Economic Development Tourism Tourism has had a very successful start under the leadership of Deana Beaton. Her team developed several tourism products and worked with successful tourism operator “Target Tours Atlantic” to create and market tourism initiatives to the public and tourism market. The products included “the Seven Sacred Teachings”, “Connecting with Beads” and a “Epekwitk garden” tour. Deana continues to work with Joe Knockwood developing a tourism product through recreational fishing- striped bass, trout and a catch and release salmon fishing. Deana’s team included Thirly Levi, Kindra Bernard, Deon Bernard, Miskisk Jadis, Schurman Peters, Barb Bernard, and Bethany Dennis. Tourism received financial support from ACOA and the province of PEI to help provide training, to beautify the community and prepare the tourism sector, we are in hopes to be totally operational for the tourism

season of 2019. This year was considered capacity training for all tourism activities from the summer and fall of 2018 for our tourism staff.

Training initiatives included World Host, Perry Gotell and training through Joe Knockwood and Gary Maclean for fishing guides. Recreational fishing guides Bruce jr. Jadis and Melvin Denis helped grow our tourism sector!

Community Beautification

Several projects were under taken this summer including excessing the topsoil, landscaping and seeding of the public area around the rink, ballfield and playground. A great big thank-you for all the groups (streams, forestry, tourism, the garden and others) who came together and worked for over a week to make this happen. The topsoil investment was over $10,000 for the removal from the community field to the trucking and leveling. Having the community labor for this project made the project happen!

Thank-you to Jr Gould and his workers, Stephen and Chris who have been working since the summer on several community projects: major structural renovations to the outdoor rink, construction of benches/seating areas for the playground, renovation to the upstairs of the Chapel, the basement of the band office, etc.

During the summer the Pathways Youth group painted the flower boxes build by Brandi Jadis. This youth group designed and painted the moccasin trail on the pavement in the community. The AYES Youth Group provided the dollars to have the outdoor community boxes made, the paint supplies for these flower boxes and some art supplies for the community art project. Thank-you to both the Pathways and AYES Youth for helping make the Abegweit community beautiful!

Over the summer flowers were planted around the community. In the fall tulips, daffodils and crocus flowers where planted and will bloom next spring. Thanks to Ruby and Stephen for the summer flower work and to CJ and Bree for the fall plantings!

Once the outdoor rink was restored a group of community members, Rita Bernard, Brenda Bernard, Bree Knockwood, Deon Bernard, Lou Peters, CJ Cleal, and Gloria Bernard painted the rink inside and outside and prepared the area space for the outdoor art work. Thank-you all for a job well done!

Gloria Bernard worked with Brandi Jadis, Faith Jadis and Noel Paul to design, draw and paint all our outdoor art work that is now displayed on the rink. The final art piece “the Red Dress” is hung and displayed upstairs of the Chapel. Thank-you artists!

Housing

Working with housing Director Danny Levi, we were successful with applying and receiving funds to hire two youth Housing Interns: Brandi Jadis and Brandon Langley. These two young people are doing housing and housing related work. Brandi has been working with a skilled tradesperson supplied through a provincial energy program. This project enabled individual homes to receive an energy audit and upgrade through the provincial energy program. Morell community has been completed. Scotchfort is almost done and then Brandi and the tradesperson will move to the community of Rocky Point.

Oyster Farming

Sponsored through MCPEI, Ulnooweg, the Band and the leadership from Joe Knockwood the Band has been working in partnership with Atlantic Shellfish training two Band members in all aspects of the oyster business. Much of this work required project workers Gerry McConnel and Neil Levi to travel daily from the community to South Lake! Thanks for all the great and hard work! Also, to Emily Bernard who does the paperwork and payroll for this project!

Status of Women Project

This 24- month project funded through the Status of Women Canada, sponsored by MCPEI, has hired Kindra Bernard as Project coordinator and Misiski Jadis as project worker to develop a tool kit of culturally appropriate resources that will be used to advance the economic well-being of Indigenous women and girls through the participation on public, private and not for profit boards. This project is Island wide and based out of Scotchfort.

