Politicians are wading back into the issue of a new water source for Abbotsford and Mission, in the wake of a new report that the city is not facing an imminent supply shortage.

The report suggests the city does not need a new water source by 2016, as voters were told during the referendum on the proposed Stave Lake P3 water system that was part of the November 2011 municipal election. The public/private partnership plan was soundly defeated.

The Bookworm disappears

‘Abby Senior’ comes down

Vikki HOPESAbbotsford News

One of several pieces of public art located in Abbotsford’s historic downtown core has gone missing.

The Bookworm, valued at about $6,000, was taken from the corner of Pauline Street and Essendene Avenue sometime in the last week, according to Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald.

The four-by-five-foot solid-wood sculp-ture, created by master woodworker Scott Robertson, depicts a bookworm reading an open book. It was co-spon-sored by the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association (ADBA) and Prospera Credit Union in 2001, and donated to the city.

It is one of nine “bench art” pieces located in the downtown area.

MacDonald said the sculpture was reported missing by staff of the ADBA and the parks, recreation and culture department, which conducts routine inspections and maintenance of public art pieces in the community.

ADBA president Tina Stewart said she first became aware of the theft on Friday, and then asked merchants in the area if they had seen anything

suspicious. One woman reported having seen a

man cart the bench away last Tuesday or Wednesday on a pallet jack, but it was in broad daylight and she assumed he was taking it away for repairs.

MacDonald said police believe the incident is a theft and not a prank.

He said the size and weight of the piece means it is likely that at least two people moved it. They would have

needed a vehicle and tools capable of cutting through large bolts in order to remove it.

MacDonald said it’s not likely that the thieves would try to sell the sculpture. Rather, police believe they could have placed it in their yard or in their home as a conversation piece.

The project was unveiled in 2002 by the artist, who worked closely with students from North Poplar Elementary to design the bench.

Two short stories are written on the open pages. One side gives a history of North Poplar school and the other recounts the background of Prospera Credit Union.

More than 300 students from North Poplar signed their names on the bench.

Eleven days after it was unveiled, the worm was stolen from the project but was returned a short time later. Stewart hopes the same thing happens this time.

“It would be nice if it came back home,” she said.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to contact the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

It was the demoli-tion job of a lifetime – his old high school.

“I was chasing it down. That was on my bucket list – to take down my old school,” said Brad Morrison, project manager over-seeing the demolition o f A b b o t s f o r d

Senior. He g r a d u -ated from “A b b y, ” as it has

always been affectionately known to grads, in 1993.

It was perhaps easier for him to arrange this Bart Simpson fantasy with his employer, Surrey-based Clearview Grinding, because the company owner, Mike Lalonde, is also an Abbotsford grad.

There was no way they would let another company get this

demolition contract.Morrison attended

the Abby open house with his parents Kim and Sherry Morrison, who are also alumni, on June 2. They had one last walk through the halls.

Brad had a nostalgic last look at the shop classes where he took woodwork and metal-work, but allows that going into the library felt like a first.

“I spent a lot of time here as a kid,” he said

on Tuesday morning, while watching a 46-ton excavator’s bucket rip into the school walls like a fork into a cake.

“We raised a little hell here.”

The big moment

came for the bucket to take down the front wall, painted with the school crest and the legendary Panther logo. Running the machine was Rob Kermode, yet another Abby grad of 1980.

At least 90 per cent of Abbotsford Senior will be recycled. Clearview Grinding will grind the wood, and it will be either used as bio fuel, or cap cover for landfill sites.

The concrete will be crushed and re-used on site, and the rebar and other metals will be recycled.

The demolition will be completed by the middle of August.

“It’s the end of an era, that’s for sure,” Morrison observed.

“You can Photoshop a tear in my eye.”

His grade 9 son starts school at the new Abby this fall.

the city must use worst-case scenarios in water planning to ensure a safe supply.

“The future demands are lower than previously estimat-ed in the 2010 Water Master Plan, most notably due to lower population projections, reduced anticipated future demand from non-residential properties and lower per capita consumption,” stated the report.

The combined population of Abbotsford-Mission is expected to reach 268,000 in the next 25 years. This is an annual growth rate of 1.63 per cent, which is lower than the rate of 2.17 per cent which was projected in the 2010 Water Master Plan, prepared by the international firm AECOM Canada.

Jim Gordon, general manager of engineering, said the city found 3,000 water leaks when it installed water meters, and stemming that waste of water, as well as making people more aware of their consumption, will have contributed to the reduction in consumption.

