3 Concept and Curriculum

3.1 Tutor System & Curriculum Structure

The Master’s programme in Management, Technology, and Economics consists of three semesters of classes and a final Master’s thesis to be completed within six months. The programme is tutor-driven. The aim of the tutor system is to facilitate a personalised curriculum for the student and to provide individual one-on-one support that ensure a first-rate, specialised education, taking into consideration each student’s talents and expectations. During the first semester, the Master’s student selects as tutor a faculty member working in his or her desired area of studies, chooses supplementary courses and registers these courses via myStudies →. If appropriate, one of the faculty member’s research assistants can support this process. Information about the research fields of the MTEC faculty can be found online →

D-MTEC organises the annual MTEC Master’s Fair → in autumn (Wednesday, 20. November 2019) to facilitate the process of identifying potential tutors and their academic staff. By January 30, each student must submit an online Learning Agreement via myStudies →. As a result, the students develop an integrated study programme, comprising the following elements:

− Core courses

− Elective courses

− Supplementary courses

− Internship

− Master’s thesis

The curriculum is organised in accordance with the ECTS system (European Credit Transfer System), which is widely used across European universities to assess students’ performance. One credit point (CP) is equal to 25 – 30 hours of a student’s workload. To complete the Master’s programme, a student must acquire 120 CP: 84 CP from courses, 6 CP from an industrial placement (internship), and 30 CP from the Master’s thesis.

3.2 Grading System & Performance Assessments

All performance assessments are graded. When using other examination methods, professors can also apply the qualifications of “pass” or “fail”.

ETH Zurich does not use the ECTS Grading Scheme. The grading scale goes from 1.0 to 6.0 in quarter grade (0.25) steps. The passing grade is 4.0, the maximum grade is 6.0. The numerical grades correspond to the following predicates:

ETH Zurich Grades

− 6.0 – 5.75 excellent (ausgezeichnet)

− 5.5 – 5.25 very good (sehr gut)

− 5.0 – 4.75 good (gut)

− 4.5 – 4.25 satisfactory (befriedigend)

− 4.0 pass (genügend)

− 3.5 fail (ungenügend)

− 3.0 poor (schlecht)

− 2.5 very poor (schlecht bis sehr schlecht)

− 2.0 extremely poor (sehr schlecht)

− 1.0 not measurable (nicht messbar)

The above grades are not rigidly related to any distribution function and are not awarded according to predetermined percentages or numerical scores. A student’s grade in a subject is more related to the student’s mastery of the material than to the relative performance of his or her peers.

The professors and lecturers specify the performance criteria, publish them in written form at the beginning of the semester and decide on the allocation of CP. Binding rules regarding performance assessment are provided by the Course Catalogue →.

ETH distinguishes three types of performance assessments →: 1) End-of-Semester Examinations, 2) Session Examinations and 3) Semester performances. Registration is mandataory via myStudies → during the registration period. Detailed information is available online → The timing of performance assessments is outlined below – numbers indicate calendar weeks:

3.3 Academic Standards & Academic Writing Course

In all written works, we trust our students to come up with their own original ideas while at the same time reflecting the work that has already been done by others. By signing a Declaration of Originality students attest that (among other things) they have authored the

Page 8: About the MSc ETH MTEC: Testimonials › content › dam › ethz › special-interest › mtec › ...An international student population, study visits, and industrial placements

7

work in question themselves, read the Citation Etiquette information sheet on plagiarism, and adhered to the rules of citation standard in their disciplines.

A signed Declaration of Originality is a component of every Master’s thesis, semester paper, or other qualifying paper written during the course of studies (including electronic versions). Lecturers may also ask for a declaration of originality to accompany other written papers they have assigned.

If a work was co-authored by a group, the declaration of originality must be signed by all members of the group. Collectively, they vouch for the entire content of the written work.

Each semester, D-MTEC offers the compulsory Academic Writing course – the aim of this course is to improve the academic writing skills needed to complete an MSc thesis successfully. The course provides theoretical input, practical writing exercises, and detailed individual feedback, and is organised into a single group lecture and four workshops in smaller tutorial groups.

The lecture provides an overview of the range of demands on academic essay and Master’s thesis writers and outlines the academic expectations that students must meet. Our goal is to provide a basis for informed decisions when selecting a thesis topic and supervisor. Guidance on planning the writing process effectively, and individual feedback is provided to enhance writing ability.

The course develops a range of practical and transferrable writing skills. Students can use these skills to improve the overall quality of their Master’stheses and produce their thesis more rapidly and efficiently. The writing skills developed here will be useful well beyond the MSc, whether students go on to complete a doctoral programme or produce reports and other documents in industry.

This course is compulsory for all MSc students and its successful completion is a precondition for admission to start the Master’s thesis. We recommend taking the course during the first year of your MSc studies.

3.7 Supplementary Courses

Within the MSc MTEC studies, students deepen the knowledge they acquired in the area(s) of engineering and/or natural sciences during their Bachelor’s studies. After completion of the Master’s programme, their diploma provides interested parties with proof of their competence in these areas. Supplementary courses must comprise at least 12 CP and are chosen in consultation with the tutor. Students document the courses in the Learning Agreement via myStudies → by 30 January. The MTEC Student Office checks and confirms the choice.

