Welcome back to all Aberavon supporters and also today's visitors, Pontypool. A specialwelcome to James Chapron and the former Wizard, Michael Hook, as well as some very goodmen behind the Pooler scenes, such as secretary Colin Tuckwell and historian Ray Ruddick.

And welcome to thenew season to so manygood Aberavon men, such as Steve Wharmby(announcer), PaulWilliams, Gareth Gange,Dai Owen, John Collins,'Doc', Ken Whyte, JohnCollins, ChrisO'Callaghan and CliffDavid, the formerAberavon and RAF propforward, whose words ofwisdom are great tohave.I would like to welcomethe man who is going topublish an update of my(successful) book 'WelshInternational Matches1881-2000'. However, asyet I cannot find apublisher.I also must tell you of awonderful Welsh rugbybook, maybe the best-ever in content and size -'Tommy Vile' by formerNeath (yes, I am allowedto mention that nameonce) lecturer Phil Grant. If you have not yetbought one thencontact me.What a start by theWizards. Even without theKing (!), Nicky Lloydproved heir to thecoaching throne as he

and the players cameaway with a one-pointwin at Tonmawr. And didyou notice in theTonmawr programmewhich genius said thatAberavon would behappy with a one-pointwin? When I asked ElaineWilliams who the geniuswas, she said 'You'. Truly Ihad forgotten. Then, a day later, theWizards won the GreenStars Sevens beatingAberavon Quins 37-17 inthe final. Steve Davieswas skipper with RickyThomas, RichardThomas, Luke Hathaway,Dan Davies, DavidPritchard, Sam Treharne,Ryan Curtis, Aaron Brayand Rowan Jenkins.Tonmawr and the WelshWizards (an invitationteam sponsored by CliveHopkins) both withdrewfrom the tournament.Ricky Thomas and MarcBennett also gavebrilliant performances inthe Old PenarthiansSevens that Paul Williamsand I watched. It was adelight to watch and adelight to be sat withPaul on a splendid day.It made me think ofplayers I do like

watching. Of course it isthe likes of Richard Morrisand Jamie Davies (goeswithout saying), but theCwmavon boys likeMoore, Gadd andDarryl, also DavidPritchard and RichardThomas are two for me,who could still go a long, long way.Yes, Nicky Lloyd was rightthat it was not Aberavonat their best lastSaturday, but they gave86 minutes worth and didit thanks to the hugeboot of Matthew Jarvis,a former Tonmawr junior,no less. Also, the club must thankSteve Jones, who was incharge as teammanager on Saturdayand coach (?) onSunday. If you think thepitch looks good today, then I have no doubtthat Steve has had a lotto do with that also.Usually, I talk about ouropponents, but this is thefirst home match of theseason. Suffice that Ialways love the Poolerway. Even when NickyLloyd was scrum half! And I am getting formerPooler half backs MarkRing and David Bishop to

come to a Baseballawards night that I amMC of.

Did you know that theyare two of only five menwho were capped forWales at Baseball andRugby?

Finally, another formerPooler player, Walesscrum half Richie Reeshas been talking with merecently and telling mehe loved every secondat Pontypool Park.

This will be a tough 80minutes and we have agood former flankerGwyn Morris in themiddle with anotherCardiffian, fireman DavidBodilly to referee herenext week.

So here we go again as we start our home Principality Premier Leaguecampaign for the season on hopefully a warm sunny afternoon at the TAG, last season we opened up against Pontypool away with a bonus point win but I have a sneaky suspicion they will be a much stronger unit this time around.

I’d like to begin byexpressing my sincerethanks to the many ofyou who made theshort but unfamiliar tripup to Tonmawr lastSaturday. To win as wedid was tough onthem, but we havebeen on the receivingend of more than afew similar defeatsourselves down theyears, so we’ll happily, and with no smallamount of relief, accept the result whenit goes in our favour -it’s very much a case oftaking the points onoffer and moving on.The season’s openingcompetitive fixture isalways a testing time, with new facesinevitably seeking to‘gel’ with their newteam-mates in record

time, and the close-season cobwebsgetting blown away ina manner that noamount of pre-seasonwork can match. Whenunfamiliar opposition isadded to the mix therewill always be anunusual degree ofuncertaintysurrounding suchoccasions, and wemust credit the playersfor battling on until the(literally) last seconds insearch of victory.