“The water meters are more successful than we thought they would be,” said Gordon.

However, Ross pointed out, “We still do have to figure out a future water source.”

Ross is the only water commission veteran, as both Braun, Banman and the three

Mission council members are all in their first year on the committee.

The 50-page report offers projects with varying supply volumes, each with different price tags.

It notes long-term solutions carry higher up-front costs for taxpayers, while interim steps are “more immediately afford-able.”

The city currently has a capac-ity of 143 million litres per day. In 2007, the city’s peak usage was 139.2 million litres on one day (MLD). In 2008 it dropped to 119.8 MLD, went to 126.6 in 2009, 106.8 in 2010 and 93.1 in 2011.

Among the report’s options are twinning the Norrish Creek waterline, which is pres-ently the city’s principal water source.

The cost would be $60 million for 50 MLD (mega or million litres per day), or $80 million for 85 MLD. A drawback of this medium capacity source is the lack of redundancy – an earthquake or landslide could cause the failure of both lines. It’s also reliant on snowpack and precipitation.

Figures cited at this stage are only estimates.

The Miracle Valley aquifer northeast of Mission could provide a small- to medium-sized water source, at a cost of $20 million, or $40 million with

filtration.A plan to pump water from

Stave Lake into Cannell Lake, and then use that as a watersource is listed as a $50-millionplan that would provide a smallto medium-sized source.

The report does not indicatehow long these options wouldextend the city’s water capac-ity, although during the waterdebate last year, city sourcescited a Norrish Creek expan-sion as a 10-year solution.

The large capacity sourcesidentified include the FraserRiver and Stave Lake, whichwould both cost in excess of$200 million.

Abbotsford would be theonly large municipality usingthe Fraser as a water source. The report suggests that wellsdrilled near the Fraser wouldprovide a high water yield, andwould be naturally cleaned bya process called “riverbankfiltration.”

“There are places in the worldthat use water far more pollut-ed than the Fraser,” Gordonsaid. Ross said the staff reportswere well done, and it will beup to the commission to directstaff which options to study inmore detail. At least three willbe drawn into sharper focus.

“There’s time to consider itwell, and make sure the publicis part of this discussion,” saidRoss.

Ride for Hope

The Ride for Hope bike ride to raise awareness and funds for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice made a stop in Abbotsford last Wednesday afternoon.

More than 50 cyclists took part in the 174-kilo-metre event, which began in Morgan Creek in South Surrey and ended in Hope. They stopped in Abbotsford

for a break at West Oaks Mall.

A m o n g the partic-

ipants were V a n c o u v e r

Canucks alumni such as Gary Nylund, Dean Malkoc and Dennis Ververgaert.

The ride began in 2007, and last year

raised more than $137,000. This year’s event was expected to collect about the same amount, which funds the Canuck Place facilities in Vancouver and the one currently under construction in Abbotsford. The new 10-bed facility is part of the Campus of Care project located on Marshall Road.

The hospice offers health care in a home-like setting for children with life-threatening illnesses.

Welding repairs linked to fire in grain siloVikki HOPESAbbotsford News

An explosion and fire at Ritchie Smith Feeds on Wednesday afternoon were due to welding repairs done ear-lier in the day, according to Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service.

Assistant Fire Chief Dave Rivett said the welding may have heated some materials on the inside wall of a grain silo, resulting in embers coming down and igniting combustible dusts, caus-

ing an explosion.A service contractor doing “hot

works” repairs was nearby on the roof at the time, but was able to get down safely, Rivett said.

When fire crews arrived on the scene at 33777 Enterprise Ave., smoke was coming from the grain tower, and the fire was contained to the inside.

They gained access to the roof using two aerial ladder trucks. They had to

make a hole in the bottom of the silo to avoid it from being further damaged or

collapsing due to the weight of the water being used to fight the fire.

“The outside temperatures and the location of the fire deeply inside the equipment made this a

very difficult fire to extinguish,” Rivett said.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury during ground operations when he lost his footing. He was treated on

the scene.A total of 12 career firefighters, 24

auxiliary firefighters and nine trucksfrom Abbotsford responded to the inci-dent.

Assistance was provided by MissionFire Rescue, which sent one truck andcrew.

Ritchie Smith produces animal feed. The building is located in the industri-al area west of the Abbotsford-MissionHighway.

It’s shopping, not buying, that’s the chore

I have a small patch of lawn at the front of the house, too tiny to easily mow with the lawn tractor. Fortunately, a kind soul a couple of years ago offered me a discarded electric mower which worked out quite nicely, despite mowing off a chunk of cord on its second use.

