Requiem æternam dona eis Domine: et lux perpetua luceat eis.Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

Te decet hymnus Deus, in Sion, et tibi reddetur votum in Ierusalem. It is fitting to sing a hymn to you, O God, on Mount Zion;and our vows will be rendered to you in Jerusalem.

Exaudi orationem meam; ad te omnis caro veniet.Hear my prayer; to you all flesh will come.

Requiem . . .—Introit, Funeral Mass, IV Esdra 2: 34, 35, Mode VI; Psalm 65:2

ReSpoNSoRIAL pSALM

O God, you are my God, for you I long; So I will bless you all my life, for you my soul is thirsting. in your name I will lift up my hands. My body pines for you My soul shall be filled as with a banquet, like a dry, weary land without water. my mouth shall praise you with joy.

So I gaze on you in the sanctuary For your have been my help;to see your strength and your glory. in the shadow of your wings I rejoice. For your love is better than life, My soul clings to you;my lips will speak your praise. your right hand holds me fast.

goSpeL ACCLAMATIoN

pRepARATIoN of gIfTS St. Patrick’s Breastplate

1. I bind unto myself today the strong Name of the Trinity, by invocation of the same, the Three in One, and One in Three.

2. I bind this day to me for ever, by power of faith, Christ’s Incarnation; his baptism in the Jordan river; his death on cross for my salvation, his bursting from the spiced tomb; his riding up the heavenly way; his coming at the day of doom: I bind unto myself today.

3. I bind unto myself the power of the great love of cherubim; the sweet “Well done” in judgment hour; the service of the seraphim; confessors’ faith, apostles’ word, the patriarchs’ prayers, the prophets’ scrolls; all good deeds done unto the Lord, and purity of virgin souls.

This hymn was sung at Abbot Timothy’s abbatial blessing on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, January 10, 1993.

The first five stanzas are sung by the abbey schola:

4. I bind unto myself today the power of God to hold and lead, his eye to watch, his might to stay, his ear to hearken to my need; the wisdom of my God to teach, his hand to guide, his shield to ward; the word of God to give me speech, his heavenly host to be my guard.

5. Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

All join to sing the final stanza:
