Welcome to the syllabus for AFYM 2014Throughout the syllabus you will find competitive and also non-competitive classes. Please take care to read the notes on the foot of this page regarding completion of your entry form.

The restoration of the Guildhall building in Swansea is now well underway, and this work will once again impact on AFYM. For AFYM 2014, this means that we have the Committee Room Corridor Rooms available including the Lord Mayor’s Reception Room. These will be impressive performance spaces now that they have been refurbished. At the time of writing our understanding is that the Steinway from the Brangwyn Hall will be available in the Lord Mayor’s Room and also a grand piano in Committee Room 3.

An exciting new venture for 2014 is the re-launch of the Harp Section, see Page 17. We will also be running a BBC NOW Harp Workshop, which is very exciting. Sadly, due to the lack of the use of the Brangwyn Hall we are unable to run the BBC Strings Workshop this year – but it will be back in 2015!

Due to the restricted accommodation available to us, the saxophone section of the Festival will run a week after the main festival on Saturday 15 February, at All Souls Parish Church in Ty Coch. The school’s section will take place on Monday 10th February in the Grand Theatre, Swansea. Once again there will not be an adjudicator’s recital, but we hope to offer a wonderful recital in 2015.

Special Events for 2014:

Saturday 8th FebruaryHarp Workshop, 2.30pmValerie Aldrich-Smith will be taking a workshop, sponsored by the BBC NOW for all harpists. It will be followed by a performance for family and friends. Do join us for this exciting new project.

Sunday 9th FebruaryPaul Harris WorkshopOpen to players of all instruments as soloists or ensemble players. Own choice of one piece by Paul Harris. Play your favourite Paul Harris piece and hear the composer’s comments.

Saturday 15th FebruarySaxophone Workshop, 2.30pmGerard McChrystal returns to AFYM to take his ever popular saxophone workshop, at the end of which there will be a public performance. This event will take place at All Souls Parish Church, Ty Coch. Please note the date.

Entry procedures - please read:

Competitive classes - the repertoire to be performed in each class is to be named on the entry form – see Rule 7. If the performer at the Festival changes his/her piece/s they are disqualified, i.e. they cannot be awarded a medal and will not receive adjudication from the platform.

For Non-Competitive classes this does not apply. There is no requirement to state repertoire on the entry form, it will be announced on the day. Anyone who enters a Competitive class and does not list repertoire on the entry form may be automatically transferred to a suitable Non Competitive class – see Rule 7. Performers must adhere to time limits

AFYM SAFEGUARDING POLICY implemented from January 2004

FULL NAME OF ORGANISATION: Abertawe Festival for Young MusiciansCHAIRMAN: Mrs P C D Davies SECRETARY: Mrs L Morgan TREASURER: Mrs D WorkmanVENUES: The Guildhall, The Grand Theatre, Taliesin Arts Centre, Swansea University, All Souls Church, Tycoch.DATES: Annually – Festival in January/February; Concert in February/March

This policy aims to ensure that parents, guardians, teachers and AFYM work together in partnership to ensure the safety of young people. Throughout this policy the word “children” also means “ vulnerable adults” and the word “parents” includes “guardians and carers.”1 PURPOSE AND FUNCTION OF THE FESTIVAL AND FESTIVAL CONCERT The object of the festival

shall be to advance the education of the public in the Arts, and in particular the Art of Music in all its branches.2 POLICY AVAILABILITY

This policy document will be freely available to all, and will be displayed during the Festival. From 2005, a copy of this policy will be sent to parents/guardians/carers of all competitors coming to the festival and copies will also be supplied to all volunteers who act as stewards at AFYM.

3 TO WHOM DOES THIS POLICY APPLY:This Policy relates to children under the age of 18 years, and to those vulnerable adults who are identified to the Festival prior to their arrival at the Festival. This should be done by contacting a member of the Committee (for information see syllabus, programme, class notification slips). In recognising the needs of children from minority ethnic groups and children who are disabled, the festival actively seeks to meet needs notified to the festival by parents/guardians, carers and/or teachers.

4 FESTIVAL PERSONNELa) The AFYM is run entirely by volunteers who help to ensure the smooth running of the festival by acting as

stewards, but their duties do not include supervision of children. Where parents are not attending the AFYM with their children, this Policy draws their attention to this and requires them to be satisfied that their children will be accompanied to the festival and adequately supervised by responsible adults acting on their behalf.

b) Stewards are recruited by personal recommendation and the AFYM keeps records of all stewards. The Stewards’ Rota of duties is available in the festival office. AFYM personnel can be easily identified by badges. Problems should be addressed to committee members who wear GREEN badges. All problems will be taken seriously, documented and dated. Please ensure your children know that the person to go with in case of a problem wears a GREEN badge.

5 THE GUILDHALL, SWANSEAa) The Guildhall is a public working building with open access to members of the public, office and court staff. b) The festival is open to the public and the AFYM committee has no control over who may choose to attend. c) Parents are reminded that the AFYM is unable to supervise the public areas of the building, such as toilets, foyer

and corridors.d) There are no AFYM practice or changing facilities at the Guildhall.

6 THE TALIESIN ARTS CENTRE, SWANSEA UNIVERSITY a) Performers are invited to take part in the Festival Concert on the recommendation of Festival adjudicators.

Volunteer stewards and committee members are used to ensure the smooth running of the concert.b) AFYM stewards supervise groups of children backstage. c) When children are brought back into the auditorium after their performance they are seated by stewards but are

not supervised. They rejoin parents during the interval or at the close of performances. 7 RECORDING EQUIPMENT

No recording equipment, audio or visual, can be used while the Festival classes are running. Occasionally, when time permits, between classes a steward may organise a group, still photograph. Parents who do not wish their child to be photographed should remove the child before the photograph is taken. Some of these photographs may be used on AFYM notice boards at future festivals. NO VIDEO OR AUDIO RECORDING is permitted at any time during the Festival.

8 THE LEGISLATION AND GUIDANCE THAT SUPPORTS THIS POLICY:The Children Act 1989; The Police Act 1997; The Data Protection Act 1998; The Human Rights Act 1998; The Protection of Children Act 1999; The Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000

9 POLICY REVIEW:The Festival organisers will constantly review their policy, improving and enhancing it as necessary. In doing so they will look to The British & International Federation of Festivals for support, and that body, in turn, will look to other agencies for good practice, most notably the NSPCC and the Arts Council of England policy guidelines.

Please note that this is a copy of the policy sent to parents and teachers
