1963 - The Bark Petition

• Petition written on bark • Protesting against the commonwealth’s granting of mining

rights to Nabalcl over 390 square kilometres of land excise from arnhem land reserve.

1966 – Wave Hill Strike

• Aboriginal pastoral workers walked off the job.• Expressed their unhappiness with the poor working conditions

and disrespectful treatment.

1972 – Grove Land Rights

• The Yongu people fight for their land rights• Justice says Australia was legally Terra

Nullis• The couldn’t prevent mining on their land

1975 – Gurindji Hand Back

• The Whitlam government came to power. • They promised to legislate for land rights.• The original Wave Hill lease was surrendered.

1976 – Aboriginal Land Rights Act

• Aboriginal make a effort to inherent right to land recognised
