LAST FALL, THE COUNCIL OF BARRINGTON GARDEN CLUBS AWARDED several businesses, in

Barrington and in its neighboring villages, for their excellence in plantings around and near their

entrances. Last year, nine businesses were chosen in various categories. The project's purpose

is to keep the Barringtons beautiful for those who shop or do business in our areas. When you

approach a business, notice their beautiful gardens and how this may bring you back there. Also,

the drive through and around Barrington will be such a pleasure. The project usually starts in July

of each year when photos are taken and winners are then chosen in August. If your company

THE SOUTH BARRINGTON GARDEN CLUB will be open for new members. The cost for the new members are: $25/South Barrington resident; $35/Non-resident. Meetings are held year-round at the South Barrington Tennis Club on the first Thursday morning of the month and consist of speakers, hands-on projects, and summer bus trips to points of interest in the area.

PB KITCHEN DESIGN (PBKD), an award-winning, family-owned kitchen design firm, will host the Fox Valley Kitchen Walk on Saturday, May 19, benefitting the local nonprofit organization Fox Valley Food for Health. The self-guided tour will take guests through PBKD-designed kitchens in Geneva, St. Charles, and Batavia, culminating with a reception at the PBKD showroom in downtown Geneva.

This year, the Kitchen Walk will feature five unique kitchens, not seen on past walks, with styles ranging from industrial rustic, with massive beams and hand-crafted iron, steel and copper, to timeless traditional spaces and historic kitchens updated for modern living. All five kitchens were designed by the PB Kitchen Design team and capture the unique flair of each homeowner. Tours begin at 11 a.m. and run through 4 p.m. The two-hour showroom reception, held at 200 S. 3rd Street in Geneva, starts at 4 p.m. and includes appetizers, beverages, and a silent auction.

Proceeds from the Fox Valley Kitchen Walk will benefit Fox Valley Food for Health, a local non-profit organization that teaches teens how to prepare healthy, predominately organic and nutrient-filled meals for seriously ill or cancer patients, which are delivered right to their door. Founded in 2012 by Mary Fremgen and Susan Leigh, more than 200 adults and 150 teens have volunteered approximately 45,000 hours since the program’s inception and served over 34,000 meals free-of-charge.

“These funds raised by the Kitchen Walk will significantly help to increase our impact within Kane County and the Fox Valley community,” says Leigh, Executive Director at Food for Health. “We currently prepare and deliver meals to between 65 and 75 individuals each week and hope to reach our goal of serving up to 85 individuals weekly by mid-year.”

THE BARRINGTON CHAPTER LYRIC OPERA OF CHICAGO was chartered on April 15, 1968 and will hold a celebration of its 50th anniversary on Sunday, April 15, 2018. The golden anniversary celebration will take place at Medinah Country Club and will include a luncheon and an opera program featuring rising stars of the international opera world.

The program will feature performances by three international rising stars: Takaoki Onishi, a Japanese-born baritone and third-year member of Lyric Opera's Ryan Opera Center’s professional artist-development program; Ola Rafalo, a Polish-American award-winning mezzo soprano; and Irina Feoktistova, a classically-trained pianist from St. Petersburg.

Since its inception 50 years ago, the Chapter has sought to generate financial, volunteer, and audience support for Lyric Opera of Chicago. It provides lectures, education, and opera-related programs to adults in Barrington and the Northwest Suburbs through the five programs cultivated each year.

In addition, the Chapter seeks to cultivate the opera audience of the future. Each year they bring Opera in the Neighborhoods to over 1,200 4th- through 6th-grade students in the Northwest Suburbs by providing an opportunity for them to see an hour-long youth-focused opera at the Barrington High School auditorium. Teachers are provided with resource materials relating to both opera and the opera they will see and workbooks for each of their students, so they can prepare for the experience ahead of time. For most students this is their first opportunity to see an opera, and for many, it is their first exposure to live performance of any kind.

Barrington Area Chamber Accepting Applications for 2018 Scholarship Awards

Application forms are now available for the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC) Lauren Brown Memorial Scholarship. The BACC awards Lauren Brown Memorial Scholarships each spring to local high school students pursuing higher education through a university, community college, or vocational/trade certification program. Eligible students must be from the Barrington area, or the student of an employee of a Chamber member business. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,500. To be eligible, students must complete an application and submit it with all supporting documents no later than Friday, May 1, 2018. All supporting documents should be single-sided.