I think this will onceagain be a verycompetitive league thisseason with every sidecapable of beatingany other on their day.Winning one’s homegames is vital forleague position and, thanks to the vagariesof the Principality

Premiership fixtureschedules, we nowface three homegames on the bouncewhich I hope willprovide us with anopportunity to laydown some good earlyfoundations for the 26-game programme.

As you will see lookingaround the TalbotAthletic Ground wehave been very busyover the past fewweeks, and investmentin the playing surfaceback in May and Junewill reap longer-termrewards, especially ifwe have another harshwinter like last year. Mysincere thanks go toSteve, Ian and Arron forall their hard work overthe past few weeks toget the old placelooking as it is.

Many thanks onceagain for your support, and of course bestwishes to the wholesquad for the season.

A rugby purist wouldn't admit to deriving much enjoyment fromthis match, but for uncompromising commitment and highdrama it was right up there at the top of the pile.

action

Nerves were in evidence, errors came aplenty, andthe occasion was alwayslikely to be greater thanthe quality of play, butthis long-awaited firstcompetitive meetingbetween twoneighbouring clubsbrought with it delightand disappointment inequal measure, with atantalising twist at theend of an absorbingcontest putting victorywithin the grasp of thevisitors, leaving Tonmawrsadly contemplatingwhat might have beenas their dream PrincipalityPremiership debut turnedinto a nightmare in thevery last seconds.Tonmawr President CliveHopkins, a well-known

character in local rugbycircles, expressed hispride at seeing the clubfinally complete theirclimb to the top branchof the Welsh club rugbytree, and also the hopethat this wasn't to befollowed by the

proverbial fall. And for much of theafternoon, it did look asthough he would get hiswish. An early exchangeof penalties betweenrespective outside halvesLuke Richards and JamieDavies was followed bythree successive Richardsefforts as defencesdominated play, withneither side able makemuch progress in theface of determinedtackling and intensecompetition for everyscrap of possession. With half-time looming, however, the Wizards puttogether a moment ofsheer quality to scorewhat was to be thegame's only try, as right-wing Richard Thomaspopped up in midfield totear a hole in the homedefence before sendingnamesake Ricky, on theopposite wing, flying in atthe corner.Davies converted toclose the gap to just twopoints, and the stagewas set for a tensesecond half, althoughthe interval saw Richardsbeing helped from thefield with what appearedto be a serious leg injury.New Ospreys signing DaiFlanagan emerged fromthe Tonmawr benchafter the break andkicked two earlypenalties to extend the

home lead to eightpoints, but Davies wasthen on target with twoshots of his own to againclose the gap to twopoints before the Wizardsbegan to ring thechanges, using anexperienced bench togood effect. The closingstages saw the visitors, with veteran RichardMorris very much to thefore, driving forward insearch of the score thatwould bring victory, but adetermined rearguardaction by the Tonmawrdefence time and againkept their line intact.Home centre DarrenRichie thought he'dsealed a Tonmawr win ashe sprinted away on theend of a speculative kick, but referee JonathanMason had other ideas, calling the move backfor a knock-forward asRichie and others hadleapt to claim the balland then, with timeticking away, replacement MatthewJarvis was given theopportunity to put theWizards ahead with apenalty, but his long-range effort wasadjudged to havedrifted inches wide of theposts, although manyobservers insist it wentover.Still play continuedthrough five minutes of

injury-time, and just as thehome defenceappeared to have laidthe siege and driven playback upfield, anindiscretion at a rucknear half-way presentedthe visitors with anotherpenalty. Up steppedJarvis, up went the ball, and up went the touch-judges' flags as his kicksailed high between theuprights to put the visitorsahead for, incredibly, thefirst and only time in thematch. The final whistlefollowed immediately, and home supporterslooked on in disbelief astheir dream of “puttingone over” on theirneighbours on theseason's opening day layin ruins.Aberavon coach NickyLloyd, happy with a win,was realistic about hisside's performance, suggesting it was someway short of what isexpected. It was, however, for the thirdsuccessive season, anopening day victory at adifficult away venue.

Welcome back to another season at the Talbot Athletic Ground, Im sure the summers and off seasons are getting shorter and shorter.

cornercaptain’s

First of all I would like tobegin by saying howexcited and honouredI am at being askedand selected asCaptain of AberavonRFC. I never reallythought of being theCaptain of the teamas I knew Ian Moorewas doing a fantasticjob. But as I was askedby Simon King thefeeling grew more andmore on me.

