TRANSCRIPT
Kevin Daly Architects was founded in 1990 as an architectural practice with a focus on craft, construction systems, and material research in work that highlights the interrelationship of research and fabrication, material and form, sustainability and livability.
ABOUTWe maintain a fundamental belief in the practical magic of architecture. At the conjunction of alchemy and technology architecture transforms, surprises and inspires. We are committed to responding to the urgent challenge of building in an environmentally sound manner and see this as the primary mission of contemporary architecture. We work in the public realm, creating communities for education, the arts and dwelling, often by giving a second life to existing buildings through reclamation and reconsideration. Our award-winning portfolio includes environmentally and socially responsive educational, residential, and institutional projects ranging in scale from single room artist workspaces to campus master planning, including the new Ostin Music School at UCLA.
The firm’s work has been widely recognized in the press and noted for the inventiveness and ingenuity we bring to projects that demand economy and discipline. Our work in the transformation of inner-city neighborhoods demonstrates an acute awareness of context and urban design that has been recognized with a National AIA Design Award and by the Rudy Bruner Foundation with a Gold Medal for Urban Excellence. KDA was designated the 2009 “Firm of the Year” by the AIA/Los Angeles.
Current projects in the office include a housing complex for UCSB, the Robertson Recreation Center, a new basketball training facility at UCLA, and custom residences. KDA sustains a diverse scale of work, including custom residences and artist studios, non-profit collaborations, and cultural buildings.

The new Evelyn and Mo Ostin Music Center at UCLA provides a pioneering new home for UCLA’s outstanding Music, Ethnomusicology, and Musicology departments, where music is created, shared, and studied in digitally integrated, professional-quality facilities. Two pavilions, one a state-of-the-art recording studio and the other an ensemble performance rooms, are attached to the existing Herb Alpert School of Music. The ensemble rehearsal space with café at ground level and faculty offices and teaching studios above faces the landmark Inverted Fountain. The second pavilion is a commercial quality recording studio featuring a live room large enough for film scoring with a string orchestra.

The BI(h)OME demonstrates — in its design, fabrication, occupation, and recycling, what sustainability means at a personal level. The BI(h)OME was initiated by UCLA’s CityLAB and designed by Kevin Daly Architects.
