Mission Statement

The mission of FCCC is to provide children the opportunity to participate in amusical experience which is challenging, rewarding and enjoyable. Throughthe process of practicing and performing choral music with excellence andartistry, FCCC helps to foster the personal, musical and social growth of eachchild, promoting self-esteem and self-discipline. FCCC also contributes tothe quality of the cultural life of its members and the community as a whole.Ultimately, in the words of John Ruskin, “The highest reward for a man’stoil is not what he gets for it, but what he becomes by it.”

FCCC performs the standard children’s choir repertoire, masterpiecesfrom throughout music history, new works and lesser known “little gems.”A unique aspect of FCCC is its performance of authentic vocal jazzimprovisation.

• FCCC is committed to a high level of artistry, musical understandingand self-expression in all our activities.

• FCCC believes not only that all people can sing, but that all peopleneed to sing, and is committed to promoting singing throughoutour culture.

• FCCC brings together children with treble voices in Grades 4-12.

• FCCC is open to children of all religious, racial, cultural and economicbackgrounds in Fairfield County and beyond (No geographical limitsto membership).

Some Thoughts

“ Powerful sources of spiritual enrichment spring from music...If the child is not filled at least once with the life-giving stream of music...

it will hardly be of use to him later on.Often a single experience will open the young soul to music for a lifetime.”

Zoltan Kodaly

“Musical training is a more potent instrument than any other, becauserhythm and melody find their way into the inward places of the soul.”

Plato

Rationale

The rationale expands upon the mission statement of the FCCC. It is astatement of “why we do what we do.”

1. Music The act of making music has intrinsic value in and of itself.Music is an art form which has existed as an integral part of every culturethroughout history. When we sing we experience forms of beauty and joywhich words cannot express. Music making can be a powerful source ofmeaning in our lives, a door to “the inward places of the soul.” Children’schoirs practice and perform great repertoire.

2. Singing Singing is a basic means of human expression. The voice isthe most personal of musical instruments, an important and deep connectionto who we are. Children’s choirs train individual singers and promotesinging throughout our culture.

3. Quality of Life The arts enrich and nourish our lives in an unendingmultitude of ways. Higher degrees of knowledge, understanding andappreciation of music contribute to an enriched quality of life from beforebirth to the very end of life. The arts contribute to the cultural life ofindividuals and the community as a whole. An excellent children’s choir isa valuable asset to any community.

4. Human Development Because of the unique manner in which thebrain processes music, the act of music making has an invaluable impacton major aspects of growth and development. From a parent’s lullaby to anewborn baby to the most exalted masterpieces of the ages, music effectsour cognitive, motor and affective development in myriad ways. For an infant, early musical experiences can establish and reinforce many importantneuronal connections in the brain. Later, as children listen, describe, analyze, evaluate, sing, move, create and utilize a sophisticated symbolsystem, they are developing powerful thinking skills and problem solvingabilities. Participation in a children’s choir positively affects humandevelopment, and builds attributes such as self-esteem, self-discipline,cooperation and self-motivation which are necessary for success in life.

5. Cultural Heritage and Life Long Learning A child who singslearns about life. To participate fully in a diverse global society, we mustunderstand our own historical and cultural heritage, and that of others withinour community, our nation and the world. The skills, knowledge and experiencesinvolved in making great music are nearly infinite in their depth and breadth. The children’s choir is an important chapter in a child’s life long musical journey.

6. Fun In the words of the great musician Bobby McFerrin, “Music isserious fun!”

Fairfield County Children’s Choir

Thank you for your support.

“Our love of music transcends all our differences, and the ability to perform togetherunifies us in a way nothing else can.” These words, spoken by a high schoolmusician, echo the vision that created and continues to be the heart of theFairfield County Children’s Choir.

Fairfield County Children’s Choir provides children the opportunity to makemusic of the highest caliber. Under the leadership and inspiration of FounderJon Noyes, the Choir performs in exciting venues to critical acclaim, and whilethis is no small accomplishment, the mission of the Choir goes beyond itsmusical reputation. FCCC promotes music as a means to creating communityand celebrating different cultures within that community. FCCC accomplishesthis by including children from all economic and social backgrounds and bycollaborating with musicians from all over the country and the world.

FCCC is committed to keeping tuition at a level much lower than the nationalor state average for comparable choirs. It provides financial aid to all acceptedstudents who request it, and has done so since its inception. In addition, FCCCpartners with Bridgeport educators to respond to the needs of urban youththrough its outreach program, Bridges through Music. This program providesscholarships so that all talented young singers may join the Choir and haveuniforms and music. Sixteen choristers currently participate in this program.

For twenty-two years the Fairfield County Children’s Choir has filled concerthalls and hearts with the gift of music. It continues to initiate new programs andcollaborate with other accomplished musicians, composers, and conductors. In order to sustain the programs that have made FCCC a premier choralprogram, it must hold fast to its mission, pursue its outreach program, andprovide financial aid. It can do this only with the continued support of thecommunity that it serves.
