Lincolns Tomb

Abraham Lincoln was assonated in The Fords Theater on April 14, 1865. Lincolns Tomb is Abraham Lincolns final resting place along with his wife Mary Todd Lincoln and three of their four sons. Lincolns Tomb is located in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield IL.Oak Ridge is the largest cemetery in Illinois and the 2nd most-visited cemetery in the U.S.

Lincolns Tomb is marked by a 117-foot tall granite obelisk surmounted with several bronze statues of Lincoln inside and outside of the tomb. The tomb was constructed by Larkin G. Mead during the year 1874.

The Monument

Lincolns Bust

The bust is located near the front entrance of Lincolns Tomb. The original marble bust is located in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Legend says if you rub the nose of Lincoln you will receive good luck. This is why the nose on the statue is so polished.Legend of Lincolns Bust

North of the present day tomb at the base of the hill you can still see the old receiving vault. Where Lincoln and his son Willies remains were laid to rest in 1865.The Old Receiving Vault

The temporary receiving vault is where Lincoln was placed in 1871 until the completion of the tomb. Legend says that if you place a penny on the maker you will receive good luck.

When entering Lincolns Tomb you will notice a bronze statue of Lincoln in the center. This statue is a replica of the famous marble sculpture in the Lincoln Memorial at Washington, D.C.Entering the Tomb

The hallway to the Tomb is lined with four bronze statues that represent Lincolns life before his Presidency.

The Final Resting Place Of Abraham Lincoln

Lincolns Tomb is also the final resting place for Mary, William, Edward, and Thomas Lincoln. Their other son Robert T. Lincoln is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.The Final Resting Place of Lincolns Family

The four bronze statues that are located on along the hall on your way out of the tomb represent Lincolns life after his presidency.

Wreath Laying Ceremony June 5th through August 28th Tuesday nights at 7 pm. This includes Flag-Lowering Ceremony by the 114th Infantry Regiment Illinois Volunteers Reactivated.