3.8 Compulsory Internship / MTEC Internship Platform

The internship is an excellent opportunity to touch base with the job market and gain exposure to specific professional environments. The internship should be carefully chosen and evaluated, and seen as an integral part of the course of study. Ideally, it provides the student with the opportunity to spend some time in a work environment consistent with their chosen specialisation. The minimum period for the internship is 10 weeks.

The compulsory internship can be carried out in Switzerland or abroad, in a corporate setting or a public institution, according to the orientation and career objectives of the student. Additional voluntary internships are possible.

Students largely act on their own initiative when choosing a company for their internship. Prior to the placement, students submit an internship plan including the objectives and partners involved via the MTEC Internship Platform (ETH login required).

Upon submission of a brief internship report, the internship earns 6 CP. If not successfully completed, it can be repeated once. For more information please check the MTEC Guidelines for Internships → and the MTEC Internship Platform →.

3.9 Master’s Thesis

The Master’s thesis is supervised by the tutor and normally deals with a subject chosen from the 6 skill areas. The thesis is often carried out in collaboration with a company and is usually supervised by a D-MTEC professor. In exceptional cases supervision can be provided by faculty from another university. The Master’s thesis is written over the course of six months (full-time). The academic writing course and the internship must have been completed before enrolling for the Master’s thesis.

The process is as follows: Before starting the Master’s thesis, the student identifies an appropriate topic in collaboration with the tutor/mentor. The student must register the Master’s thesis via myStudies (projects/papers/theses), including the topic and a short abstract. The submission of the Master’s thesis must include a signed declaration of originality. The Master’s thesis is graded by the tutor and is valued at 30 CP.

If the Master’s thesis is not approved, it can be repeated once. In this case, a new subject must be chosen.

For additional details please refer to the Master’s thesis information sheet →. We strongly recommend attending the annual MTEC Master’s Fair on 20 November 2019 to get in touch with different MTEC chairs and potential tutors.

4 Special Programmes and Initiatives

4.1 MTEC Executives-in-Residence

Through the Executives-in-Residence Programme D-MTEC appoints senior executives as special faculty members. These appointments strengthen the link between academia and practice by facilitating student instruction on successful leadership and providing students with advice on their future careers. The programme also provides the department with networking and outreach opportunities. Executives-in-Residence are appointed based on their excellent standing in industry, government, large NGOs or international organisations and their personal affinity both to academic research and to teaching and advising students.

The main tasks of Executives-in-Residence are to teach at the Master’s level, to offer counselling opportunities for graduate and doctoral candidates and to support the department in networking and outreach activities.

Currently MTEC has appointed one Executives-in-Residence: Calvin Grieder, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bühler AG and Givaudan AG.

4.2 MTEC Entrepreneurial Leadership Seminar (ELS)

This annual seminar provides the most ambitious MTEC Master’s students with an exceptionally rewarding learning opportunity. Each Autumn Semester, MTEC organises a hands-on, real-time case study of strategy, innovation and leadership in close collaboration with the top management of an outstanding Swiss company (2012: Georg Fischer AG, 2013: Bühler AG, 2014: Swisscom, 2015: PwC; 2016: ABB; 2017: Georg Fischer; 2018 Stadler, 2019: Swisscom). Students work in teams to tackle a specific assignment that flows from the current strategic agenda of the company’s top management. They gain substantial insights into the structure, dynamics and challenges of a major industrial sector by immersing themselves in the business model, culture and strategic landscape of the partner company. Aspects of the programme include site visits, discussing ideas with top executives and interviews with members of the management team as well as internal and external experts and clients, and a final presentation in front of the management board. Interested students should apply for the programme in their third semester.

Contact: Dr Isabel Spicker mtec.ethz.ch/studies/special-programmes/els →

4.3 MTEC Career Talks

Each Spring Semester D-MTEC hosts a series of career talks during lunchtime, focusing on information about specific industries, skills and occupations. Each talk is followed by snacks and drinks, offering the opportunity for deeper, informal exchange. The MTEC Careers Talks are information sessions rather than recruitment fairs – they provide insights into different types of careers in specific industry sectors. The talks are open exclusively to D-MTEC students (MSc, MAS, doctoral candidates) and students must register in advance. Guest companies in previous talks have included e.g. Migros Genossenschaftsbund, SwissRe, Google, Georg Fischer and a number of start-ups.

And finally… What’s OBIS?

Niklas Friederici, OBIS President 2019

OBIS – The Organization of Business and Industrial Engineering Students – is the official student organisation of D-MTEC MSc students at ETH. Our goal is to enrich your experience as a D-MTEC student by helping you develop your social life alongside your academic and professional career. OBIS provides a framework that supports you in your efforts to accomplish your personal goals and fosters our collective growth within the D-MTEC community.

Students’ interests are represented by OBIS through our active participation in academic decision-making. We elect delegates and send them to the teaching commission and department conferences. Moreover, we support actions undertaken by VSETH (the organisation representing all ETH students) on matters of academic politics and keep students informed about recent issues discussed in VSETH and other delegate meetings.

OBIS also aims to promote a common identity for D-MTEC students by encouraging contact between fellow students. In that spirit, we organise social events throughout the semester such as ski trips, BBQs and start/end-of-semester events.

Furthermore, we regularly organise business apéros, company visits and workshops with corporate partners in Zurich to ensure contact with local and global firms interested in students in our field, and to give you the opportunity to expand your professional network.

At the beginning of every semester we recruit new students to join the board and contribute to the D-MTEC community. Keep an eye out for the official application in our weekly newsletter!
