tarde. Pero no escuchamos nada. Silencio. Al mediodía, ya estábamos firmando. No había planeado comprar nada fuera de Bélgica; de hecho, no estaba buscando propiedades en absoluto. Pero cuando descubrimos Abama, queríamos quedarnos aquí. Eso fue en septiembre de 2011. No tuvimos las llaves hasta abril de 2015. Pero cuando llegamos, todo en esta fila de propiedades se había vendido. Before the very first Owners’ Cup, the Abama Luxury Residences team had asked me if I could speak on behalf of the owners. I said I really wasn’t the best person because I didn’t speak Spanish, but then at the Gala Dinner I was unexpectedly called up onstage and announced as the President of the Residents’ Community. It wasn’t the case at the time! But then in February of 2016 the first Board of Residents was elected and I did become one of the four representatives. It wasn’t easy, especially at the beginning, and there were a number of issues that had to be attended to. But the resort has always tried to work together with us, and bit by bit the problems were resolved.

For us, our experience at Abama has really gone from pleasant surprise to pleasant surprise. We saw the views originally from the scaffolding, but we didn’t know how the construction was going to turn out. Well, it turned out to be of excellent quality. And so our trust was rewarded. It’s been the same with the staff here as well. They have always been friendly and helpful and responded quickly to any problem that has arisen. And then when we have had particular needs for custom furniture or something like that, it has turned out that there were professionals on the island that are some of the best in the country. Another thing that was extremely attractive at the beginning was the idea that these homes already came furnished. With a second home, it is a great relief to have that taken care of, but we couldn’t believe that they offered the service. It was a wonderful surprise. We were perhaps a bit concerned that we wouldn’t be able to find, here in Spain, some of the things that we were used to, but it has been good discovery after good discovery.

Al final, resultó ser de excelente calidad. Y así nuestra confianza se vio recompensada. Lo mismo ocurrió con el personal... Siempre han sido amables y serviciales y han resuelto rápidamente cualquier contratiempo. Más tarde, cuando necesitamos muebles a medida o cuestiones similares descubrimos que había profesionales en la isla que están considerados de los mejores del país. Otra ventaja muy atractiva al principio fue el hecho de que estas casas viniesen amuebladas. Algo que se agradece cuando compras una segunda vivienda pero que no nos acabábamos de creer. Fue una sorpresa maravillosa. Quizás temíamos no poder encontrar, aquí en España, algunas de las comodidades a las que estábamos acostumbrados, pero ha sido una sorpresa tras otra.

much from the outside, but when we walked in, it was like the interior of the hotel. They were magnificent, beautiful. That was all we did that day. We thanked the woman and left. But we were thinking.

The next day, my wife and I came back at 10am for one purpose: to listen for airplanes. Lots of holiday destinations have 50 flights that arrive in the morning and another 50 in the afternoon. But we didn’t hear anything. Silence. And by noon that same day, I was signing. I hadn’t been looking to buy anything outside Belgium; in fact, I wasn’t looking for property at all. But when I saw Abama, I wanted to be here.

That was September of 2011. We didn’t finally get the keys until April of 2015. But by the time we arrived, everything in this row had been sold. At a certain point after we bought, one of my daughters asked if it wouldn’t be possible to add another bedroom to the apartment. With four grandchildren and two additional families, three bedrooms was too small. And the architects were very accommodating. We got the additional bedroom, and they were helpful and attentive with every issue we had during the construction. They also had a lot of practical advice that has served us well. I didn’t want to



Playa San Juan has been one of the great pluses for us as well, and we go there often. We have found delicious bakeries like 100% Pan and deli shops, the market is wonderful, the fresh flowers a revelation; really, they have it all. We haven’t yet done an excursion to La Gomera, but I’ve heard that for golfers it’s great because the course there is beautiful as well. The boat ride is only half an hour. And there are so many walking routes around the Teide that take a day or a half a day, and incredibly beautiful.

When we bought here we didn’t know anyone. In 2014, before we were able to move into the apartment, we began to meet up in Belgium with some of the other Belgians that had purchased apartments. So that was a good introduction. We talked about construction, about the resort, and by the time we moved here we already had a bit of a community. There are a lot of flights here from Belgium, and they have added even more since we purchased the apartment. And there are also flights from Eindhoven in the Netherlands and now from Lille in France.