Thus, there was a sense of lament when the machine began to make some unusual noises, followed by smoke and a grinding halt to its rotary motion.

Some neighbours stopped to chat a couple of Sundays ago, and since I knew they attended the local fl ea market on a regular basis, I asked if they ever saw any cheap electrics for sale.

As a matter of fact, they related, the market is still open and though they didn’t notice any such items, there might be one available.

Since my city son-in-law was out for a visit, I asked if he would like to join me. He

agreed, adding he’d also like to check out one of the department stores for a water toy to keep the toddler cool on such a hot day.

Now, I’m not a shopper. I go to stores for something specifi c, fi nd the item and get out as quickly as I can (except of course for a cruise through the tool and sports depart-ments to see if there is anything new that I didn’t need but might want).

Son-in-law, I discovered, is a shopper. We enter the store together, unsuccessfully peruse the water toys and then it’s time to go – for me. Not so him. I suggested I’d wait outside, and I waited and fi nally the hot sun got to me so I climbed into the truck, cranked the air and waited some more. Finally he emerged clutching a $1 bubble maker.

Only an hour left before the fl ea market and my possible purchase of an electric lawn mower was gone for another week, my grass in the meantime rising to epic heights.

At the market, as people were packing up their sale items, I raced around looking for what was not available. I even passed up an opportunity to chat with the attractive woman giving away a crate-full of kittens.

Son-in-law, on the other hand, was fascinated by all the trinkets, junk and

farm produce (buy that when the market fi rst opens, not this late in the day, I admon-ished).

I probably spent more time looking for him than I did a lawn mower.

As we were driving away, and I relented to his request to stop at yet another store to buy the so far elusive water toy, there

on the side of the street was a garage sale with, lo and behold, an electric lawn mower right out in front.

Three minutes later, with fi fty bucks accepted, it was in the back of the truck. An hour later we left the second depart-ment store with a suitable toy.

The kid was happy, I was happy and after mowing the little front lawn with my new acquisition, it was time for a beer and talk about the possibility of spending a week-end fi shing on some remote lake.

That discussion arrived at the need to acquire a small aluminum boat since, on the last trip I took the son-in-law, I found his unfamiliarity with a canoe a little disconcerting, especially in the middle of a lake.

Thus a more stable craft is in order. Again, using the same frugality that led meto the used mower, I began checking Craig-slist for boats. There were quite a few, but do you think anyone selling them would get back to me?

I responded to the ads, noting the price – generally about $500 – was right, the boat’s size and condition looked good, and I’d come to buy it as soon as I was told where itwas. Not a response, and a day or two later the boats were no longer listed.

Either there are a lot of fathers-in-law taking city sons fi shing, or Craigslist sellers aren’t quite as adept sales people as those who stock fl ea markets and yard sales.

So now that I have fi lled my need for a cheap electric mower, I’m ‘desperately’ in the market for a 12-foot ‘wide-beam’ aluminum boat. If there’s one cluttering your back yard and you want a quick deal let me know.

Once again, Abbotsford politicians are diving into the subject of Abbots-ford’s water supply.

It was a key issue in former mayor George Peary’s defeat in the polls last fall – along with the Stave Lake P3 water referendum.

In the wake of a defi cit-running arena project and the controversial Heat hockey deal, the majority of vot-ers weren’t ready to believe a public/private water supply partnership was the wisest choice, or the need as dire, as city hall was maintaining.

Last year, the driving infl uence was that of AECOM engineers, authors of the 2010 Water Master Plan, which set 2016 as the worst case scenario of Abbotsford potentially exceeding its water supply capacity.

That plan recommended a $300-million Stave Lake water source as the solution to increased population and consumption over the next 25 years and perhaps beyond.

However, according to a new staff

report, the new mayor and council have more time – until 2020 – to decide and provide a water supply solution.

Skeptics will likely say the extension is more a matter of political will, but it seems a combination of reduced consumption and slower growth pro-jections have bought the city time.

The report provides a number of options, which were ostensibly consid-ered and rejected by AECOM in favour of the long-term Stave plan.

Ultimately, the basic factors remain. The city does need a new water sup-

ply to meet future demands.Does council give weary taxpayers

a break, and proceed with a smaller-scale project, even though it will mean planning another water project in the near future?

Four years may be but a blink in the life of a city, but it is a welcome dead-line extension.

It’s additional time for city hall – and the public – to examine, consider, and hopefully, get it right.