Military Project

In early February, Roddy Gould was asked by Chief Brian Francis to work on the Military file and project with Olive Crane- this work included: setting up and hosting meetings, organized a broad community committee to identify potential military projects, position our projects to the Military for decision making, meetings with ACOA and the Province for potential financial contributions, bi- weekly drop in meetings with Military personnel to complete site drawings, survey trail area, ensure site area for the camp, electrical, water, plumbing etc. was ready for the actual camp in November.

From November 03, 2018 until November 18, 2018, Roddy Gould was the point person between the Military and the community, Band office and the project. He worked directly with Olive Crane on this major initiative and had approval from the Chief Brian Francis and then continued the work on behalf of the Band Councilors and the Acting Band Manager. Roddy did a tremendous job on this project. The military who camped and worked out of the community, have completed renovation to the basement of the chapel and have built from scratch a beautiful walking trail. Please note, there is still gravel here by the trails that will be used in the spring for touch ups on the trail. We had 45 service personnel who worked 7 days a week for 10-12-hour days for 15/16 days. The labor (excluded supplies) for this project was over

$172,800 dollars and was provided for free to the community as a gift for allowing the military to train and camp in the community!

Finally thank you to the Health Centre and the group of volunteers who served a hot- lunch to the military while here. Thank-you to the de-brief team who met with the military on November 17 and to Mary Ellen, Alisha Knockwood and Erin Quinn who made homemade treats for the meeting!

Abegweit Mi’kmaw Nation’s 1st Aboriginal Veterans Day Celebration

Nov 08, National Aboriginal Remembrance Day included hosting a recognition ceremony and public event in Scotchfort. The work on this file was completed by Roddy Gould and Olive Crane. Work for this day included the following: research, setting up meetings, conference calls, writing project proposals for funding, meeting with the Province of PEI, securing funding from the Province for the Day, setting up a community committee to plan the actual day from the guest list to the venue, parking, and coordinating with the Military.

This event was made possible by working with Deana Beaton and her tourism and special events team Dion, Sheena Bernard, Will Augustine, Brenda, Gloria, Rita Bernard, Lou Peters, Julie Jadis, CJ Cleal, Bree Knockwood, Linda Fraser, Chelsea Andrews, Danny Levi, Brezyln Knockwood, and Steven Cousins who all helped to all make sure the event was successful. Special thank-you to Christine Crann and the Family Pride group who hosted a public community information session on the military project and then provide the area for the lunch on Nov 08. And special thanks to Betty Gordon and her staff from MCPEI who helped with the event. Thanks to the Lone Cry, Redstone and Red Moon singers, dancers Carmen Jadis, Markus Peter-Paul and to Elder Thirly Levi, who all participated in the Day. A special thank you to Gloria Bernard & special guests including Senator Brian Francis.

On November 8 Roddy Gould was the Master of Ceremonies for the public event and for dealing with the media. The day received lots of positive public news coverage from CBC Compass to the Guardian newspapers. Thank-you to the Peters family who allowed us to use their family’s letter, (Private Dan Peters) and thank you for Gloria Bernard and the 4th Engineer Support Regiment (4 ESR and the Military)

who participated in the trail naming for the late Sapper Erik Bernard and his troop.

Veterans History Project

In the past year Abegweit hosted the military for a major community project in November. In addition, on November 8, 2018 Abegweit hosted National Aboriginal Day for Veterans. As part of the preparation for both activities, the community became very interested in our communities’ roles in Military Services from veterans to people who served as nurses. From our Comprehensive Community plan, a main goal under Culture and Community is to “develop and promote culture through learning experiences and celebration.” A veteran’s history project has been created for two of our youth (Dellis and Wyonna Bernard) to collect and record oral history in the area as well as document and record individual and family’s artifacts, medals, picture etc. Research work will take place over the winter months with a final report completed by March 30, 2019.