Seeing how the community has grown has been interesting. We’ve been here long enough now, some of us, to even see movement within the properties. One of our neighbors has already sold his apartment in Las Terrazas, for more than he bought it, and purchased a Villas del Tenis instead. We meet up with our neighbors, we see other owners at the pool… We all tend to retire to our homes; after all, this is very much a place of repose for most residents. But it’s a very agreeable life and it’s nice to see the familiar kind faces around the resort. It’s a place that always feels like coming home.

Playa San Juan ha sido otro gran descubrimiento para nosotros. Vamos con mucha frecuencia. Allí hemos encontrado deliciosas panaderías como 100% Pan y tiendas de delicatessen, un mercado maravilloso, las flores frescas son una revelación… Realmente, lo tienen todo. Todavía no hemos hecho una excursión a La Gomera, pero he oído que para los golfistas es genial porque el campo también es fabuloso. El viaje en barco dura solo media hora. Y hay tantas rutas de senderismo por el Teide para pasar un día o media jornada… Son realmente maravillosas.

Cuando compramos aquí no conocíamos a nadie. En 2014, antes de mudarnos al apartamento, comenzamos a reunirnos en Bélgica con algunos de los compatriotas que también habían comprado apartamentos. Fue una buena carta de presentación. Hablamos sobre la construcción, sobre el complejo y, cuando nos mudamos aquí, ya habíamos formado una pequeña comunidad. Hay muchos vuelos desde Bélgica y han añadido aún más desde que compramos el apartamento. También hay vuelos desde Eindhoven en los Países Bajos y ahora desde Lille en Francia.

Ver cómo ha crecido la comunidad resulta muy interesante. A algunos nos ha dado tiempo incluso a ver movimientos. Uno de nuestros vecinos ya ha vendido su apartamento en Las Terrazas -más caro de lo que lo compró- y se ha hecho con otro en Las Villas del Tenis. Nos reunimos con nuestros vecinos, vemos a otros propietarios en la piscina ... Todos tendemos a retirarnos a nuestras casas porque, al final, este es un lugar de descanso para la mayoría de los residentes pero, al mismo tiempo, es una vida muy agradable y te complace reencontrarte una y otra vez con las mismas caras amables y familiares. Es un lugar en el que siempre te sientes como en casa.

A community is much more than just a residential complex, and that’s why, for almost a year now, Abama’s heart has been beating to the rhythm of The Abama Prestige Owners’ Club. Directed by our Owners Relations Manager, Cristina Pereira, our program of social activities keeps growing. The objective is not only to get the best out of our complex’s wonderful facilities, but also to experience the wonders of a natural paradise like Tenerife and the area of Costa Adeje.

From culinary meetups at the warm ovens of Martín Berasategui’s Melvin, to catamaran excursions, to nature and cultural routes through the Canary Islands, Pereira remains motivated every day to seduce our owners with activities and ideas that align with their interests. “The Owners’ Club has been a great opportunity for entertainment and networking for our more active residents,” explains Pereira. “At Abama, we know that many people use their days here to disconnect and rest, but there are plenty of owners that love proposals for new activities or events happening on the island.”

This year the initiative has already enjoyed some successful ventures, including the cooking workshop “El patudo canario”, which took advantage of red tuna being in season in the spring to introduce residents to some great recipes including this delicious fish. Cocktail workshops, Pilates classes, and excursions in the area are some of the other activities that have brought together our residents over the past few months to experience the Abama lifestyle.

Cuando en 2011 se lanzaron Las Terrazas, comprar una propiedad inmobiliaria en Abama fue un verdadero acto de fe para muchos de nuestros primeros residentes. When Las Terrazas launched in 2011, buying a property at Abama was a leap of faith for many of our first owners. With acres of empty terrain and all the apartments yet to be built, they had to trust that they would receive what was promised: luxury apartments with unparalleled views of the Atlantic, and a set of services and amenities that would meet their every need.

