    The Mission Celebration

Do celebrations reflect physical or cultural geography?Carnival or Mardi Gras

Followers of the Roman Catholic religion in Italy started the tradition of

holding a wild costume festival right before the first day of Lent. Because

Catholics are not supposed to eat meat during Lent, they called their

festival, carnevale which meansto put away the meat.As time passed,

carnivals in Italy became quite famous; and in fact the practice spread to

France, Spain, and all the Catholic countries in Europe. Then as the French,

Spanish, and Portuguese began to take control of the Americas and other

parts of the world, they brought with them their tradition of celebrating

    carnival.

    Plantation Agriculture Requiring Cheap Labor

Sugar -- Around the eighth century A.D., Arab traders introduced sugar from

South Asia to the Mediterranean, Mesopotamia, Egypt, North Africa, and Spain. It was

among the early crops brought to the Americas by the Spanish from their fields in the

Canary Islands, and the Portuguese from their fields in the Madeira Island.

Coffee -- From Ethiopia, coffee was said to have spread to Egypt and Yemen. The

earliest credible evidence of either coffee drinking or knowledge of the coffee tree appears

in the middle of the fifteenth century, in the Sufi monasteries ofYemen. By the 16th

century, it had reached the rest of the Middle East, Persia, Turkey, and northern Africa.

Coffee then spread to Balkans, Italy, and to the rest of Europe, to Indonesia, and to the

    Americas.

BananaSoutheast Asian farmers first domesticated bananas.

    Pirates and Rum --

Caribbean captains took advantage of a cheaper and more readily available source of

liquid sold by local sugar cane plantations called "kil devil" a foul tasting by-product of

sugar cane processing which later became known as rum. In fiction, Robert Louis

Stevenson gave rum to history thanks to Captain Billy Bones in the book, Treasure

Island, the alcoholic beverage most associated with pirates is rum.