Unhappy with city hall salaries during economic slowdownInstead of an uproar,

it seems that the Abbotsford population quietly accepts the outrageous increases the municipal council awarded itself and its employees.

While the economy has been slowing down, and wages for most people have been

stagnant, our civil servants keep going to the trough.

The world economy is slowing down and a very serious crisis is expected by many economists. City tax revenues have nosedived. Because of all the handsome pay scales, pensions and

health care benefits that local governments awarded themselves, many cities are broke. Several have declared

bankruptcy.Have our own civil

servants ever thought of the possibility their tax revenue may go

down, forcing them to either lower their income and benefits, or else raise taxes?

Count on your taxes

being raised, because lowering their own benefits goes against the grain of all politi-cians.

Let them know youalso are unhappy withtheir lack of consider-ation.

1. “My good friend (or husband) tried to do it.” My apologies to the guys reading this, but it’s true. A big part of our business is fi nishing up the electrical projects you start . . . from outlets to ceiling fans. And that’s okay, although it would be easier and probably cheaper if you’d call us fi rst. We have the tools, experience and know-how to do the job right, start to fi nish. Call us for proven professional electrical expertise.

2. “I need a ceiling fan or chandelier installed.” We install lighting fi xtures, fans, outlets, dimmers and more. Our work is guaranteed to meet city codes, and we use only copper wiring (no aluminum). Want to know why we use only copper wiring? Call us.

3. “I have a breaker that doesn’t stay reset.” If your breaker keeps tripping, you don’t have the equivalent of a fl ooded basement, yet. But, you do have a potentially dangerous problem involving the electrical circuits in your home. Don’t ignore it. Call us!

4. “I’ve got an ugly internet or cable TV wiring stapled to my baseboards.” Let us do the job right. Snaking wire through walls is an art, a science, a skill . . . and our specialty. It’s also something few electricians, cable companies or internet providers like to do. But you’re in luck when you call us. We’re World Champions at snaking wire without knocking holes in your walls.

5. “Smells like something’s burning” Overheated appliances and electrical circuits are a problem you don’t want to ignore. A call to us now could save

you a call to 911 later.

6. “The ‘mystery switch’.” We love getting this call. If you’ve got

a switch that you’ve never been able to link to an outlet or circuit, call us to solve the mystery.

How to choose the Right Electricianif you have any of these 6 problems and you want them fi xed today!

Unlike the plumbers I know, electricians rarely get emergency calls. Our equivalent of a fl ood in the basement is a fi re in the attic . . . and you don’t call us for that. You call 911.So you’re probably not reading this because you’ve got an electrical emergency. Instead, you have an electrical problem like one of these . . .

Bandits sweep Rebels in first-place showdownThe Tri-City Bandits

knocked the Valley Rebels off their first-

place perch, sweeping a pivotal weekend series to overtake the

Abbotsford squad for top spot in the West Coast Senior Lacrosse

Association.The Bandits came

into MSA Arena on Friday and thumped the Rebels 11-4, build-ing an early 4-0 lead and cruising from there.

The Valley squad was primed for revenge on Saturday at PoCo Rec Complex, taking a 5-4 lead in the third period thanks to a hat trick from Sean Kelly and singles from Graham Wiedenhammer and Jordan Hernandez. But Ryan Mosdell brought the Bandits back, scor-ing twice in the late going – including the

game-winning goalwith the goalie pulledand just 1.7 seconds lefton the clock – to lift histeam to a 6-5 win.

The Rebels took outtheir frustrations onthe Royal City Capitalson Sunday, winning18-2. But they’re nowsecond in the WCSLAat 13-5-0 for 26 points, one back of the Bandits(13-3-1), who have onegame in hand.

The Rebels hostanother big game onFriday, when the third-place Ladner Pioneers(12-5-1) visit MSAArena for an 8 p.m. tilt.

Dominant Dawgs defend flag football crownDan KINVIGAbbotsford News

The Duncan Dawgs won their second consecutive Western Canadian Flag Football C h a m p i o n s h i p , blowing out the Vancouver Villains in the tournament finale on Sunday at Exhibition Park.

The Vancouver Island squad rolled through the round robin with a perfect 3-0 record, winning by an average of 23 points per game. They capped the event with a 46-20 triumph over the Villains.

“No one really gave

them a game – they really didn’t even get pushed,” tourney organizer Scott Beadell said, marveling at Duncan’s efficiency.