Diego Dato and his team work with our residents to plan and execute their events to the owners’ exact specifications, complete with the perfect wine pairings from our expert sommelier. The cocktail menu at the pool bar has greatly expanded and offers most of the most popular drinks in the world, as well as a full set of frozen beverages that will remind you you’re on an island paradise in the middle of winter. With nearly 200 families now calling Abama home, our residences are starting to feel like a true community. And like any community, as it has grown, so too have its social, logistical, and leisure needs. It’s fortuitous timing, then, to announce that the construction of Plaza Abama, the new social hub of our residences, is well underway.

The community center is located at the heart of our complex, able to serve the needs of all our homes, from Los Jardines to Atalayas to Bellevue, our custom villas, and Las Villas del Tenis. The facilities will house the social club of Los Jardines and Las Villas del Tenis, but there will also be common areas including a pool and pool bar, underground parking, a Wellness Area, and two restaurants.

There are plenty of things to make you fall in love with Costa Adeje and Tenerife, including the incredible landscapes, the warmth of the people, the rich culinary culture, and of course, the expanse of the ocean. But there’s something else that those who wake up day after day in Guía de Isora have experienced, too: the truly spectacular and unparalleled night sky that blankets and entrances our residential community.

Inspired by this extraordinary firmament brimming with stars, this year our Owners’ Cup nº 6 paid homage to the Abama sky with our program “Beyond the Stars”. In a weekend that blended education, entertainment, and lots and lots of golf, our owners were able to learn some facts about a sky that, touched by the Teide and the Cumbres of Tenerife, has obtained a Starlight certification for its privileged astronomical observation points.

With the inestimable collaboration of Caja Siete, AMV Construcciones, Grupo Pagoda and its firm ORIS, Chivite, El Gusto por el Vino, Taittinger, De Cotta Law, Acciona, Rivercan, and Eva Divine, our now classic Owners’ Cup weekend gave us another opportunity to share and enjoy our Abama paradise at its most social and entertaining.

Como cada año, el programa comenzó el viernes con el torneo de golf Texas Scramble. Un total de 72 jugadores salieron temprano para enfrentarse a los 18 hoyos del campo de Dave Thomas, considerado el mejor de las Islas Canarias por el prestigioso portal Leading Courses. Enhorabuena a nuestros ganadores, Barbra Navarro y Alfonso Grijalva de Cal; a los merecedores del segundo puesto, Eamonn Brett y Donnacha O’Brian; y a Vadim de Groove y Charlotte Hooft, que quedaron en tercera posición. En un día radiante en el que el sol iluminó cada rincón de nuestro desafiante recorrido, los jugadores disfrutaron de deliciosos snacks proporcionados por nuestros patrocinadores en los Hoyos 1 y 10, y protagonizaron una jornada de sana competición entre vecinos.

As every year, our Owners' Cup kicked off on Friday with the pairs Texas Scramble golf tournament. A total of 72 players set out early to take on the 18 holes of Dave Thomas’s course, considered the best in the Canary Islands by the prestigious web portal Leading Courses. Congratulations to our winners, Barbra Navarro and Alfonso Grijalva de Cal; our second-place team, Eamonn Brett and Donnacha O’Brian; and Vadim de Groove and Charlotte Hooft, who came in third! Helped along by some wonderful sunshine that lit up every nook and cranny of our challenging course, the players enjoyed some snacks at Holes 1 and 10 provided by our sponsors, and made the competition a friendly one among neighbors.

El viernes por la noche, un pequeño grupo de intrépidos propietarios se dirigió al Mirador de Chirche, reconvertido en un salón de eventos por el equipo del Abama Prestige Owners’ Club en colaboración con el Ayuntamiento de Guía de Isora, específicamente la Concejalía de Turismo y Cultura, a quien debemos nuestro más profundo agradecimiento. Bajo la tutela de la arqueóloga Beatriz Gallego y el fotógrafo especialista en el espacio profundo Emilio Rivera, nuestros residentes descubrieron la relación que existe entre los pueblos aborígenes de la isla y las estrellas, y disfrutaron del trabajo realizado por Rivera en los distintos yacimientos arqueológicos repartidos por el archipiélago. El evento concluyó con un taller de observación astronómica en el mirador que se reveló como un punto estratégico desde el que vislumbrar las aldeas de Chirche y Aripe y el Monumento Natural de la Montaña Tejina, un lugar declarado de Interés del Patrimonio Cultural.

Friday evening a small group of intrepid owners set out for the Chirche Lookout, converted into an event venue by the Abama Prestige Owners’ Club team in collaboration with the Ayuntamiento of Guía de Isora, specifically the Concejalia de Turismo y Cultura, to whom we owe our profound thanks. Under the expert tutelage of archaeologist Beatriz Gallego and deep-space specialist photographer Emilio Rivera, our residents learned much about the relationship between the aboriginal peoples of the island and the stars, and enjoyed the work done by Rivera in archaeological sites around the archipelago. The event concluded with an astronomical observation workshop that highlighted the extraordinary views from the lookout as a strategic point from which one can glimpse the hamlets of Chirche and Aripe and the Tejina Mountain Natural Monument, a place declared to be of Cultural Heritage Interest.

The plethora of stars at Chirche was the perfect entrée to our Saturday Awards Dinner celebration. It was the shining beacon of the weekend, a pure celebration of the stars that appear overhead at night and those that grace the Earth. Every detail came together to create a magical experience, from the incredible centerpieces by floral artist Carlos Curbelo to the tables named after constellations. Melvin restaurant, by Martín Berasategui, was responsible for the exquisite meal that our owners enjoyed, and The Mahoney Soul Band accompanied us as we danced until late into the evening.

It was a brilliant weekend, surrounded by stars, that left us, as always, wanting even more. AN INTERVIEW WITH NEW DIRECTOR BRENDAN BREEN

Tras haber dirigido con éxito Abama Golf, Brendan Breen está listo para asumir un nuevo desafío: el crecimiento de nuestro Centro de Tenis. Provisto de las mejores vistas que cualquier complejo de tenis en el continente podría desear y con instalaciones profesionales que son objeto de deseo en todo el mundo, al Centro de Tenis Abama se le presentan emocionantes planes de futuro.

Se ha convertido en el director del Centro de Tenis Abama hace tan solo unos meses. ¿Cuáles son sus mayores retos a medio y largo plazo?

Para empezar, centramos nuestros esfuerzos en dar un "lavado de cara" a las instalaciones. Porque no habían recibido la atención debida por un largo periodo de tiempo, era esencial que invirtiéramos en los jardines y en mantenimiento para preservar la imagen de lo que es Abama Resort. A largo plazo, nuestro objetivo es seguir mejorando las instalaciones de tenis.

¿Cómo cree que puede ayudarle su experiencia en Abama Golf a afrontar estas nuevas responsabilidades?

La experiencia que llevé en su día a Abama Golf la trasladaré con la misma energía a Abama Tenis. Mi objetivo principal es proporcionar un buen servicio a todos nuestros huéspedes. Con esto en mente, nos hemos concentrado en implementar un nuevo sistema de reservas, hemos abierto un área de recepción a tiempo completo y también una pequeña tienda donde comprar raquetas o equipación de tenis.

With years of directing the successful Abama Golf under his belt, Brendan Breen is ready to take on a new challenge: the development of our Tennis Center. Already boasting professional installations and the best views of any tennis complex on the continent, the Abama Tennis Center has exciting plans on the horizon.

You became the director of the Abama Tennis Center just a few months ago. What are the biggest challenges you face in the medium and long term?

Initially, we concentrated our efforts on giving a “face lift” to the facilities. It was clear that they had not been well cared for during a long period of time and it was essential that we invested in the gardens and maintenance of the facilities in keeping with the image of what the Abama Resort is. In the long term, our objective is to develop the tennis facilities even more.

How do you think your experience running Abama Golf will help you in this new set of responsibilities?

The experience that I have brought to Abama Golf will be implemented with the same energy at Abama Tennis. My principal aim is to provide a good customer service for all our guests. With this in mind, we concentrated on implementing a new office reservation system, we opened a full time reception area, and we also now have a small tennis boutique with sales of racquets and apparel.

What plans do you have for the coming months? How will we see the Center change under your direction?

