INTRODUCTION TO UNITROL® / MEGATROL® CERTIFICATIONUNITROL excitation systems stand for high reliability and excellent performance. ABB’scompetent field service engineers (FSEs) are a key element to securing professionalcommissioning and maintenance of your installation. The certification process guarantees a highlevel, worldwide service standard.ABB Switzerland’s excitation systems service has developed this systematic certificationprogram for FSEs in order to deliver efficient and high performance installations.

PRODUCT CERTIFICATION FOR FIELD SERVICE ENGINEERS

The following describes the certification and re-certification processes for FSEs,including e participation at “Expert Days”.

LEVEL OF CERTIFICATION AND WORKING SCOPESThe different certification levels authorize to work on different scopes according to the followingtable:

PRODUCT CERTIFICATION STRUCTURE

The certification process starts with Basic competencies required to undergo training on aspecific system which is provided by the training centers of excitation systems through the ABBUniversity in Switzerland.After completing the training program, the trainee attains Basic Level and must gain practicalexperience on real systems. The trainee must be supervised by a certified FSE beforeindependently undertaking a complete commissioning on the specific system. Having passed afinal exam, the trainee needs to participate in twice-yearly expert days in order to maintain theExpert Level certification, which is valid for two years. The final exam has to be conducted bythe Product Responsible Unit (PRU).

ABB University offers a wide range of training on product operation and maintenance from itsglobal training centres. Instructors have the expertise, experience and education to lead studentsthrough lecture and laboratory exercises. The students interact with other ABB product users inan open and informative environment as they acquire and enhance their skill sets and knowledgeof ABB equipment. With a comprehensive selection of training classes, ABB University isdedicated to maximizing the return on your investment.

EXPERT DAYS

To maintain the expertise, ABB organizes annual meetings for service engineers. During theseExpert Days a know-how and experience exchange takes place which reinforces a consistentquality and competence level in the different countries and organizations. The expert days aretaking place once a year in ABB Switzerland.

At the end of two years, when certification expires, engineers must attend the expert days inorder to re-certify their expertise and re-qualify as a certified engineer. Personnel with expired orwithout any certification are prohibited from servicing or commissioning UNITROL/MEGATROLand will cease to be supported by ABB. Access to product and support databases will be blocked.

PRODUCT CERTIFICATION VALIDITYIMPORTANT: The UNITROL® or MEGATROL® certificate is valid for two years. The FSE has toplan a re-certification before the expiration date. Customers will have the right to see thiscertificate.

CONSEQUENCES OF NON-COMPLIANCE AND EXPIREDCERTIFICATIONSThe UNITROL® and MEGATROL® systems must be commissioned and maintained by personnelcertified for that particular product type. In case non-certified personnel or personnel with expiredcertifications commission or service UNITROL® or MEGATROL® equipment, then:

· Product warranty on the product commissioned or serviced will be void.

· Any support from ABB will be charged at daily rates of the specific country.

PRODUCT RELATED CERTIFICATION PATHThe UNITROL® 6000 and MEGATROL® product certifications are composed of training,practical experience and a final exam:

START WITH THE CERTIFICATION PROCESSTo start the certification process please go to www1000.abb.com and login with your ABBuser data.

OPEN AND UPDATE YOUR PERSONAL PROFILE IN PCS2Important: After the initial entering of your personal profile, please update your data after eachchange. You are responsible to keep your personal profile updated.

- Open in the tab “My profile” and select “My certifications” in the main menu.

- Check if country, e-mail and organization information is correct and update the following fields:

- Company: Select your company with the according location from the drop down menu.

- Hierarchical Manager: To select your hierarchical manager click the icon (market below) and

select your manager’s name from the list. Important: The hierarchical manager approves all local

requirements.

- Employee job: Select your job profile from the drop-down menu (if you work in the field service,

please select “Onsite service”).

- Business unit: Select your Business Unit.

- PG unit: Select your reporting code.

- Preferred language: Select your preferred language for the e-learning training courses.

- Allow course enrollments in English: Tick to accept English courses in case there are no

courses available in your preferred language.

ENROLL FOR A NEW CERTIFICATIONSelect “Available Certificates” in the main menu on the right side.

Fill the name of the product into “Certificate List Title” (e.g.UNITROL® 6000 X-power; -Power;- Medium; -Light; UNIREC; MEGATROL®; etc.)To show only the “Expert level certification”, either tick “Exclude Prerequisites”, or select“Expert” in the filter “Level” and then select Search.

Open the required certification program (e.g. on-site Service - MEGATROL – Expert)Select “Enroll”

Click “OK” in the pop-up window as shown below.

You are now registered for the certification. The complete process for one product includes intotal3 certificates as shown below:

1. On-site Service - Basic Competences for Commissioning of UNITROL/MEGATROLSystems

2. On-site Service - “Product” – Basic (e.g. Onsite Service – UNITROL 6000 X-power – Basic)3. On-site Service - “Product” – Expert (e.g. Onsite Service - UNITROL 6000 X-power – Expert)

To receive “Expert Level” for one product, you need to complete the certificates step-by-step inthe given order starting with the Field Service Engineer (FSE) Basic Competences.

FOLLOW THE CERTIFICATION PROCESSOn-site Service - Basic Competences for Commissioning of UNITROL/MEGATROLSystems

1. Go to menu “My Certifications” on the left.2. Open the certificate with “Detail”

Important: The requirements in this certificate need to be approved by your hierarchicalresponsible.

3. To get the approval, go to “Detail” and submit your requirement in PCS2 after it is completed(see below).

The note “Waiting Approval” will appear. In the meantime your hierarchical manager will receivean e-mail notification for approval.

After approval, the status “Completed” will appear (see below).

If all requirements of the certificate are fulfilled and completed, the whole certificate willautomatically be approved.The certificate “Onsite Service - Basic Competences for Commissioning ofUNITROL/MEGATROL Systems” will be valid for all certification lists of theUNITROL/MEGATROL product family.

Now the certification process can be continued with the following certificate for Basic Level.

CERTIFICATE FOR ON-SITE SERVICE – UNITROL® 6000 X-POWER - BASICTo receive this certificate, you need to participate in courses of ABB University. Go to ABBUniversity website (http://new.abb.com/power-electronics/service/training) and register for therequired courses.After completion of a course, the requirement will be automatically approved overnight.Here is a list of the trainings you need to attend (depending on the product):

RE-BRANDING OF UNITROL 6000Due to the UNITROL 6000 re-branding (details please find in the Certification Guideline for FSEon page 6) the requirement list of Basic Level contains current courses (NEW from Aug 2015)and former courses (marked with “OLD”). The OLD courses are not offered anymore.In case you have already completed some of the “OLD” courses in the past or you are alreadycertified for UNITROL 6080 or UNITROL 6800, there is no need to repeat the equivalent of thenew courses.Certification for UNITROL 6080 is equivalent to UNITROL 6000 Light and MediumCertification for UNITROL 6800 is equivalent to UNITROL 6000 Power and X-power

ON-SITE SERVICE – UNITROL 6000 X-POWER - EXPERTTo reach the “Expert Level” you first need to participate in a commissioning and in a next steplead a commissioning under supervision of an ABB certified Expert Field Service Engineer (FSE).After performing of the commissioning, download the questionnaire (see:http://new.abb.com/power-electronics/service/training) form and upload the completed version tothe PCS2 database (find instructions below). Then, submit the following requirements forapproval.

After the requirements are approved, you can register for the Final Exam to reach the “ExpertLevel”. After passing successfully the exam, the certification process is completed.
