LET’S BEGIN HERE

Though born in a culture that had all but forgotten the God of the flood and the ark, the man first known as Abram came to know the one, true God so intimately that he was called God’s “friend” ( James 2:23). As we follow Abraham on his journey through a life of faith and obedience, we need to put ourselves in his place. And to truly learn from Abraham’s life, we must think what he thought, hear what he heard, feel what he felt, go where he went, and most of all, learn what he learned. Among the many benefits of studying the life of a man of God is the opportunity to discover truths about the God of that man. Throughout this series on the life of Abraham, we will learn how greatly God honors a life lived in faith — not only in ancient days but also today.

LET’S DIG DEEPER

1. Theological Reminders: Three Things That Are True of GodBecause the Lord is “the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8), many of the truths Abraham discovered and experienced about God continue today. Three of these truths are foundational for God’s grace relationship with us:

• God’sloveforusisinfinite.

• God’sguidanceoverusisunpredictable.

• God’sblessingsonusareastonishing.

2. Biographical Survey: An Overview of Abraham’s Life (Genesis 11:27 – 32; Acts 7:2 – 4)

While Abram was surrounded by a culture of immorality, God slipped His hand into the dark hole and rescued Abram from his spiritual ignorance. Abram didn’t seek God. God sought Abram and revealed Himself so He could bless Abram astonishingly.

DooRway To HISToRy Ur of the Chaldeans

Mesopotamia means “between the rivers.” In Abram’s day, that “fertile crescent” in the midst of the Tigris and Euphrates boasted some of the largest, wealthiest cities in the ancient world: Babylon, Nineveh, Mari, Ur, and not far to the east, Susa.

In the days of Abraham, Ur of the Chaldeans experienced an era of peace and prosperity — the kind of wealth and comfort that drew immigrants from all over to experience a life of ease and opportunity.

Abram and his family were not fleeing economic hardship, political unrest, or natural disaster when they up and left Ur. They had every worldly reason to stay. Instead, they left religious darkness and spiritual confusion to follow the light of the one, true God.

LET’S LIvE IT

As we reflect on the life of Abraham in panorama, three major lessons rise from the chronicle of his journey with God.

• ByfaithweacceptGod’sinfinitelove.

• Knowingweareloved,byfaithwefollowGod’sunpredictableguidance.

• Knowingwe’relovedandled,weanticipateGod’sastonishingblessings.

Have you been resisting an unpredictable path God wants you to take? Have you brushed off opportunities at church, in the community, or even in the mission field? Write down a few things you could be doing that you’re not, even if they feel outlandish or far-fetched.