The lone Abbotsford squad in the field, the Fraser Valley Touch Football League All-Stars, failed to qualify for the playoffs after going 1-2 in pool play. They beat the Kelowna Browns 37-14, but close losses to the Vancouver King Cobras (33-26) and the Seattle Leny’s Bad Dogs (31-29) sealed their elimina-tion.

The weekend event marked the third

consecutive year that Beadell has staged the WCFFC in Abbotsford.

“In general, I thought it went really, really well,” he said. “It’s

growing, and it got a lot of positive response throughout the city.”

Dwayne Croin of the Fraser Valley All-Stars attempts to elude a Vancouver opponent.

Whalers win home meetDan KINVIGAbbotsford News

Heading into his club’s annual meet at Centennial Pool, Abbotsford Whalers head swimming coach Mark Townsend wasn’t expecting his athletes to be in optimum form.

The Whalers, after all, had competed at UBC the previous weekend, and Townsend had pushed them hard in practice during the week with the goal of having them peak at the regional championships in early August.

The Whalers ended up surprising their coach, though, as most swimmers posted times right around their personal

bests. The host club also won the overall points title at the weekend event.

“I was really happy,” Townsend said afterward. “We were coming off a really hard week of training, so I wasn’t expecting, especially with our

older swimmers, a lot of best times. But they performed really well.”

The meet drew over 400 swimmers, including 150

from the local club. Among the Whalers’ top

medal magnets were Brittany Paget (Div. 1 girls, gold in 100 IM, 50 free and 50 back, silver in 100 free), Fallon Quast (Div. 3 girls, gold in 100 IM, 50 fly and 100 free, silver in the 50 back),

Laura Berard (Div. 4 girls, gold in 200 IM, 50 fly and 100 back, silver in 100 free), Brenden Saether (Div. 4 boys, gold in 50 free, 100 back and 100 free, silver in 50 fly), and Nadia Berard (Div. 7 girls, gold in 200 IM, 50 free, 100 breast, 100 free).

Townsend was also impressed with Emily Aikema, who battled illness all week but came through with a series of strong performances in the Div. 5 girls category.

“She was able to step up and have some really nice swims,” he said. “For me, that was one of the highlights.”

The next big event at Centennial Pool is the regional championships, Aug. 3-5.

Abbotsford's Jacob Doerksen is climbing the ladder in the pro basketball world.

The Rick Hansen Secondary grad spent last season with the UBC Hannover Tigers in Germany's Pro B division last year. He's moving up to the Pro A division for the 2012-13 campaign, after sign-ing with Rasta Vechta on Wednesday.

The 6'7" forward, who played his univer-sity basketball with the Victoria Vikes and Trinity Western Spartans, was domi-nant in his first pro season, averaging 21.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and two steals per game with UBC Hannover.

Doerksen was named Germany Pro B Center of the Year by Eurobasket.com, and was also honoured as a first team all-star and a member of the all-import team by the website.

“My first year playing professionally was a wonderful experience,” Doerksen said. “I am excited to be moving up to Pro A and look for-ward to a great year.”

BELDAMJohn Edward

Feb. 3, 1921 ~ July 6, 2012

Born in Vancouver, John lived in Sardis until 1939 when he sailed for England to attend Wireless College then joined the British Merchant Navy as a Wireless Operator for the duration of the war. At the age of 20 the ship he was on was torpedoed in the North Sea where he was one of 11 who survived for 96 hours in an open lifeboat, resulting in frozen feet. After recovery he resumed his duties until post-war when he returned home to Chilliwack, moved to Abbots-ford where he lived and worked until retirement. With wireless training he joined the R.A.C. where he enjoyed the network of friends he met and continued to be an active member until his illness. As a Rotarian, John was one of the early instigators of the Abbots-ford Air Show. Having learned to play the saxophone while in the Chilliwack High School Band, music became an inte-gral part of his life after the war, playing in dance bands, Chilliwack Senior Band and for years along with his wife, Mary, the Abbotsford Concert Band, including trips and marching into his 70’s. Appre-ciating life in the outdoors meant many camping trips along with their stays on the lot at Skagit River Woods while his love of “ships and the sea” was apparent in both liner and freighter cruises annually. John was a photog-rapher, knowledgeable local historian, teller of tales and sociable singer, kind and car-ing. Predeceased by his wife, Mary, his parents and brother Phillip he will be lovingly re-membered by his sisters Beryl Thomey and Betty (Larry) Rogers, numerous nieces and nephews, friend and caregiver Norma and Doug who will miss sharing laughter with “the old man at the back of the bus.” No service by request.