Since we took over the facilities in May 2019, as I have mentioned, we have implemented a more structured system in the reservation process. We have full-time personnel 7 days a week managing the reception, reservations and the boutique. In addition to the court bookings and tennis lessons, we also now provide additional services of racquet re-stringing and re-grips.

What do you think are the strongest advantages of Abama’s facilities for this sport?

From the moment a client enters the Abama Resort, they cannot but be impressed. The resort boasts high-quality hotel accommodation, a superb gastronomic choice of restaurants, a championship golf course and also excellent tennis facilities which are in keeping with the rest of the resort.

What’s the typical user of the Tennis Center like? Do you have many families?

The guests who enjoy our facilities are both adults and children alike, depending on the time of year. During the peak school holiday periods (Christmas, Easter, summer) we tend to have many families staying in the resort and, besides the adult' and children's tennis camps which we run during these periods, many families rent courts to play together. During the rest of the year we tend to have mainly adult guests using the facilities.

Abama is well known for its golf course, but the Tennis Center is a fully professional facility as well. How are you working to position the Center in this respect and gain a higher profile?

What many people might not realise is that our tennis facilities are pretty well known in Europe. In the past, we have celebrated events and have had tennis celebrities visit the resort, including Bjorn Borg, Michael Stitch, Pat Cash, Emilio Sanchez, and Jeremy Bates. In the medium to long term, we will try to further develop our tennis academy and to also host international tournaments.

¿Qué planes tiene para los próximos meses? ¿Cómo veremos evolucionar el Centro bajo su administración?

Como acabo de mencionar, desde que asumimos las instalaciones en mayo de 2019 hemos implementado un sistema más estructurado para efectuar las reservas. Contamos con personal a tiempo completo los 7 días de la semana para gestionar la recepción, las reservas y la boutique. Además de las reservas en la cancha y las clases de tenis, ahora también brindamos servicios adicionales como el re-encordado o la mejora del agarre de raquetas.

¿Cuáles cree que son las principales ventajas que ofrecen las instalaciones de Abama para practicar este deporte?

Desde el momento en que un cliente entra en Abama Resort, no puede dejar de sorprenderse. El complejo cuenta con alojamientos de alta calidad, una excelente oferta gastronómica en una amplia gama de restaurantes, un campo de golf mundialmente reconocido e increíbles instalaciones de tenis en consonancia con el resto del complejo.

¿Cómo es el usuario tipo del Centro de Tenis? ¿Hay muchas familias apuntadas?

Los huéspedes que disfrutan de nuestras instalaciones son adultos y niños por igual, según la época del año. Durante los periodos de vacaciones escolares (Navidad, Pascua, verano) muchas familias vienen a disfrutar del resort y organizamos campamentos de tenis para todas las edades. Más allá de las actividades programadas, muchas familias alquilan canchas para jugar a su aire. El resto del año los usuarios son mayoritariamente adultos.

Abama es internacionalmente conocido por su campo de golf, pero el Centro de Tenis tam-bién es una instalación totalmente profesional. ¿Cómo está trabajando para posicionar el centro y obtener un perfil más alto?

Nuestras instalaciones de tenis también son muy populares en Europa. A lo largo de nuestra trayectoria, hemos celebrado eventos que han atraído al complejo a figuras de este deporte como Bjorn Borg, Michael Stitch, Pat Cash, Emilio Sánchez o Jeremy Bates. A medio y largo plazo, intentaremos desarrollar aún más nuestra Academia de Tenis y organizar torneos internacionales.

WHAT TO DO WITH THE LITTLE ONES THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

El Abama Kids’ Camp ha sido, sin duda, una de las novedades mejor recibidas de nuestra oferta de ocio de 2019. Como cualquier otro servicio en el resort, el objetivo siempre es superar las expectativas ... ¡incluso las de los más pequeños de la casa!

Porque la finalidad pedagógica del Abama Kids’ Camp es tan firme como la del entretenimiento, la directora Susana Budé continúa presentando propuestas creativas tan educativas como divertidas.

¡Esta Navidad, no dejes que tus hijos se lo pierdan! Organizaremos actividades originales tan adaptadas a los niños y a estas fechas tan entrañables que puede que te sea difícil llevártelos de vuelta a casa. Además de una visita de Papá Noel y manualidades con motivos navideños, el Abama Kids’ Camp ha planeado excursiones especiales a la Feria de Navidad para niños que se celebra en la ciudad, así como clases de karting y tenis. En la víspera de Año Nuevo tenemos un programa especial planificado de 18 a 23 h, para que en la despedida de 2019 disfruten tanto como los adultos. Durante todo el mes, también habrá actividades nuevas y diferentes, incluido un taller de creación de arena mágica, un Escape Room, celebraciones navideñas al estilo hawaiano, Just Dance, deporte, leyendas de las Islas Canarias y mucho más.

On New Year’s Eve we have a special program planned from 18-23h, so that the children’s farewell to 2019 can be as entertaining as yours. Ready yourself for a day of explosive landscapes when you step out of your Abama Tenerife apartment and embark on an other-worldly journey through seas of lava found few places on the planet. Suitable for hikers of all abilities and fitness levels, Tenerife offers a variety of walks to exercise the hamstrings or take it easy as you absorb the eerie beauty of ancient lava flows and spectacular scenery. Our favorites include the Chinyero Loop from the Santiago del Teide entrance; the multiple short walks around the town of Garachico; and the Fasnia Volcano route beginning at Corral del Niño.

In total, the Canary Islands boast 10 appellations of origin, of which no less than 5 hail from Tenerife: Abona, Tacoronte-Acentejo, Valle de Güimar, Valle de la Orotava, and Ycoden-Daute-Isora. Our archipelago is also one of four regions worldwide completely free of the phylloxera plague, meaning that grape strains can be planted directly in the land. This gives a subtle mineral touch to all our wines; like most everything else here, the path always seems to lead back to the volcano. Our own Melvin restaurant serves four of Tenerife’s five D.O.s, so your best place to begin exploring could well be just across the road.

DIVE INTO LOCAL WINES



A paradise protected within the Natural Park of the Chinijo Archipelago and easily accessible from our resort, perhaps you’ve already had the fortune to discover La Graciosa. Officially named the eighth Canary Island just last year, it can be reached by ferry. The charm of La Graciosa goes beyond its impressive beaches: it has some of the best diving in the area, as well as four perfectly defined volcanic heights. You can also meet its 700-some inhabitants and dip into the past as you travel along its flat dirt roads on foot or by bicycle. Inns, camping areas, and apartments and houses for rent make it easy even to stay for a day or two.

Paraíso protegido dentro del Parque Natural del Archipiélago Chinijo y de fácil acceso desde nuestro resort, quizás ya hayas tenido la fortuna de descubrir La Graciosa. Oficialmente nombrada la octava isla canaria el año pasado, se puede llegar a ella en ferry. El encanto de La Graciosa va más allá de sus impresionantes playas: aglutina algunos de los mejores lugares para bucear, así como cuatro alturas volcánicas perfectamente definidas. También puedes conocer a sus 700 habitantes y sumergirte en el pasado mientras recorres sus caminos de tierra a pie o en bicicleta. Pensiones, áreas para acampar y apartamentos o casas en alquiler hacen que sea fácil incluso quedarse un par de días.

LA GRACIOSA

You may be thinking only of Christmas right now, but there’s another unique celebration right around the corner: the Santa Cruz Carnival. The first parades begin the 21st of February in 2020, but there are contests and galas throughout the months leading up to it. The Tenerife Carnival is the second-most-popular in the world after Rio de Janeiro, and that alone should make it an obligatory event at least once in your lifetime. Every year hundreds of thousands of people descend on the island capital to immerse themselves in the rhythm and the madness. Get your costume ready; the summer is to be enjoyed, but at Abama, the winter is too!

Puede que ya estés pensando en la Navidad, pero hay otra celebración única a la vuelta de la esquina: el Carnaval de Santa Cruz. Los primeros desfiles comienzan el 21 de febrero de 2020, pero hay concursos y galas durante los meses previos. Porque el Carnaval de Tenerife es el segundo más popular del mundo después del de Río de Janeiro, no puedes dejar de visitarlo al menos una vez en la vida. Cada año, cientos de miles de personas descienden a la capital de la isla para sumergirse en el ritmo y la locura.
