ABRASIVE SOLUTIONS
INTRODUCTION1
A HISTORY OF EXCELLENCE
In the mid 19th Century, a group of ceramists and entrepreneurs in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, set out with a goal: meet the growing need of the burgeoning U.S. manufacturing industry, which needed an ever increasing supply of grinding wheels to build and maintain machinery.
By 1876 Norton were manufacturing grinding wheels, and had acquired a patent for vitrified wheels. In 1885 the Norton Emery Wheel Co. was founded to manufacture the first grinding wheel that could be precision made and mass-produced.
Through the latter part of the 19th Century Norton expanded its abrasives range and reached customers throughout the U.S. and Canada. In 1909, Norton built its first European plant in Germany. This was followed by plants in France (1920), UK (1930), and Italy (1935). In the 1930’s Norton strengthened its position by expanding into Coated Abrasives. In the same decade Norton developed Diamond and CBN based Super Abrasives.
By 1950 Norton had established itself as the leading world-wide abrasives brand. In 1956, Norton entered South America through an acquisition in Brazil, and followed this with plants in India (1968) and Japan (1972). This steady growth, based upon innovation, technology and responsiveness to customers, has continued and Norton now has a presence in 28 countries around the world.
In 1990, Norton was acquired by Saint-Gobain, a world leader in the manufacture of engineered materials. Saint-Gobain, founded in France in 1665, shares Norton’s tradition of commitment to its business and customers, of understanding and responding to the needs of the marketplace and of technical innovation. Saint-Gobain’s experience has been a strong addition to the Norton brand.
For over 125 years, Norton has provided innovative solutions for the challenges faced by industries. Our dedication to our business and customers ensures we will continue to be the world’s number one abrasive manufacturer supplying a complete range of products that continually add value and efficiency to your operation.
FOR OVER 125 YEARS, NORTON HAS PROVIDED INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR THE CHALLENGES FACED BY INDUSTRIES. GENERAL INFORMATION
ABRASIVE GRAINSTwo main types of grain exist:
• Industrial abrasives: such as aluminium oxide, zirconium oxide, silicon carbide or ceramic abrasives SG® and SG-X ceramic based abrasives.
Aluminum oxide is generally used for the sanding of all sorts of timber (solid, laminate, ply,...) or with an anti-loading treatment, for sanding varnishes. Silicon carbide is recommended for sanding varnish and lacquers. Zirconium oxide and ceramic based abrasives are used for sizing: high pressure and high stock removal.
• Natural abrasives: such as flint, garnet and emery.
COATINGSThe coatings used to fix the abrasive grains on the backing are applied in two layers, generally referred to as make coat and size coat. Norton uses different types of coatings:
• Natural glues (animal or vegetable glues),
• Synthetic resins.
Antistatic and No-fil® (zinc stearate) treatments reduce loading during sanding or varnish sanding.
BACKINGSNorton offers a wide range of coated abrasive backings: paper, cotton or polyester cloth and non-woven cloths. They provide flexibility and tear resistance, especially when used on machines.
Paper:
Cloth: • Superflexible “J” cotton cloths are recommended for
sanding profiles. Very strong “X”cotton cloths and polyester cloths are used for heavy sanding operations and sizing. Polyester cloths are water resistant.
• Non-Woven Cloth: Is tear and heat-resistant, used for hand sanding.
COATED ABRASIVES• Norton coated abrasives are manufactured in a wide variety of shapes and sizes in order to meet the needs of
professionals and individual users. They are used for sizing, sanding, stripping, polishing and finishing operations.
Coated abrasives are made up of three components:
To improve both the quality of varnish sanding and ease of use, Norton recommends its Soft-Touch backing. See page 44.
- The backing- The coatings- The abrasive grains
Each exist in a variety of qualities. The best product design results of the optimal combination of these three components.

8COATED ABRASIVES
HOW ABRASIVE GRAINS ARE DISTRIBUTEDThere are two types of distribution:
• The so-called “OPK” openkote distribution, which corresponds to a coverage rate of 30% to 60% of the backing. This type of distribution therefore leaves large spaces between each abrasive grain. It is recommended for all applications subject to premature loading of the abrasive product, which would inevitably affect both stock removal and product life. Furthermore, it enables faster stock removal.
• The so-called “CLK” closekote distribution, which corresponds to a coverage rate of 100% of the backing. This distribution mode is reserved for products that require a maximum number of cutting edges per unit of surface area, thus ensuring a better quality finish. It is recommended for operations where loading is less of an issue and whenever a high quality surface finish is required.
STORAGE CONDITIONSTo guarantee the performances of coated abrasives, certain storage conditions must be met: the premises must be closed, clean, and not subject to high variations in temperature or relative humidity. Ideal storage conditions are:
Temperature: 15°C to 22°C RH: 40% to 50%
If the workshop atmosphere is very different to that of the storage area, hang the belts near the machine on which they will be used for 1 to 2 days. For best performances, we recommend use within 12 to 18 months following manufacture. Storage in an area that is too dry or too humid may cause them to curl.

SHARPENING APPLICATIONS25
PRODUCT SELECTIONCompared to Aluminium Oxide and Silicon Carbide, Superabrasives, such as Diamond and CBN, offer excellent cutting performances and a better quality of sharpening. By reducing sharpening frequency, they increase the HSS or carbide tools life.
Diamond and CBN wheels are made of two parts:• the core which constitutes the body of the wheel• the abrasive layer

SUPERABRASIVES DRESSING STICK
GOOD
Aluminium oxide dressing sticks are used to reach the maximum cutting power of the wheel. To dress Diamond-CBN wheels of grit 126, use a grit 150 stick, for grits 107 to 76, use a grit 220 stick, and for grits 64 and finer, use a grit 320 stick.

These products are manufactured from a mixture of aluminium oxide grains and a vitrified bond.
BORE BUSHESFor machines with non-standard spindles, plastic reduction bushes are used to adapt the wheel bore to that of the spindle. Never use a metal bush (aluminium or bronze) for vitrified wheels.
No point of the flanges should come into contact with the reduction bush or bushes after the wheel mounting (FEPA Safety Code – Chapter 5.13). As a result, the thickness of the reduction bush or bushes must be less than the thickness of the wheel.
When using 2 bushes, they must be assembled in staggered raws. It is possible to assemble a bush on each side for wheel thicknesses above 25 mm.
SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS:Comply with the maximum operating speed (MOS) indicated on the wheel blotter. Always use the protection guard. Protect eyes and hands. When using reduction bushes, refer to the diagram below. Do not grind with the side of straight wheels.
