Tour Of Britain Stage 4 of the Tour of Britain cycle race will pass through Brough on 10th September. As with the Olympic torch in 2012, Brough is the first place in Cumbria for the tour to pass through.
With the help of Eden District Council, Brough Parish Council is intending to decorate the village with bikes and bunting. We will also have some street entertainment to create an atmosphere and Bill Hutchinson will have some of his vintage bikes on display. The children from Brough primary school and Nursery will come to watch and cheer the cyclists through.
Times are approximate but the race should pass through Brough around 1.15pm. It will come down High Street, Main Street and turn down Musgrave lane and onto Kirkby Stephen. Please clear these roads as much as possible of vehicles around lunchtime. There will be leading support vehicles and a rolling road closure with Police outriders.
Please help Brough Parish Council to showcase the beautiful Eden Valley as the race will be live on ITV 4, by decorating the village with flags, bunting and painted bikes.
Thank you in advance to everyone who has donated old bikes, painting them, making and putting up bunting and decorating the village. Pat Jones
A CYCLIST’s TRUE TALE
The other day on a ride, I was speeding down a narrow, twisting, mountain road. Along comes a man who was driving very slowly uphill toward me, honking his horn and shouting at me.
"PIG! PIG!!" he yelled. "PIG! PIG!!"
So I flipped him the finger and, as I buzzed by him, shouted back some things I dare not repeat.
Still fuming about this awful man and his shouting, I turned the corner and promptly collided with a pig.

Brough Parish Council The June meeting was held on Thursday 18th July. Five members of the public attended as well as Cllr P Dew (County Council). Appleby Horse Fair – Cllr Jones reported that she, and the Parish Clerk, had attended the public meeting at Appleby on Monday 15 July 2019. There was general agreement that the 2019 Fair had gone well and been effectively managed. The “firm but fair” policing style, together with a greater police visibility was felt to have been successful and it was agreed that this approach should continue in future years. Dog Fouling. The Cumberland & Westmorland Herald had visited Brough Community Primary School to photograph pupils and Councillors, and would hopefully report on the good work done by pupils to raise public awareness of the need to address the problem of dog litter. The pupil's anti fouling posters will be put up around the field next to the school. Co-option of a Councillor – The Clerk had received applications from Mr Alan Brocklehurst and Mr Steven Taylor. Mr Brocklehurst was elected to the position and took up his appointment accordingly. Recycling Centre - A new recycling centre had been identified at the far end of Main Street, beyond Grand Prix Services and on the opposite side of the road. The Clerk had visited the site and held preliminary discussions with the site owner & will now consult with EDC in order to move things forward. A66 Northern Trans-Pennine Project WCHAR – the Council considered its response to the consultation about provision for walkers, cyclists and equestrians. The Council was eager to encourage the development of provision for these groups and felt that such groups would be able to provide more in-formed and specific comment. Councillors asked for consideration to be given to how the development of the A66 might assist in taking forward the cycle-way between Brough and Kirkby Stephen. Neighbourhood Watch Scheme – A Brough NW Scheme has been set up and residents can join up to it by following the link :http:www.ourwatch.org.uk/scheme/39458/brough-parish/ Joining the Scheme provides members with alerts to current matters, potential-ly cheaper insurance, access to discounts on offers to reduce crime and im-prove safety, and insurance for those involved in Emergency Plan activities. Councillors encouraged people to visit the website and consider joining up to the Scheme. The Scheme will be kept under review. Tour of Britain Cycle Race 2019 – The event would pass through Brough on the 10 September and would be broadcast live on ITV4. The Council had amassed 20 bikes - to be painted yellow & bunting will be put up. This is a brief summary of the meeting. For more details or further information contact Mr A Bedford on 017683 71996 or you would be very welcome to at-tend the meetings. The next meeting will be held on Thursday 26th September 2019 in The School Room, The Methodist Church, High Street, Brough, CA17 4BY at 7.00 pm Information is also available at www.brough-cumbria.info website. Calling All Knitters Last year we sent a record quantity of lovely knitted clothes & rugs overseas to places where disasters of various kinds have left people with almost nothing when the cold weather comes. We also sent 31 beautiful knitted teddies to a “Sanctuary” in Athens where Migrants from such places as Syria are cared for, having made a perilous sea crossing with barely any clothes or possessions. They brought great cheer to the children there Let’s do it Again. Knitted goods can be delivered to Heather Simpkins at “Longways”, Brough or Joy Thompson, Low Broomrigg, Langrigg. The knitted items will be blessed at a Coral Service in December

Doctor Collinson’s Educational Foundation at Musgrave Appeal for applications for educational bursary awards
Nearly 200 years ago, Doctor Septimus Collinson, Provost of Queen’s College Oxford, brought up in Great Musgrave, left money in his will to create a trust fund, primarily to assist young people of Musgrave in their education. Remarkably this trust still exists today. Awards or bursaries are made each year on application. Those who can apply must be under 25. They or their parents must reside in the civil parish of Musgrave, i.e. Great and Little Musgrave, Flitholme and Langrigg and outlying homesteads. Applicants must be receiving formal education or training - academic, vocational, professional, trade or skill apprenticeships – in the sixth form, at university or any other educational/training establishment or in the workplace. These annual awards, albeit modest, can be used to help pay for course books, and other media including software, instruments, tools, equipment, overalls, work clothing and other course expenses and materials. So please, young people of Musgrave Parish, if you think you qualify and merit an award for the academic year 2019/2020, either embarking on a new course or in the middle of one, do apply. The Trust will be pleased to receive your applications. In your application, typed or handwritten, and signed, let us know your date of birth, what the course is and for what purpose you would like to be considered for an award from the Trust for the academic year 2019/20, e.g. purchase of course books. Please send your applications to the Trust Secretary, Clive Hutchinson, Mickle Fell Barn, Flitholme, Appleby-in-Westmorland CA16 6PT, to arrive no later than 27 September 2019. The Trustees will then meet to consider the applications and make awards where deemed appropriate.

