Featuring grass-fed Katahdin hair sheep and sheep’s milk products

Katahdin is pronounced “ka-TAH-din” named after Mt. Katahdin in Maine.

Katahdin sheep are hardy, heavy muscled and medium

sized. They are a unique hair sheep instead of the

more common wooly sheep, with a combination of

desirable traits.

This breed was developed in America to produce

meat efficiently and economically. The meat tends to

be lean and mild in flavor even in older sheep.

The Katahdin are economical. They can breed out of

season, do not require shearing or tail docking, are

well known for being disease and parasite resistant,

and demonstrate good prolificacy. The breed tends

to be naturally tolerant of climactic extremes and

adapts well to various feed and forage systems.

Katahdin sheep demonstrate calm dispositions, lamb

easily, and tend to be great mothers. Lambs have a

high rate of survival and rapid growth performance.

Mature breeding ewes often support at least twins.

Their milk is rich in fat content, creating opportunity

as dairy sheep. Farms can produce exceptional

sheep’s milk products.

White is the most common hair color of Katahdin

sheep, but some exhibit brown or other colors. Spots

may be displayed in unique patterns.

The Katahdin are becoming increasingly more popular.

As a hardy, adaptable, low maintenance breed,

Katahdin sheep are well suited for commercial flocks

and hobby farms.

meat, as show lambs or breeding

prospects.

Show Lambs

Homestead Farm Katahdin show

lambs are prized for their long,

sturdy body conformation, nice

heads, and unique hair coats

that sometimes display non-white color.

In each lamb crop there may be several good ram and

future breeding ewe prospects.

Meat Lambs

Homestead Farm offers a variety of butchering

services. This includes:

On Site Customer Butchering. Kill, clean and

process your lamb according to your preferences.

Full Service Butchering. Your lamb is cut and

wrapped per your preferences, either at a USDA

facility or by a local butcher.

Availability of meat lambs is limited, based on the size

of the lamb crop.

Some of the more

exceptional registered

Katahdin lambs may be

set aside as show lamb

prospects or future

breeding stock.

Homestead Farm has perhaps the largest flock of

milking Katahdin sheep in the Pacific Northwest.

Grass Fed

The closely monitored flock is certified grass-fed.

This more natural feeding strategy results in organic

lean meat with a milder taste, and exceptional

sheep’s milk products.

Breeding Program

Homestead Farm’s breeding program is designed to

improve the Katahdin breed by increasing size, milk

production and encouraging rapid lamb growth. This

program improves conformation and increases the

number of lambs for market sheep, but we also like

to encourage a more refined-looking head well suited

for show lambs. Ewes can support more lambs with

higher milk production, and increased quantity is also

a dairy benefit.

Sheep’s Milk Advantages

Homestead Farm takes advantage of the farm’s dairy

and produces cheese, smudge (sheep’s milk fudge),

and skin care products such as soap, lotions and

creams.

Sheep’s milk is higher in butterfat, calcium and

protein than cow’s or even goat’s milk, yet is lower in

saturated fat. This nutritious milk is an option for

many people who are lactose intolerant. The taste is

richer and creamier, which is also apparent in food

products such as cheese. Sheep’s milk used in skin

care products also offers unique benefits.

The skin care products are based on sheep’s milk

which is naturally beneficial to skin by helping to

remove dead skin cells while holding moisture in, and

assisting with sun damage while also providing some

natural sun protection. Milk protein has also been

identified as containing functional antimicrobial and

anti-inflammatory characteristics.

The end result is skin feeling soft and smooth, with a

firmer and hydrated appearance.

Katahdin ewes are good milk producers, with milk rich

in butterfat. Farm fresh milk from our own dairy is

used at Homestead Farm to create a limited supply

of some prized quality sheep’s milk products.

Sheep’s Milk Cheese

Homestead Farm’s cheese is

made from farm fresh

sheep’s milk and other top

quality products. Some of the

more popular cheese flavors

are blue cheese, gouda, and apple-smoked gouda.

Sheep’s Milk Soap

Soap from Homestead Farm

is made of top quality natural

oils and farm fresh sheep’s

milk. Soap of various gentle

scents are available, as well

as an unscented option. A variety of molds are used

to shape the soap.

creams are made of top quality

natural oils and farm fresh rich,

thick sheep’s milk in a variety of

skin care products include some

ultraviolet protection.