Rising Youth Community Grants

• Farm to Fork Project (July-November): The Early Childhood Centre has partnered with Abegweit Mikmaw Nation Wellness Centre and Epekwitk Gardens to bring the Farm to Fork Project to the children and families of Abegweit with the help of funding through the Community Food Security Program (PEI Department of Agriculture and Fisheries). The project has three main objectives: enhance the pride and joy of growing, preparing and eating food; increase fresh local food on the ECC’s seasonal menus; and to provide community-based food learning experiences for parents and children.

Education Abegweit students enjoyed a full summer of youth employment, youth group activities and camp. In September we welcomed our new Aboriginal Resource teacher, Elizabeth Morrison. She comes working on the Cree reserve in Mistissini, Quebec to work with our aboriginal students at Mount Stewart Consolidated. We were excited to welcome her as we have 40 aboriginal students here waiting for her. Our Child Development frontline workers team is busy meeting and helping to direct anyone who has signed a consent form requesting services, to the appropriate people to receive those services. I have met numerous times with our new Case Manager for Jordan’s Principle, Michelle Marshall, and various services have been requested for our students. I am pleased to say that we are making great progress with these approvals. I, along with Michelle and others, attended the Jordan’s Principle Summit in Winnipeg this summer and it was very informative. I have been meeting with Principals and staff at various schools as the needs arise and have invited the Child Well Being Team to come and present to our Child Development team in the new year of 2019. This will give us a clear view of the services they provide in our schools and we look forward to working along with them.

This year has kept us busy with the proposed Federal Government changes to K-12 education for First Nations. The proposed changes for Education transformation in areas of a regional funding formula, whereby our funding would be comparable to what students at provincial schools receive, and a new policy has meant for many Education Transformation Information sessions and Technical Education Discussion meetings from early summer through to the new year. Sherri Russell, Co-Ordinator, Mawiomi Student Centre UPEI has come out to Morell High School and Morell Consolidated to meet with the staff and myself, in hopes of setting up mentoring sessions for our students there with some of their “Learning Buddies” Bachelor of Education students from UPEI. We are in hopes that this will be up and running soon. Mount Stewart Consolidated is busy setting up their Aboriginal section of their library with funds received after winning the Indigo Love of Reading award and are now in the process of purchasing lots of new books with aboriginal content. Christmas concerts will be underway at our Early Years Center next week and all the other schools. I hope that everyone enjoys a wonderful Christmas holiday! Abegweit First Nation Early Childhood Centre Our program is open to First Nation children, infant age to school age, from the hours of 8am-4pm, year-round. * Open during March break, 2019! * As many of you know, due to deteriorating conditions in the old facility, the Early Childhood Centre has been operating out of the Mawiomi Building for a little over a year. While this has not been ideal, the kids attending the Centre have adjusted very well and continue to thrive in the new location. In order to ensure that our children have the best possible space to learn about their culture and prepare for entry into the school system, we are currently building a business case for the creation of a new and permanent home for the early learning activities in our community. This business case is looking at how we offer our children the best possible learning space given our limited financial resources. Fast Facts:

- Community members who take their children to the Centre will continue to only pay fees of $150 per month per child.

- The Mi’kmaq language will continue to be taught at the Centre. - Our culture and community values are top priority, along with the safety, wellbeing and

education of our precious children. - Abegweit Mi'kmaw Nation is committed to making sure we are providing the best service to the

parents and children in our community. Staff Updates: Amanda McGee (Peters) joined our team in the summer first as a Jordan’s Principle Support worker, and then in September, as the Infant classroom educator. Amanda is currently taking her Level 1 at Holland College and we hope that even though her term finishes at Christmas time, she will continue to be a fabulous substitute! Amanda is a hard worker, and the children love all the activities that she has done with them, especially the messy ones!

