Roots is an app students use to instant message counselors anonymously when they need help. Then, non-anonymous counselors can provide help by continuing the conversation over the app. The app provides a way

for students to seek help from people within their communities without identifying themselves.

Students can choose a counselor who they want to talk to.

They can chat counselors for the help they need.

Counselors receive chat conversations, with student names being random pseudonyms.

Technology

In the case of a serious suicidal attempt or any problem where a counselor is legally responsible to identify the student, the counselor has a report button that can send the student’s Team Roots registration number (which is his or her phone number) to any account configured to have administrative access. The administrative accounts have a web interface. Emails will also be sent to inform admins of the problem. Admins can be head counselors, directors, or emergency response groups like DPS.

Give students a way to search for help anonymously to remove the fear of stigma or negative repercussion that students face when confronting mental health challenges.

Connect students with people within their community, by creating accounts for each community. Therefore, counselors are more apt to empathize with students seeking help.

Let students choose who they want to get counseling from. This allows a student to get counseling from someone they might know and feel comfortable being a little bit more open with.

Enable students to seek help at any time for free. It often takes a lot of effort for a student to set up an appointment with a counselor. Furthermore, a student may need help at an odd time, when counselors cannot be available physically.

Take advantage of the digital age, creating a virtual platform for counseling, while still focusing on the human component. We strongly believe that a person who can empathize is the best counselor.
