About the Tudors
Henry VIII was king of England between 1509 and 1547. His family name was Tudor . Five Tudor kings and queens ruled England for 118 years from 1485 to 1603:Henry VII 1485 -1509Henry VIII 1509- 1547 Edward VI 1547-1553Mary I 1553-1558Elizabeth I 1558-1603
Wars of the Roses
Between 1455 and 1485,two families , called the House of York and the house of Lancaster, fought for the throne of England. In 1485, Henry Tudor, defeated king Richard III and became king Henry VII. He married Elizabeth of York and combined the two roses to make a new emblem – the Tudor rose.
Henry VIII became king when he was only 17 after the death of his father, Henry VII. Here are all of Henry’s wives:

Hedge mazes were popular in Tudor gardens .You had to find your way along the paths to the centre-then out again! Hampton court was one of Henry’s favourite palaces.
•One of the most distinctive things about a Tudor house was the black and white effect , because of their exposed wooden frame.• Many Tudor houses featured a wooden frame , a tall chimney , a steep roof and an enclosed fire place.• Most Tudor houses had a thatched roof , although rich people could afford to use tiles.
Why is Henry VIII important today?Henry VIII is famous today for his six wives
and for his larger-than-life personality. He also made important changes in the English society. Some of Henry’s changes had a permanent effect on life in England.
Henry VIII became head of the English church. Today, the Church of England remains independent and still has the English monarch as its head.
Queen Elizabeth II is head of the Church of England-a title that dates back to Henry VIII’s reign.
