abhinav jawadekar - walking in the clouds? thunderbolts are opportunities! - interop mumbai 2009
DESCRIPTION
Due to its unique model, clouds are being loved by techies and businessmen alike. However, clouds also present unique challenges such as dependency on Internet connectivity, vendor lock-in, vendor infrastructure as a single point of failure as well as lack of control over the SaaS software release schedule. That said, each of these challenges can be effectively tackled. For instance, Internet connectivity challenges can be addressed by means of caching devices, while "Cloud Virtualizers" can help in addressing vendor lock-in and vendor infrastructure as a single point of failure. The goal of this session is to make the audience aware of the opportunities, while effectively tackling cloud-related challenges.TRANSCRIPT

Significant email service outage from a leader in various cloud technologies despite of several server farms distributed across most of the continents
Sudden changes in the behavior of user interface due to new release of AJAX API being accessed using the SaaS model
A discovery that the cloud service hosting the website is migrating to a new interface that does not support many of the features being used by the website
 And some more….
Issues with cloud model
Huge dependencies on cloud service provider or vendor lock-in
 Limited control over contract
 Ownership of data/ information/ operation
Security of data/ information in flight and at rest
Little or no control over vendor’s schedule
Proprietary technologies specifically developed for particular cloud services
Cloud service or vendor infrastructure as a single point of failure
Changes in the cloud service or even a new release of SaaS might need updates to your technology

Ensuring that you have the data/information with you in a form that can be transferred to alternate setup or restored in case of data loss by cloud provider
Security and ownership of your data
Strategy for porting the technology to a different setup (another cloud service provider or own data center)