Trista Lyttle & Laura Boyle are team teaching downstairs and have the toddlers, 3-year old’s and 4-year old’s all together in a family grouping classroom. This is working well; both the educators and children really enjoy it! Val Jadis is still cooking delicious meals at the centre, and Jan Sock is currently our custodian who works in the evenings to ensure the children’s spaces are perfect and smelling beautiful for their return in the mornings. We also want to thank our substitutes who help; we would be lost without you! Jan Sock, Ashley Boyle, Emily Clark and Sam Jadis! Upcoming Events: Our annual Christmas concert will be on Wednesday, December 12th, at 3pm at the Mawiomi. Parents/Guardians/Family members/Community members are all welcome. Light refreshments to follow. Partnerships: We work very closely with Aboriginal Headstart on Reserve contacts, as well as coaches from the Province to insure we are running both programs intertwined, and to the best of our ability for your children. We have a Framework with the Province that we are required to follow, and the AHSOR are working on creating a Framework for all Headstarts to follow, which is very exciting. Big thanks goes to Melody at the Health Centre who helps design our menus and grocery lists so that we can provide a healthy lifestyle for the children. We had another successful school year of having the Music Man, the Morell librarian, as well as Bricks 4 Kidz, visit our Centre. The children love these experiences and look forward to our special guests. The children were also lucky enough to have Georgina Francis come twice a week to teach Mi’kmaq. It is amazing to hear the children speak their language with such pride and excitement. This was our first year being a part of Active Start with Richard Lush, the children love him and all the cool games he shows them! We were also very privileged to partner with Melody at the Health Centre & Epekwitk Gardens & Preserves for a “Farm to Fork” project. The children (and staff!) had a wonderful time learning about planting, maintenance, and harvesting the garden on their land- the eating part wasn’t too bad either. Parents/Grandparents are always welcome to visit the centre, especially to look at their child’s on-going portfolios, but if anyone else from the community would like to visit our Centre and provide children with cultural experiences such as traditional demonstrations (smudging, dancing, drumming, etc.), reading a story to a class in Mi’kmaq, telling a legend from memory, or even to just to stop in and say hello, we welcome you with open arms! You can contact the Centre/or speak to any educator anytime! As always, please let us know if you have any questions, concerns or ideas!

Natural Resources This year we allowed other buyers to bid on our tuna which lead to us getting some of the best prices in PEI. Most of the projects are ending like Stream, Forestry, Fishing Guides and most of the commercial fisheries. We have taken our vessels out of the water, now is the time to reflect on how everything went and where we can make changes to better our production for next season. We hope to offer more training this winter to better our skills. We just finished training some of our members for their SVOP. As always if you are interested in training please check out our Abegweit Facebook page or contact Emily Bernard (902)676-2353. With new regulations coming into force for nest seasons we had to get some new safety equipment, this was implemented so our fishermen could be covered by workers compensation board. The start of next season every fisherman gets a new PFD with a personal EPIRB. Which means that any of our fisherman that fall overboard can be found anywhere in the world. We are presently in negotiations to restart our fisheries guardian program. If we get approved for this, we will be hiring 3 individuals to be our fisheries enforcement team. We presently have 7 members who have taken the training. I would like to thank everyone for their help while I settled into this position during the busiest time of year. I look forward to improving our fishing industry for our community and future members. 20th Annual Mawiomi Abegweit 20th Mawiomi was held on June 9th & 10th and was a huge success. A thank you goes out to our sponsors: Abegweit First Nation - Admin, Fisheries, Health & Gas Bar, Canadian Heritage, Province of PEI, Atlantic Lottery, Grand Thornton, Wyman’s, Colling’s Timber-mart & Morell Coop. Also, a thank you to our local businesses for their donations of merchandise and Wicked EH? for the free Wi-Fi provided during the weekend. We look forward to our 21st Annual Mawiomi next year.