I am a very goalorientated person andrugby player and willstrive to input goalsinto the squad inaiming for success andleading by exampleon and off the field...

...And we couldn’thave got off to abetter start to theseason last weekend inbeating Tonmawr

away and also winningthe Greenstars 7’s. Theboys have had atough start in playing 3games in one weekalready and someputting in a shift onSunday also, sowelcome back.

Being out of the Britishand Irish cup this yeargives our squad theextra time to recoverfrom games, It alsogives us more time toconcentrate on ourleague and cupcampaign.

As we all know theseason is a long seasonif you are involved inthat B&I Cup with thenew playoffs also to beadded. I think we as ateam need toultimately believe wecan be successful inthis league as our

potential is huge. TheTAG is our home andwith every club notwanting to lose anygames in the season,we are going to makethat a hard goal toachieve when teamsvisit us.

I would also like you toknow that Aberavonand Warburton’s areteaming up this year todeliver a healthy livingprogramme into thePort Talbot schools. Thisis an excellent initiativein which we aim toeducate children theimportance of healthyeating and engagingin Physical Activity. Forfurther information orupdates please visitthe Wizards Website.

Welcome back andenjoy today’s game!

One season ago, ouropening league fixturewas the somewhatlonger but potentiallyequally difficult trip toPontypool. The Wizardsagain respondedmagnificently at Wales'most picturesque clubground, emergingvictorious from a high-scoring affair in thelate-summer sunshine. One week ago,Aberavon's openingleague fixture was anundoubtedly difficult tripinto the Premiership'suncharted territory, where Tonmawr lay inwait, eager to make asuccessful start to theirlong-awaited debutseason at this level, andeven more eager to 'putone over' on the Wizards. Pre-match posturingsuggested that thePelenna valley clubwere confident ofvictory, and while thematch ultimately couldhave gone either way,the Wizards againovercame a difficultopening day hurdle tocome away with threepoints. At Aberavonwe've had our share ofdisappointments downthe years, and knowexactly how theTonmawr faithful musthave felt as they

watched MatthewJarvis' magnificent finalkick go soaring betweenthe uprights. I, for one,can appreciate theiranguish, as I'm sure caneach and every one ofyou, but will happilyaccept the victory in theknowledge that therehave been and nodoubt will again beoccasions one which wewill have to acceptwatching our belovedWizards having victorysnatched from theirgrasp right at the death.Meanwhile, I have justone question forwhoever it is up in WRU-land that arranges thePrincipality Premiershipfixtures – when do weget a chance to kick offour season at home? Inthe event, the win atTonmawr, howeverunexpected it may havebeen in some quarters,

gives us a degree ofmomentum going into arun of three consecutivehome matches. However, it would benice not to have to do itthe hard way, one ofthese years.Okay, enough of that. I,for one, am delighted towelcome the good folkfrom Pontypool here thisafternoon. Just over ayear ago they pushedthe Wizards hard in thathigh-scoring openingfixture, yet displayed amagnanimity in defeatthat did them greatcredit, and should beheld up as an exampleto many who are unableto accept disappointmentwith such good grace(no names mentioned, but I certainly didn'tenjoy the torrent ofabuse directed at me byone opposing supporterat the end of a very

recent last-ditchAberavon victory). On their last visit here, back in the spring, theywere able to celebratehaving avoided therelegation trapdoor for asecond successiveseason, despite falling toa heavy defeat thatafternoon. I sincerelyhope that this seasonthey will consolidate andenjoy a morecompetitive campaignwithout flirting with the'drop zone'. The game inWales needs clubs suchas Pontypool, with theirloyal following and theirtraditional welcome –hostile on the field, warmth itself off it – tosucceed. Pontypool is stilla name that generatesanticipation amongsttrue rugby people, andthere's no doubt that, asone of the best-supported clubs around, the rest of us want to seethem flourish once again. It's too much to expect adyed-in-the-woolAberavon supporter towish them well in thisafternoon's encounter, but I am sincere in wishingthem every successwhen the opposition isanyone other than theWizards. Good luck, andwelcome.Paul Williams

Two seasons ago, Aberavon's opening league fixture was the shortbut difficult trip to take on Swansea at St Helens, The Wizardsresponded magnificently with a victory that was considerablymore emphatic than the final narrow margin suggested.