COMMENT FROM STAINMORE: FAREWELL My wife and I are finally retiring from parish ministry, after 4 years at St Stephen's Stainmore, 5 years in a Norfolk village and 10 years after I retired from stipendiary ministry. St Stephen's is a special church, both in terms of the gem of a building in a lovely setting, and its united, happy congregation. Although small in numbers, they have a big heart and offer a warm welcome to the community for a coffee morning each month in the church, or for other social events (the recent enjoyable variety concert attracted nearly 60 people). We shall continue to pray for God's blessing on them, and that more from Stainmore will come to faith in our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Rev Tony Higton

A History of Stainmore – help needed I am a volunteer with the Victoria County History, working to compile a history of Stainmore. However without the help and contributions of its living residents this cannot be completed. So we need your help with this. In particular your stories about home life, work, food, sport, farming, and schooling. Stories both ordinary and extraordinary, and sayings, dialect, traditions and legends. Also anybody with history collections, documents, oral history, artefacts and scrapbooks are invited to get involved. Whether or not your information is included in the final history all contributions are to be preserved as a memory bank for the local community. Copyright will reside with the original owners. Great North Air Ambulance – Drop-in, July 7th – Report This is a shorter report than usual, but I have let too much time slip by to remember things clearly. In short, the weather was fine, before, during and after the drop-in. In general I felt it was busier than the last few, even though there were significantly fewer printer cartridges, and fewer books than we had been accustomed. Nonetheless the total weight was 652 kilos which is a lot of clothes, bedding etc. That would represent £650 addition to their funds. Remember, we are remote from emergency hospitals, so the Air Ambulance can be a real life saver, and although the NHS ambulance service decide when to call it, it is entirely dependant on all of us to raise the funds needed to keep it flying. Remember they have no income from the NHS or any other taxation source. We cannot foresee how soon we or someone we know might need their services. The next drop-in is likely to be the first Sunday in November, but the Hall has not yet been booked. So my thanks to everyone who brought donations. No matter how large or small the final total, it ALL helps. Dave Williams 017683 42135

Warcop and Sandford W.I. Mrs Maureen Heron (President) welcomed members to the July meeting. A letter of thanks had been received from the Federation for the Bursary in memory of Mrs Julia Holloway. There was a short Business Meeting, everyone had enjoyed the Pennine Group Walk around Soulby and the excellent tea. We were fortunate to have had a lovely warm day for our June trip to the Theatre by the Lake to see Ladykillers and again the meal at the theatre had been very good. A short discussion took place about the plans for our own Centenary celebrations in 2020 and we discussed matters from the W I News. Mrs Heron then introduced our local Artist Lesley Rowe who gave us a fascinating and amusing talk about her life as a nurse and her life long passion for painting and art. Following her retirement from nursing she wanted to improve her painting skills and following a long and rigorous process was chosen as one of ten Artists selected from 12,000 applicants to take part in the BBC prime time programme ‘The Big Painting Challenge’. Lesley says she gets her inspiration from observing people in everyday situations , from sketches, and in developing shapes from photographs of odd or beautiful scenes. Lesley has a small art gallery in Kirkby Stephen. We certainly enjoyed hearing about the ‘behind the scenes activities’ that went into producing the programmes. Mrs Maureen Heron gave the vote of thanks. There was no formal meeting in August but we enjoyed a visit to Fairfield Mill at Sedbergh followed by lunch at the Cross Keys. The date of the next meeting is on Wednesday 4th September 2019 at 7.30pm at Warcop Parish Hall. The Guest Speaker is Kate Hodgson her topic is Reflexology. Everyone is welcome.

Walk of the Month – Great Knipe & Plucka Hill
One of my favourite local walks is this 4 ½ mile ramble on North Stainmore, courtesy of the MOD, which provides stunning views over the Vale of Eden and opportunities for bird-watching. Be prepared for inclement weather. Drive east on the A66 from Brough for approx. 4 miles, turn left at Banks Gate, and park on the verge near to a track immediately on the right. Walk up the track for ¼ mile to a cattle grid, where a notice gives details of the route which follows a series of marker posts
(MP’s). Continue up to the end of the track by a gate. Walk straight ahead to the first MP and follow the wall on the right to the 2nd MP amongst a group of boulders. Continue past two old walls to the third MP. From here MP 4 can be seen on the skyline straight ahead. From MP 4 continue in the same line to MP 5, and from here look up left to spot MP 6, again on the skyline. Climb up to MP 6, and continue to climb diagonally left to the summit cairn on Great Knipe. Leave the summit in a northerly direction to follow the wall, a fence, and another wall for about 1 mile, passing several marker posts on the way. Pass a ruined shelter and an old wall, and then cross a stile in a second wall. Continue by the wall for another ½ mile, and after crossing a ruined wall turn 90 degrees left at a marker post. After 100 yds. at the next MP veer left and descend diagonally to re-cross the wall. Descend grassy slopes to Plucka Tarn, and from here head south-east in the direction of Great Knipe. After passing a MP on a low grassy knoll cross a rick-ety stile over a wall, and then turn right through a gate. Walk diagonally left, cross a stream at a suitable point, and then re-join the track to return to the start. Roamin Robin
